Hellier admitted that early on it was a daunting experience given the credentials of the players who rolled through the VFL club. “Initially, I found myself pinching myself when I had all these high class AFL boys standing in front of me and listening to me,” Hellier said. But he has grown into the position, become more comfortable and really enjoyed the role. Collingwood VFL coach Dale Tapping said Hellier has proved a fi ne leader in more ways than one as the VFL Magpies enjoy what shapes to be their best ever VFL season. With seven rounds of the home and away season remaining, Collingwood is sitting sixth with eight wins, three shy of its best ever home and away record. Tapping said Hellier, who played alongside Josh Kennedy, Tom Hawkins, Chris Dawes, Matt Thomas, Robbie Warnock and dual Liston Trophy winner Shane Valenti, during his two years at Sandringham Dragons, is a player who has the admiration of all the Collingwood players. He noted that Hellier, an electrician, put in long hours before he even got to training, but you would never know by the way he prepares for training and on match day. “Jack gives great effort for every minute of every game. He has great respect from everyone at Collingwood,” Tapping said. “He’s been very good. He’s developed into a very good player and his leadership has gone to another level, too. “He’s been one of the main reasons in my eyes for the FAST FACTS turnaround in our fortunes. We have been pretty consistent and Jack has played a big role in that in terms of connecting JACK HELLIER with the AFL boys and bringing them in with the VFL.
