International Jazz News - January 2015 TORONTO, ON - September special shows at the Rex Hotel included: From New York, the leBoeuf Brothers, and Tim Ries with the East Gypsy band, Forq, featuring Adam Rogers, Nir Felder’s Golden Age Quartet, and Dave Liebman with Samuel Blais. From Chicago it is the Hans Luchs Organ Trio, from Montreal the Parc-X Trio. There will be a Coltrane tribute featuring Pat LaBarbara with the Kirk MacDOnald Quintet, and a back to school concert by the Humber College Faculty Jam. Regular performers include: The Excelsior jazz Band on Sundays, Run Stop Run and the U of T Jazz Ensembles on Mondays, the Richard Whiteman group on Tuesdays, The Brett Higgins Group on Wednesdays, Kevin Quain on Thursdays, The Hogtown Syncopators on Fridays and Danny Marks on Saurdays. October special shows include: from New York Brenda Earle Stokes, From Nova Scotia Gene Smith with David Braid, From Montreal and New York Fraser Hollins & Anthony T. Lee with Adrean Farrugia’s Aether, From Itly Andrea Marcelli with Robert Occipinti, Ftom Ohio Pete Mills with Ted Warren, from Amsterdam Norbert Kigging Quartet, From Vancouver Eli Bennet CD release and from Montreal Joe Sullivan & Andre White. Regular performers include: Sundays is the Excelsior jazz Band, Mondays it is the University of Toronto Jazz Ensebles, Tuesdays is Nick Morgan Trio + 1, Wednesdays is The Worst Pop Band Ever, Thursdays the Ross Woolridge group, Fridays is the Hogtown Syncopators, and Saturdays is Danny Marks. November special shows include: Nova Scotia’s Mile “Shrimp Daddy” Reid, from New York Ralph Alessi with Gary Versace, Drew Gress and Gerald Cleaver; also from New York Peter Cancurra’s “Down Home” Canadian tour. Montreal Jazz Fest winner Pram Trio. Also from Montreal, Joel Miller and Honeycomb. From Texas, the Funky Knuckles. Toronto’s Ross Woolridge Sextet with an Artie Shaw Tribute. Regular performers during November include: The Excelsior Dixieland Jazz band on Sundays; The University of Toronto Jazz Ensembles on Mondays; Tuesdays it is Adam Teixeira’s Tropical Punch; Wednesdays it is the Harley Card Trio; Thursdays it is Kevin Quian; Fridays it is the Hogtown Syncopators and Saturdays it is Danny Marks. Jazz Room In Waterloo The full season started on Sept 5 with trumpeter Ray Podhornik and his six piece band, followed on the 6 by Bassist Dave Young’s Horace Silver Tribute band. On Sept 19 local trumpeter Paul Michel and his Quintet and on the 20th it is Toronto based pianist Brian Dickson with his quintet. On Sept 4 The Grand River Jazz Society presents singer Derek Hines and his trio and on the 5th it is drummer Barry Elmes’s Quintet. October 24 and 265 see workshops hosted by the Grand River Jazz Society. The 31 features Boom Crane from Berlin and Nov 1 has the Petr Cancura Band from New York. Nov 7 is the Stretch Orchestra and Nov 14 is Top Pocket. Nov 21 is Stephen Zurakowski, and Nov 22 is the Don Thompson Trio. Nov 28 is the David Braid Septet and the29 is Joel Miller Quartet from Montreal. Oliver Jones Trio has been making the rounds, playing in Toronto, Burlington and London Ontario in October. In Burlington at the Performing Arts Centre will seeMichael Kaeshammer November 28, madeleine Peyroux and the Art of Time Ensemble on Dec 13 and next march will see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
