Supernatural Media Kit 2015 SUPERNATURAL MEDIA KIT 2015 A blend of X-Files and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, the weekly, hour-long series Supernatural starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, features two brothers on a mission to carry on the “family business.” Airing on the CW (formerly the WB) since 2005, the Winchesters continue to travel the country, on the hunt to track and vanquish all evil paranormal forces in the world. Ten seasons strong with an eleventh season on the way, the Winchesters have been to heaven, hell and everywhere in between. Finding familiarity in their 1967 Chevy Impala and seedy hotel rooms across the country, the Winchester boys delight and frighten fans every week while investigating paranormal mythology, folklore, urban legends and what goes bump in the night. Source: AllMovie, 2015 Dean Winchester is the eldest Winchester brother. Born on January 24, 1979 to John and Mary Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas, he is four years older than his younger brother, Sam. Dean is a skilled and highly resourceful hunter. He is well-versed with multiple types of firearms; he prefers his Colt 1911 and sawed-off shot- gun. He is also adept with brawling and knife fighting, and has subdued several human assailants with ease and bested physically more powerful creatures such as shape- shifters, vampires and demons. He frequently utilizes improvised weapons and explosive devices. A fan of pie and Busty Asian Beauties as well as fiercly protective of his little brother, Dean brings humor, style and loyalty into the supernatural series. Jensen Ackles, a Dallas native, started acting at age 19 on the daytime soap Days of Our Lives where he received three Daytime Emmy nominations for his role. After four years he was a made the leap to evening television on James Cameron’s sci-fi show Dark Angel as well as recurring roles on Dawson’s Creek and Smallville. In 2005, Ackles landed his own show, Supernatural, costarring fellow Texan Jared Padalecki, with whom he shares a strong on-screen chemistry and an off-screen friendship. Away from Supernatural, Ackles enjoys sports and cheers for the Dallas Cowboys. He is married to fellow actress Danneel Harris. Sources: imdb.com, 2015 TVGuide, 2015 Sam Winchester was born on May 2, 1983 to John and Mary Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas. The younger brother of Dean Winchester, he attended Stanford University before resuming the lifestyle of a hunter. Well trained, Sam is a skilled fighter, proficient with firearms, shotguns and melee weapons. Throughout the series, Sam has been shown to be highly intelligent with reading and recalling Latin incantations, which can be used to summon, exorcise and vanquish demons. While Dean is the superior physical fighter, Sam’s expertise lies in carrying out research and recalling information to determine the nature of the threat that they are facing. Jared Padalecki, an Austin, Texas native came into the spotlight after winning a nationwide contest to be a presenter at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards. The next year, he landed a role on the Gilmore Girls as Rory’s beau, Dean Forrester, and garnered a strong female fan base. In 2005, Padalecki landed a starring role on the sci-fi series Supernatural. Feature film roles followed with parts in such horror flicks as House of Wax, Cry Wolf and the Friday the 13th remake. Like Ackles, Padalecki roots for the Dallas Cowboys. He is married to Supernatural costar Geneieve Cortese. Sources: imdb.com, 2015 TVGuide, 2015 Who created Supernatural? + A joint effort of filmmakers McG, Eric Kripke, and Robert Singer created the show in 2005. + Kripke pitched the original show to the WB about two brothers who investigate the supernatural. + Originally, Kripke envisioned the show following a reporter who crossed the country in search of urban legends. Where does Supernatural air? + When Supernatural aired in 2005, it was shown on the WB. Now it airs Wednesday nights at 9/8 p.m. EDT on the CW. Seasons 1-9 can also be viewed on Netflix. How many seasons of Supernatural are there? + Supernatural is in its tenth season and was renewed for the eleventh in January 2015. Where Supernatural filmed? + Supernatural is filmed in Vancouver, B.C. Where did Sam and Dean’s names come from? + Dean’s name is a homage to Jack Kerouac’s road-trip novel “On the Road”, tying into Kripke’s concept for an Americana road-trip television series. It was originally intended for the brothers’ last name to be “Harrison” as a nod to actor Harrison Ford, as Kripke wanted Dean to have the “devil-may-care swagger of Han Solo.” However, there was a Sam Harrison living in Kansas, so the name had to be changed for legal reasons. Combining his interest in the Winchester Mystery House and his desire to give the series the feel of “a modern-day Western”, Kripke settled on the surname of “Winchester.” Where are Sam and Dean from? + Dean and Sam are from Lawrence, Kansas. Kripke selected this location due to its closeness to Stull Cemetery, a place famous for its urban legends. Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake Taylor Boulware A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Thomas Foster, Chair Anis Bawarshi Katherine Cummings Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake by Taylor Boulware The University of Washington, 2017 Under the Supervision of Professor Dr. Thomas Foster ABSTRACT This dissertation examines contemporary television slash fandom, in which fans write and circulate creative texts that dramatize non-canonical queer relationships between canonically heterosexual male characters. These texts contribute to the creation of global networks of affective and social relations, critique the specific corporate media texts from which they emerge, and undermine homophobic ideologies that prevent authentic queer representation in mainstream media. Intervening in dominant scholarly and popular arguments about slash fans, I maintain a rigorous distinction between the act of reading homoerotic subtexts in TV shows and writing fiction that makes that homoeroticism explicit, in every sense of the word. This emphasis on writing and the circulation of responsive, recursive texts can best be understood, I argue, through the framework of Rhetorical Genre Studies, which theorizes genres and the ways in which they are deployed, modified, and circulated as ideological and social action. I nuance the RGS concept of uptake, which names the generic dimensions of utterance and response, and define my concept of queer uptake, in which writers respond to a text in ways that refuse its generic boundaries and status, motivated by an ideological resistance to both genre and sexual normativity.

