3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Season 2010 finished as a season where we ticked all the boxes – good administration, good football, good support and good fun. This was brought about by having good helpers and the team formed by the committee members, coaches, managers, trainers, first aiders and parents really combined well to put the interests of the Club and the kids first. Well done everyone, there is no doubt this environment led to success both on and off the field.

Off the field we were named ‘Club of the Year’. I believe this award has been coming for a few years and can be attributed to: • The great administrative work of our secretaries (led by Craig this year and Trevor Warner and Peter Yasbek in the past); • The accurate and open stewardship of our treasurer Slats; • The fair play of our coaches; • The attention to detail of our managers; • The great service from our very visible and friendly first aiders; and • The ‘always up to date’ player stats and results from Jane.

All the above are very visible to the junior league who rely on this work to run successful competitions. What set us apart this year was the behavior of our supporters. No ‘Code of conduct’ violations meant the CBDJRL only saw the good bits we do every week of every year! So a very big thank you to all supporters, your good behaviour got us over the line.

On the field we had 18 teams from under 6s all the way to A Grade. It was particularly pleasing to have three under 6s and the return of the under 21s, many of whom were long term players and should be thinking about filling our A grade in the years to come. The down side was that we lost our under 14s which will probably leave a gap that may never be filled. Of the 15 teams that were eligible for semis, 8 reached the semis, 7 of those had ‘two bites of the cherry’ with 3 being minor premiers. Five sides went onto the grand final (U7-2s, U9-2s, U10-3s, U13-1s and U17s) with the U9-2s and U13-1s taking the title of PREMIERS. Congratulations.

The U13-1s win was a great achievement. This is normally the age when our teams struggle (testosterone levels of the opposition always seem higher than ours!) but this side, with a combination of skill and just a touch of testosterone, managed both the minor premiership and premiership. And it was all mixed with drama. A draw after extra time in the first grand final meant a replay on Tuesday night. Who will forget the massive crowd at a cold Terry Lamb Reserve urging our boys to victory. Well done to Coach Mulvihill (the football whisperer!), Pete, Mick, Tony and all the boys for an outstanding feat – our first 13s premiership since 1998.

The U9-2s went through the season undefeated. This was also a fantastic result as the team was a combo of our 8-1s and 8-4s from 2009 where skill levels can be poles apart. Fortunately the boys blended well and under good coaching, managing and training, skills and team work combined to produce a great little team with big hearts. Who will forget all 11 players being involved in the last tackle of the grand final when the opposition had one last chance to clinch a draw. Thank you to Justin, Damian, Tom, Jon and the boys for bringing home the trophy.

The three sides that contested grand finals but finished as ‘runners up’ can also hold their heads high. The U7-2s were the find of the season. New players, new coach, new manager, new trainer, new parents, all immediately gelled together to form a competitive outfit that looked like it had been part of the Club for years. I still feel the pain of that goal on full time which brought on my terrible bout of ‘uncontrollable swearing syndrome’! Never the less, a great season. The U10-3s contained 7 players who had never played league before. The team struggled with numbers all season, but still made the big one. Unfortunately they were starved of possession in the grand final which meant they tackled their butts off, which didn’t leave much in the tank when they finally got the ball. Next year boys. 4

The U17s! I wrote in last year’s book that this team would be one to watch. They hadn’t been in the semis since U11s, but just kept turning up. This side is based on mateship and they went so close this year. They probably peaked a week too early, playing a near perfect game in the final. This display must have been on the news because a thousand supporters turned up to watch them in the grand final. When returning from their warm up, the players couldn’t believe the sea of maroon and gold supporters that awaited their quest for glory. Well done to Waggy, Jim, Walshie and Stump for your work with the boys. I’m sure their turn will come.

To those sides that missed out on the semis, keep plugging away. We will ensure you have the coaches to load you up with the necessary skills and it only takes one or two new players to turn a ‘semi contender’ to a ‘premier contender’.

On the ground improvement front, new lights (which had been promised since last off season) finally got switched on in time for the 13s to prepare for their grand final replay! At least they’ll be ready to go for next year. Our new scoreboard (courtesy of new sponsor Daystar First National Realty) ensures our ground will look the part for future seasons - unfortunately it didn’t say on the box ‘watch out for power lines’! That too will be ready for kick off 2011.

