NWT put on their racing caps for the fi nal event of the week: the relay. All through the week, biathletes had been raking in the ulus from their individual events, but the relay was the crowd favourite. Each athlete sported a fun hat as a way to show NWT team spirit. “Th e hats are just a tradition we have for the relays,” said fi rst-year biathlete Kim Ring. “It’s fun to stand out.” NWT was the most colourful team on the range on Friday, thanks to quirky shark, dinosaur, bee, fl ower, and viking hats they bought from a craft store. “I think the relays are the favourite, for sure,” said Brieanne Glaicar, who traded in biathlon for this year. “It’s more free. Th ere’s no more stress of practic- ing, so they just have fun.” Glaicar was feeling small pangs of regret as she cheered on her biathlete friends from the sidelines. She made the decision to switch sports when she found out she was eligible to play on the volleyball team. “It would have been a good year for me in biathlon,” she said. “I think I would have seen my best results. I miss it out here.” Some of the biathletes did see their best results over the week. Most of the races saw Hay River biathletes in the top fi ve, with at least one person from Hay River on the podium. Angeline Magtibay claimed the bronze medal in her juvenile 5 km race.
