Organizational Culture and Identity: A Case Study from the Australian Football League Gervase A. Haimes A thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy VICTORIA UNIVERISTY School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development August 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis comprises research that was undertaken between January 2000 and December 2004 into the organizational culture and identity of Fremantle Football Club, a professional sporting organization that competes in an elite national football competition, the Australian Football League. The thesis began with a review of the contemporary literature on the principal topic, organizational culture and identity. The literature was subsequently used to frame and explain the approach taken in the research, which was to explore culture and identity as distinguishable, inter-dependent concepts integral to the functioning of sports organizations. The justification for the need to explore their impact in professional sporting organizations, because of a gap in our knowledge, was also provided. The research was conducted as a single qualitative case study that enabled an in-depth investigation into how Fremantle Football Club’s culture and identity were formed and how they influenced its structure, strategy, behaviour and performance. Significantly, the research covered the entire history of the club since its inception in 1994, revealing three distinct periods in which culture and identity were strongly influenced by the values and beliefs of the club’s leaders, particularly the CEOs, as well as board members, senior management and coaches. The first period comprised a time of self-absorption with an inappropriate culture that saw it in frequent conflict with external stakeholders as on-field success eluded it.

The dedicated round highlights the contribution multicultural communities have made to the game’s history and welcomes new communities to embrace Australian Football as fans, players, umpires and administrators. Across Victoria, there are a number of fantastic multicultural and indigenous programs which continue to bring people from all backgrounds and walks of life together. Programs including Laguntas, Kickstart, Multicultural School Programs, Towards Zero Diversity Squads and the All Nations high-performance team are enabling young talent to be identified and have access to more opportunities to become the next crop of AFL stars. One way AFL Victoria is connecting these programs to the talent pathway is via our VFL Multicultural Ambassadors, who are assisting with these participation opportunities in the community. The VFL competition this year boasts nine Multicultural Ambassadors, including former AFL Multicultural Ambassador Ahmed Saad – now at Coburg – along with James El Moussalli (Essendon), Kenny Ong (Sandringham), Michael Tang (Port Melbourne), Jack Johnstone (Williamstown), Emmanual Jakwot, Cory Machaya (Casey Scorpions), Josh Porter and Brad Xavier (Werribee).

Newsletter April 2020 SEASON 2020 2020 is a year of unprecedented challenges. We hope you and your family stay fit and well. We are hopeful of staging the 1985 Reunion and End of Year Functions when things return to normal. There will Be Newsletters in June, August and OctoBer to keep you informed. TERRY WHEELER 157 games, 1974-83, Coached 91 games 1990-94 Profile written by Ross Brundrett IF you ask Terry Wheeler, he’ll tell you there are worse things than getting knocked off your motorbike at speed, after hitting a feral goat in the outback. He woke up two days later in Broken Hill Hospital with nine broken ribs, a punctured right lung, a cracked shoulder blade, a broken bone in his neck and no memory of the last 40km of that fateful ride in the bush near his mother’s hometown of Tibooburra in central NSW. But according to the man himself, it wasn’t the hardest hit he has suffered in his lifetime. “That would be when I was playing with the Bulldogs and I ran into (Geelong hard man) Ray Card. The ball had been kicked towards the John Gent Stand flank and I was charging at it and so was Ray and we both had our heads down and bang … I think I got about 40 stitches,” he said with a chuckle. The fact that he can laugh at all shows just how well he has recovered since his close encounter with the goat last November. That was the most recent of a long list of treks that have taken him and his adventure bike around most parts of Australia, sometimes with his old Bulldog teammates, Bruce Reid and Peter Welsh, and sometimes on his own.