The great year we just enjoyed would not have been possible without our army of volunteers. THANK YOU to: • All the coaches, managers and trainers; • Our coaching co-ordinator Luke Riddell; • The canteen manager Jane Grealy, and all the parents and grand-parents who helped during the year with Matt, Tom and Davo; • Dave Harrington for the newsletter and photos; • Our stats and results recorder Jane Grealy; • Ken Hanratty for updating the Club house honour boards; • Scott Simpson and Ken Slattery for organizing the golf day; • The Ball organizer Anne Simpson; • The scoreboard assembly working group of Tim Bailey, Albert Abela, Simon Standaloft and Steve Moloney; • Club licensee Joe Calamia; • Aidan and Rhys Harrington for all their ‘general duties’ help; and of course • All the Club’s generous sponsors.

Special thanks to two groups. At the start of the year we were really short on first aid officers. Many thanks to David Harrington, Tim Bailey, David Muscat, Dean Roebuck, Kim Dore, Kylie Macdonald, Linley Fanning and Kyllie Tofilau who all volunteered and did a first rate job. Another group worthy of a special thank you is the presentation committee of Raelene Davidson, Karen Rehayem, Kirsten Wilson and Peter Finch – I have no doubt you will be enjoying the great day they have organized while you are reading this.

Two great Club workers ‘retired’ this year. For many years Margaret Yasbek has done both the newsletter and year book. Her boys have now finished so it is only right a current Club member step up. Similarly Ken Hanratty has taken the team photo shots for a thousand years. His youngest just finished 19 continuous playing years with the Club so I think his shutter finger deserves a rest too! Thanks both for your fabulous contributions to the Club for so many years.

Finally, thanks to my fellow Committee members – Craig, Jon, Ken, Geoff, Simon and Dave. I know you make many sacrifices to get your footy jobs done, but believe me, we all appreciate it and remember, “it’s for the kids”. Personally, because we weren’t hosing out minor, annoying ‘fires’ all the time, it was my most enjoyable season. I hope to see you all next year.

John Grealy 5 SECRETARY’S REPORT

My first year as Club secretary will be one for me to remember as ‘filling the shoes’ of Trevor Warner. It was never going to be easy, however with some mentoring and a lot of shared work with John Grealy, I got by. Also knowing that I could always look over my shoulder and see Trevor around the grounds for a quick chat was comforting. We had so many achievements as a Club in 2010. Most of these achievements are obvious and occurred at the ‘pointy’ end of the season, but I would like to mention some of our highlights starting from way back in January.

The year started with a great response at our two registration days with many new players signing up. The number of new registrations for first time players of all ages was excellent with some coming from other clubs as well - in total 80 new players registered. By season kick off we had registered 267 players in the following age groups Minis – 68; Mod – 94; International - 105.

In early February Ken Slattery and I attended the inaugural Western Sydney Rugby League Academy conference held over two days at Campbelltown. This conference was an excellent opportunity to gain insight on how junior rugby league clubs should be run and the type of funding and resources available to our Club. It was also a great platform to meet with our fellow Canterbury Bankstown clubs and Junior league officials to discuss our upcoming season.

During March our pre-season plans were in full swing with many new team officials signing up to help out. With the seasoned veterans showing the way, there were 60 of you in total for me to thank. I want to make special mention of both the first time and returning managers who put 100% into their teams and made it easy for me to communicate Club messages to the players and their parents. I can assure you that other clubs struggle in this department, sometimes with teams turning up at Bill Delauney with no team sheets, not knowing the sign on rules and having no idea of the rules for their teams. It made me proud to see you help them out so we could get the games started on time.

Our standard of coaches and trainers and their ability to lead and mould the skills of young players is also worth mentioning, as well as their discipline for the rules of the game. One more highlight worth mentioning in regards to club officials was the excellent response we had to our call for first aiders. Seven people took up the challenge and learned the skills to provide excellent care at our ground which was second to none - and if the response from other districts visiting was any indication, we were way above their expectations as well. Many thanks to Dave Harrington for coordinating the first aid roster each week. I know we will need a few more first aiders next year, so if you are willing and committed we would love to see you join the team at halfway.

