Anytime a band's first four albums combine to sell over 3 million copies, you're talking about a pretty good job of artist development. In the case of the Cult, these millions in sales have been achieved without any appreciable airplay outside of the AOR realm. At least until now. If ever there was a Cult track that screamed "multi -format mass -appeal smash," "Heart of Soul" is it. Softer and more melodic than anything the band has ever put out, this could do for these guys what "Winds of Change" did for the Scorpions. "Wild Hearted Soul" climbed into the Top 10 at AOR, and sets the stage for the new track. With its lush guitar sound and great performance from vocalist Ian Astbury, this track reunites fans of both the early Love era and the rockers who picked up on the band with "Love Removal Machine." Excitement for the tour has begun, with sales nearing Gold, and Ian, Billy, and the boys currently on the road in Europe, with Canada to follow in December, preceeding the US swing that kicks off in January. The outta the box early gang includes KUPD, WBCN, KTYD, and WLAV, not exactly the sneezable variety. We think this could be perched high atop many playlists by eggnog time. Hard Act Blur. "There's No Other Way", SBK... From the same people who brought us Jesus Jones (Food Records UK, Mike Mena at SBK) comes another potential Alternative/AOR crossover. More and more stations are enjoying tremendous success with genre -bending records that stand out among the (yawn) oh -so -familiar tried and true AOR sounds -- either with hard rockers like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, or accessible alternative tracks like Primal Scream or B.A.D. II. The greatest examples of this phenomenon are undoubtedly Jesus Jones and Nirvana, two bands that have sold in the millions and point to the power of active records for AOR. Up to bat next is Blur. Already in the Top 10 at Alternative, SBK feels they to: could easily be as big as Jesus Jones. The sound is more dreamy and psychedelic than "Right Here," but THERE "S NO OTHER ,,NAE with enough bite and push to make it an easy segue with just about anything an average AOR's library could dish up. And as we move through the '90s, it becomes more obvious than ever that if AOR is to survive, it must embrace and grow with an influx of new songs, new sounds, and new talents like Blur. Seven stations are already a -glow in that embrace, including WNEW and WBCN. Track Action Monty Python, "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life", Virgin.. Given the state of both the world in general and the wacky industry we inhabit, this may be the perfect slice of absurdity to end the year on. Python has long been a classic part of the humor diet of AOR's audience, back to the days when late nite PBS was the only way most Americans could catch the show. Hip, witty, and irrevelant, Python's power peaked with the theatrical releases of the late '70s and early '80s. And with numerous projects completed in various media, this gathering of the troup's classic songs merely adds to the luster of the group that redefined and shattered the boundaries of what ensemble comedy could do and achieve. Mostly a showcase for Eric Idle, besides "Bright Side,"Monty Python Singscontains comedic treats like "The Lumberjack Song," "Every Sperm Is Sacred," and "The Galaxy Song." Long a morning show sign -off staple, toss it on if you've never aired "Bright Side" and see how well it fits into the insanity we call reality, 1991 -- and how many calls you get to play it again and again.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Most Underrated Band of All Time?
:: View email as a web page :: For the past 15 years, Manchester Orchestra has been one of the most popular emo bands on the planet. The one person who has been there every step of the way is founding singer-songwriter Andy Hull, who started the band when he was in his teens and has charted his own growing-up process with each album. Manchester Orchestra has also matured a lot over the years, evolving from an intense and volatile post-hardcore outt on albums like 2009’s Mean Everything To Nothing to the expansive and philosophical indie rock of their latest, The Million Masks Of God, which drops next week. Along the way, they’ve managed to somehow grow their audience while retaining committed fans who connected with the early records as teenagers, including famous acolytes like Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. “Even though everything did well at that time, it wasn’t really accepted by critics and ‘cool’ people,” Hull recently mused about his back catalogue, “and that totally worked in our favor, because it still holds up. It sounds, to me, pretty timeless.” Ahead of the release of The Million Masks Of God, Hull reected on every Manchester Orchestra LP, candidly breaking down the myriad fascinating dramas that marked the process of making each record. Check it out here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... Motif Music Award Winners On a rainy Tuesday night, an eclectic crowd of roughly 400 musicians and music lovers, from folk to hardcore, from hip-hop to EDM, gathered to swap stories, down drinks and receive awards. Thanks to all who came out, and thanks to the nearly 4,000 Motif readers who took the time to vote for their favorites. It was awesome to see so much talent in one room – in this case, at The Met Café in Pawtucket. Different styles, genres, ages and instruments all mixed together, including stand-out performances by the amazing School of Rock teens, the almost-performance-art random rock of The Viennagram, the acoustic stylings of Amanda Salemi and hip-hop duo DirtyDurdie. There was something for everyone, in what was probably the most eclectic mix of styles to share a Rhode Island stage in a very, very long time. Big thanks to all, as well as to our many presenters, hosts John Fuzek and BettySioux Tailor, Rhodies Food Truck (rhodiesfoodtruck.tumblr.com), and of course, The Met Café. Yes, there are winners (you picked ‘em!), but Motif puts on this awards show to celebrate all the amazing music and musical talent that’s fostered and we hope will thrive in our small-population, big- talent state. We don’t so much care who won – we’re just glad so many came out to play. [AMERICANA] By: John Fuzek BEST ACT: Consuelo’s Revenge Consuelo doesn’t need revenge this time around. The band, whose self-termed musical label is “Genericana,” showed they are tops in the Americana category this year.

  • Eric Clapton