  • ABSTRACT the Women of Supernatural: More Than
ABSTRACT The Women of Supernatural: More than Stereotypes Miranda B. Leddy, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This critical discourse analysis of the American horror television show, Supernatural, uses a gender perspective to assess the stereotypes and female characters in the popular series. As part of this study 34 episodes of Supernatural and 19 female characters were analyzed. Findings indicate that while the target audience for Supernatural is women, the show tends to portray them in traditional, feminine, and horror genre stereotypes. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) to provide a description of the types of female characters prevalent in the early seasons of Supernatural including mother-figures, victims, and monsters, and 2) to describe the changes that take place in the later seasons when the female characters no longer fit into feminine or horror stereotypes. Findings indicate that female characters of Supernatural have evolved throughout the seasons of the show and are more than just background characters in need of rescue. These findings are important because they illustrate that representations of women in television are not always based on stereotypes, and that the horror genre is evolving and beginning to depict strong female characters that are brave, intellectual leaders instead of victims being rescued by men. The female audience will be exposed to a more accurate portrayal of women to which they can relate and be inspired. Copyright © 2014 by Miranda B. Leddy All rights reserved TABLE OF CONTENTS Tables

  • Theology of Supernatural
religions Article Theology of Supernatural Pavel Nosachev School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies, HSE University, 101000 Moscow, Russia; [email protected] Received: 15 October 2020; Accepted: 1 December 2020; Published: 4 December 2020 Abstract: The main research issues of the article are the determination of the genesis of theology created in Supernatural and the understanding of ways in which this show transforms a traditional Christian theological narrative. The methodological framework of the article, on the one hand, is the theory of the occulture (C. Partridge), and on the other, the narrative theory proposed in U. Eco’s semiotic model. C. Partridge successfully described modern religious popular culture as a coexistence of abstract Eastern good (the idea of the transcendent Absolute, self-spirituality) and Western personified evil. The ideal confirmation of this thesis is Supernatural, since it was the bricolage game with images of Christian evil that became the cornerstone of its popularity. In the 15 seasons of its existence, Supernatural, conceived as a story of two evil-hunting brothers wrapped in a collection of urban legends, has turned into a global panorama of world demonology while touching on the nature of evil, the world order, theodicy, the image of God, etc. In fact, this show creates a new demonology, angelology, and eschatology. The article states that the narrative topics of Supernatural are based on two themes, i.e., the theology of the spiritual war of the third wave of charismatic Protestantism and the occult outlooks derived from Emmanuel Swedenborg’s system. The main topic of this article is the role of monotheistic mythology in Supernatural.

  • 1 - Traffic Was Slight
Listening to the German wall clock clack away in the near- empty saloon on an overwarm Nebraska summer day might cause her to fetch a gun and shoot the dear old thing, so Marie-Rose waited on her balcony. It ran across the front of the Gilead Astoria Saloon and Hotel, and standing on it always put her in mind of standing on the prow of a sailing ship, the ship being her establishment, the ocean being the unboundaried prairie, the salt air replaced by the arid wind and loamy earth. Highest point in the town, but for the water tower. Folk such as had never seen an ocean would say the prairie must be like the ocean, rolling in waves, or lying flat, or spread to forever beneath the cloudless sky. Marie-Rose thought that kind of ornamental talk silly, but she had seen the ocean, and would admit the similarity. The road came in from the west through the two-saloon frontier town, and back out the other side, to larger and wealthier places, St. Joseph and the branch rail, Omaha and the main line. South was the state of Kansas and the occasional war parties of the Cheyenne, north the Pawnee. Gilead was a little flotilla of hard-put but respectable structures companionably gathered for security and society, a little nub of what passed for civilization in the endless sea of sage and scrubwood, tallgrass and bottlebrush, and damned little else under the blue-white sky. Saloon and card parlor and six rooms upstairs, three occupied by Marie-Rose and the girls in her employ, one a bunk room.

  • Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in the Coffee Shop Alternate Universe
Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Katharine Elizabeth McCain Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Sean O’Sullivan, Advisor Matthew H. Birkhold Jared Gardner Elizabeth Hewitt 1 Copyright by Katharine Elizabeth McCain 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation, Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe, works to categorize and introduce a heretofore unrecognized genre within the medium of fanfiction: The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe (AU). Building on previous sociological and ethnographic work within Fan Studies, scholarship that identifies fans as transformative creators who use fanfiction as a means of promoting progressive viewpoints, this dissertation argues that the Coffee Shop AU continues these efforts within a defined set of characteristics, merging the goals of fanfiction as a medium with the specific goals of a genre. These characteristics include the Coffee Shop AU’s structure, setting, archetypes, allegories, and the remediation of related mainstream genres, particularly the romantic comedy. The purpose of defining the Coffee Shop AU as its own genre is to help situate fanfiction within mainstream literature conventions—in as much as that’s possible—and laying the foundation for future close reading. This work also helps to demonstrate which characteristics are a part of a communally developed genre as opposed to individual works, which may assist in legal proceedings moving forward. However, more crucially this dissertation serves to encourage the continued, formal study of fanfiction as a literary and cultural phenomenon, one that is beginning to closely analyze the stories fans produce alongside the fans themselves.