Our 2010 trial games were held over three weekends against Aquinas, Yarrawarrah, and Moorebank Rams with some good hard tussles in all age groups giving our players the workouts needed when preparing for a competition. Thanks to those who refereed during the trials. George Elias and Greg Fuller led the way with a couple of guest appearances by some of our Under 17s players who picked up the whistle and saw what it is like on the dark side. We hope to make the 2011 trials equally successful.

After what seemed to be the longest pre-season on record, April finally rolled around and with Easter out of the way, we kicked off the season without a hitch. It is amazing to watch everything fall into place and everyone get into the weekly routine on what sometimes seemed to be a very crowded park. Hopefully the new lights installed (finally) will see teams spread out across the oval next season and alleviate some of the overcrowding.

From the Secretary’s point of view, the football part of the season is the most rewarding with plenty of opportunity to be out at halfway and see our teams playing each weekend to the best of their abilities. Sometimes being at half way is challenging for Ken and myself because when you 6 pull on the Ground VP vest, you are representing the Junior League and following their rules for the game. Thankfully the challenges are seldom too hard and are easily fixed on the day.

On the social side I think our Club is blessed with such friendly, outgoing people. Our two main events (the ball and the golf day) are a credit to those who organize them. Anne Simpson and her team of ladies made this year’s ball one to remember – though it was difficult to hide from the official photographer! I can’t work out how I managed to be in every second picture, but suspect it was a gee-up by Dave Harrington as pay back for something or other.

I was also lucky enough to play in the Golf day this year with Simmo and Slatts putting on a great day as in previous years. Good to see Grant Hanratty and his dream team taking home the spoils. I have no hesitation in saying that everyone on the day had fun as well as making some new friends.

Finally we made it to the business end of the season. I am so proud of the entire Club - the players, team officials and my fellow committee members - as you all contributed to the overall success of the 2010 season culminating in our Club being named as ‘Club of the Year’ and John Grealy as ‘Volunteer of the Year’.

Congratulations to Jared Kennedy from our U6-3s for being named CBDJRL ‘Mini Div 3 - Player of the Year’ and Jayden Okunbor from our 13s for winning the ‘International U13s to 16s - Player of the Year’.

Congratulations to our U7-2s, U10-3s and U17s for being grand finalists.

Congratulations to our two premiership winning teams, the U9-2s and U13-1s.

Once again thanks to the rest of the Committee for your help, support and friendship during the year - it made my job so much easier. And a final thank you to my wife and family for your understanding and support throughout the year.

See you all in 2011

Alan Wren

Alan was nominated by Ken Hanratty and voted as a Life Member at the Club’s Annual General Meeting in December 2009. Below is Ken’s nomination letter and Alan’s contribution to the Club. Congratulations Alan.

I have been involved with St Christopher’s JRLFC both as a parent and official for over 20 years and in that time I have had the pleasure of associating with many fine people, some of whom have become close friends.

Our Club has been a very successful one over the years due mainly to a good club ethic as well as many dedicated coaches, managers and trainers who have donated their time to teach our children the game of rugby league. Mr Alan Wren is one of those above mentioned people who has served the Club loyally not only as a manager and trainer but at the executive level also.

It is with great pleasure that I nominate Alan Wren for life membership of our Club and have attached a summary of his involvement with the Club.

COACH’S REPORT

As this was my first year coaching I knew I would need a good group of parents for support and I have to say a big thank you to all the parents for their help and encouragement. Special thanks to Linley (our Super Manager) and Peter and Andrew (our assistant trainers).

To Liam (Davo) thanks for the great job you did as Trainer and being a ‘human tackling bag’ for the kids to practice on. To Tom, thanks for filling in for Liam when needed and being the ‘timeout’ enforcer. To the team ‘Awesome’!! We started the season slowly but your improvement was excellent.

Hope to see you all back at the Club in 2011.

PLAYER PROFILES

Bianca Cutrupi: Bianca was our hardest trainer and this showed on the field, she was an excellent cover defender and learnt how to reach for the line scoring 8 tries for the year. Well done Bianca.

Matthew Cutrupi: Playing with his older sister, when Matthew was focused he showed his true potential with good runs and strong tackles. Good work Matt.

