N Perspectives of a Genuine Crossover Life 'n Perspectives of a Genuine Crossover The sophomore slump hit Urban Dance Squad rather hard, or maybe it just seemed that way based on the consistently high quality of their debut. Life 'n Perspectives of a Genuine Crossover sounds aimless where its predecessor came off as shrewdly eclectic. It's not that there aren't great moments: "Careless" is nice mid-tempo hip-hop with a blues base, and the strangely named "(Thru) the Gates of the Big Fruit" showcases some great turntable work from DJ DNA as well as country-ish slide guitar from Tres Manos. And after years with interesting focuses on countries such as Italy, Belgium and Norway, finally Eurosonic Noorderslag is coming home. Hosting nation Holland is this year’s focus country. Birthday boy is pushing the boat out with a presentation of a range of great Dutch bands. Holland’s musical history in a nutshell The topic of the ‘possible existence of a history of Dutch music’ sometimes generates interesting discussions at the bar at the international music conferences. There’s always a group of registrants that starts singing Golden Earring’s 1972 global monster smash Radar Love straightaway, and there’s that group of hipsters who deliberately start staring ignorantly. ‘Dutch music? Yeah, yeah,’ they say. What’s that? ‘Name a few bands then?’ In recent years we’ve seen a lot of true aficionados of Dutch pop, rock and dance, but also we’ve met the sceptics, who simply denied the existence of such a thing as Dutch music. Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, okay, they acknowledge the Dutch masters of painting. But pop, rock, dance? ‘No, never heard of.’ It’s time to prove them wrong. Holland is focus country, and you’ll know it. To be fair, the awareness of Dutch pop, rock and dance history could do with a little boost.

Sandwiched in between Belgium, Germany and the North Sea, with the United Kingdom just a short hop away and a history of French occupation, The Netherlands is at the crossroads of the German, French and British world and has its eyes on the outside world. Welcome to the Netherlands With a population of almost 17 million people The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated places on earth. But a lot of people on a tiny speck of land means a lot of contact between people with different backgrounds. The Netherlands have a long standing tradition of welcoming visitors from all over the world, best illustrated by the biggest harbor in Europe (Rotterdam), an airport with excellent connections to major cities worldwide (Schiphol airport in Amsterdam) and a centuries long tradition of welcoming immigrants from all walks of life (Amsterdam). No wonder the Netherlands have always been a magnet for immigrants, visitors and outside influences. Combined with the influences of former colonies like Suriname and Indonesia and immigrants from Morocco and Turkey this has resulted in a thriving cultural climate where dozens of cultures meet and cultural exchanges are part of everyday life. However, no scientific research about whether Nederhop indeed became more popular and successful and what the reasons behind this popularity and success are has been conducted yet. To fill up on this gap, this research examines if Nederhop indeed became more popular in the Netherlands in recent years and what the reason or reasons are that Nederhop has become this important in the Dutch music industry and this omnipresent in the Dutch music charts. The research methods are threefold and consist of a chart analysis of three yearly music charts from 1989 onwards, semi-structured interviews with N = 3 people working in the Nederhop music industry, and a survey distributed to N = 254 consumers of (Dutch) hip-hop/rap. Data from the music charts, data from the interviews, and data from the survey show that indeed Dutch hip-hop/rap has become more popular in the Netherlands over the last few years. The research shows that there are five possible explanations for this popularity and success: the ability to distribute music more easily because of technological changes, the availability of information about the genre, positive and negative media attention to the genre, changes in the Dutch culture, and internal changes of the music.