15 Jack Dore: Jack was playing his first year of footy and quickly picked up the game and crossed for his first try half way through the year. I’m sure there are many more to come. Well done Jack

Annalise Erskine: Known as ‘Fluffy’ to the family this nickname was not an accurate reflection as Annalise was one of the toughest in the team. Improved every week and will be a bigger force next year. Good stuff Fluff.

Nathan Fanning: Nathan improved over the season and showed his best cannon ball running when he powered up his shoes the night before. Good year Nath, see you in 2011.

Saadi Kourouche: Our highest try scorer with 38, when he got out in the open he could not be stopped. Saadi also proved a very effective defender. Great year mate – you’ll be huge in the 7s!

Zane Kourouche: Another one playing with their older sibling, Zane quickly picked up the idea of the off load to Saadi. However as his confidence grew the off loads stopped and he ran the ball well. Looking forward to coaching you next year Zane.

Ethan Leggett: This was Ethan’s first year of footy and unfortunately he missed a few games mid season, but on return his confidence improved as did his game, with strong tackles and fast runs, scoring his first try in the Under 6 gala day. Well done Ethan.

Totoa Lynch: What can I say, a coach’s dream when looking for a hard tackling mean machine. One of the deadliest fends anyone has ever seen in a 4 year old. Looking forward to your big season next year.

Connall Millar: Connall started of the season slowly however by the end he too was a tackling machine, who was nearly impossible to pass. Hope to see you next season.

Thomas O’Grady: Thomas started the season slowly but as his confidence grew he showed good potential with his tackle assists and strong runs. Keep smiling big guy.

Jesse Sleiman: Jesse was a late addition to the team and proved a real team player putting in 100% every week. He also kicked our first goal of the season and crossed for a number of tries. Top stuff Jesse.

COACH’S REPORT

The 2010 footy season was upon us and with it brought a venture to a new football Club which would be both a rewarding and refreshing change. Our U6 team this year was made up of a mixture of boys who played footy last year, to boys for whom it was their first footy season, to those new to the Club entirely, and two boys that are eligible for Under 6 next year. Considering this the boys all came together during the year and played every game as if they had been together for a number of years and grew in confidence and stature as the year progressed.

We had a very successful year in 2010 where we played 14 games, won 12, drew 1, lost 1 (by 2 points) and by the end of the year all the boys developed into both very good football and team players. All but 2 of the boys are going up to the U7s next year and to Sean and Owen who are still eligible for the U6s, good luck next year.

Finally I would like to thank our Manager Kylie and Trainer Michael for their assistance during the year and in helping me feel at home in my first year at St Christopher’s. I would also like to thank the parents of our team for helping out at training and game days making my job a lot easier as well.

17 MANAGER’S REPORT

Wow! My first season as Manager and what a season it was. Not only did I have the pleasure of meeting some great little footballers, but also their families. Having great families just made the season so much more fun.

Watching the boys gain in confidence each week was well worth the early morning starts. Shane and Michael have developed some great little playmakers and tackling machines for the future. I only hope they can take off next year where they left off this year. Two of our little guys (with big hearts) will remain in the 6s next year which is a bit sad for us, but definitely an asset for the 6s next year, good luck boys.

I need to give a big thank you to Shane and Michael for giving up their time not once, but twice a week for the boys. Those cold nights were well worth it come Saturday and seeing the boys play. And you both made my job so much easier always doing what you needed to do.

To our Parents I say a HUGE thank you. Not once did I need to go looking for help. Be it home ground duties or touch judges, someone was always there to help. Our turns at the raffles always seemed to be fun. It was a great way to socialize and get to know each other better which I would like to think has created many friendships for years to come. Gotta love The Diggers for the family!

The ball boy duties were also always covered with the bonus of having a few older brothers in our team. Thanks boys, the team really loved having you running the line with them I loved again not having to go in search of help.

Hope to see everyone back out on the paddock next year so we can do it all again.

PLAYER PROFILES

Sean Amy: Sean was our youngest player, but was one of our toughest, playing/competing well above his weight and age with determined hit ups through the middle.

Christian Calamia: Sneaky. Our dummy half who would catch the other teams out by scoring some great tries from dummy half down the short side. Strong in defence and eager to get up and tackle.

Zacarie Ceissman: New to footy and the Club, Zac developed into a very strong running and confident player as the year progressed scoring a number of great tries and getting us to go forward.

Jarrod Field: Jarrod was another new to footy and the Club and continued to improve and become more confident as the season progressed.

Jared Kennedy: Jared had an outstanding year in his first year with the Club and with some brilliant cover defence at fullback. He helped guide and give confidence to our team with his evasive running resulting in him scoring some great tries. Jared received CBDJRL Mini Div 3 Best & Fairest Player 2010 award.

Cameron Macdonald: Cameron had a very good first year of footy. He grew in confidence with some very strong and determined running gaining valuable metres every time for our team using his speed.

18 Owen Millar: Owen was a tackling machine. When we needed someone to stand up he would be there and tackle everything that moved. He scored some great tries also and played with experience beyond his years.

Luke Moloney: Then there was LUKE. He was our most improved player by far this year and combined with his defence, his attack was tough and devastating. He only knew one way, straight through the middle like a wrecking ball. Look forward to next year.

Blake Muscat: Blake grew in confidence as the season went on and realised he had speed to burn scoring some great run away tries leaving the other team behind.

Blake Shearer: Blake was new to footy and the Club and considering he had no footy background formed a good understanding of the game. Strong running scoring some great tries too.

Brandon Tandy: Brandon was also new to footy and the Club and only played a limited number of games starting into the season proper. He showed some good determined running at times, but his defence was a standout showing determination and no giving up in defence.

TEAM REPORT

What a sensational year the boys had and it was a pleasure to see them develop into a great team over the course of the season. The boys’ ability to score tries was evident from the start at the trials and continued throughout the year. The boys also learnt the importance of defence and the need to work together to remain competitive in all their games. The boys always remained positive and had a lot of fun the whole season.

A number of our boys were returning from previous years and we also had some first time players who were welcome additions to the playing group and each player brought something to the team. The boys in general were good listeners at training and really began to improve when we increased training to two sessions a week and for the most part played to the game plan each week.

In a season that again was interrupted due to weather conditions the boys enjoyed getting together with their team mates at every opportunity, be it at training, game day or fund raising for the club. In a year full of personal highlights for each of the boys and the team it is ironic that the most important lesson was taught in a loss. In the early rounds the boys were outplayed by a very well drilled opposition team and as a group they desired to test themselves when the teams met again. In the return game at Bill Delauney the boys came out and played an absolute cracker of a game, with our defence really unsettling the opposition side and we just went down. However the boys’ spirit and their determination made them winners in our eyes and their improvement was recognised by the opposition coach who complimented our team by saying it was the most challenged his team had been. 20

On behalf of the boys and the parents I would like to thank David Cosgrove (Coach), Simon Standaloft (Trainer), Justin Cassar (Coach/Trainer) and Hassan Saleh (Skills Coach) who all stepped up during the year and ran the training sessions and also fulfilled official roles on game day. The boys really responded to the positive attitudes and the focus on learning the basic skills of the game and the emphasis on having fun. We also benefit from the tireless work of our wonderful manager Nerissa Bailey, who always ensures that the boys are ready for the game and ensures that the parents know what is happening each weekend.

I would also like to thank all the parents, grandparents, families and friends who support the team in such a positive and encouraging manner and for ensuring that the boys get to training and game day each week. They also willingly put their hands up for any game day duties and willingly support the club through the fund raising activities that are for the benefit of the players.

Finally I would like to thank on behalf of the team John Grealy, Craig Jordan, club committee members and the first aid officers for the commitment and dedication that they put into the club. The committee works tirelessly for the club, this year we saw the installation of the scoreboard, introduction of photographs in the newsletter and the commencement of upgrade to the lights, and this is all for the benefits of the players and the supporters. The boys would also like to thank Jane Grealy and all the volunteers in the canteen / BBQ as this is a favourite retreat after the game.

In relation to the elements of a good football team we ticked all the boxes, great club with proud traditions, good coaching staff, solid front office, great playing group and great supporters. We look forward to all the boys returning next year in the Under 7s and continuing to play our great game and in the words of Jack Gibson ‘Played Strong, Done Good’.

MANAGER’S REPORT:

To all the boys on the team, I would like to thank them for their effort and enthusiasm this season. It was such a joy managing a team of boys whose faces lit up when they saw their team mates, loved the game and gave 110% each week. I would like to thank our coach and trainers for their dedication and all of our wonderful parents and grandparents for getting the boys to training and the games each week, and for their help with the BBQ, canteen, raffles and other jobs around the club. You all made my job easier. I would like to say a special thankyou Mathew Walker, who undoubtedly wrote the most entertaining, and comprehensive match reports each and every week and who also wrote our team report and the ‘Player Profiles’. Well done Matt it was riveting reading each week and I always looked forward to the next one. Lastly, thanks to Goop Guys NSW for supplying drink bottles for the boys as well as the weekly ‘Man of the Match’ trophy.

PLAYER PROFILES

Kaled Arnaout: Joined the team mid way through the season was a good defender and fearless ball runner who was a great team player.

Trent Bailey: Trent is one of the best cover defenders in the age group and developed into a regular try scorer, who remained a true team player.

Vincent Cassar: Vincent really came of age this season and added an extra dimension to the team in defence as he is a strong defender and willing runner.

Steven Coble: Steven plays a very direct and strong game and was a hard worker who willingly took the ball up and has a future in the forwards.

21 Braith Cosgrove: Braith was a true team player who was a willing defender and began to shine in the second half of the season as his confidence increased.

Sean Foster: Sean was a natural ball runner who always made ground with the ball and developed well as a defender, a great first year.

Ryan Jeffree: Ryan had a great year and was a punishing defender and also a great ball runner. Towards the end of the season a number of teams stayed away from Ryan’s side of the field.

Jordan Saleh: A real natural who loved to run the ball and had a knack for finding the try line and improved in defence with each game, another first timer who had a great year.

Bailey Standaloft: Bailey puts in a 110% each game in attack and defence and continued to improve in every game. He developed into a very good goal kicker.

Isaac Tahhan: Isaac took a few games to settle in his first year, but one of our most improved players throughout the season and was not afraid to stand his ground in defence and take the ball up.

Alexander Walker: Started the season on fire, slowed down but developed a great passing game and was always looking to offload and returned to form late in the season playing first receiver.

COACH’S REPORT

This was my first year as coach and I can genuinely say that it was the most rewarding experience I’ve had. The boys are a fantastic bunch, all with their own different talents that made each training session and game a memorable time.

From our first game the boys played well as a team and we were hopeful for the season ahead. We had some great games with the mercy rule imposed and then some games that brought us back to earth, but deep down we all knew that we had the talent and the passion to give it a crack.

With the great support of our Trainer (Brett), Manager (Brenton), Club supporters and the parents of this great team we made it to the Grand Final. The result was not what we wanted and to lose by 2 points was heart wrenching. To the boys’ credit, they were MEN when it came to defeat.

My final thank you is to the boys. You are a credit to the Club and your parents and I hope you all make it back next year.

23 MANAGER’S REPORT

2010 proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding year for the U7s and it was a pleasure to be involved. The year was most successful with the only major disappointment - going down by two in a dramatic and exciting grand final. Given that we had six kids who had never played the game before, two from other clubs and three backing up from last year, it was an amazing effort to get so close to winning the big one.

The kids throughout the year were fantastic and had lots of fun, which I hope can continue next year. It was obvious that as the year progressed the level of improvement was noticeable and team cohesion became apparent which augurs well for next year.

In closing I would like to thank Steve for his passion, enthusiasm and tireless efforts as coach, Brett for his training duties and all the parents who continued to provide help throughout the year. Hopefully we will see everyone again next year for an equally rewarding and fun season - but with one difference – A PREMIERSHIP!!

PLAYER PROFILES

Michael Forrester: Small in stature but massive in heart. Always there to make the tackle and always listened to the coach. An absolute joy to coach and manage.

Klayton Kilpatrick: A class player returning from last year. When on his game made a massive difference to the result. Always a threat to score a try.

Ethan Burke: Quick and skilful with the ability to score when most needed. A solid, consistent year.

Ali Nabulsi: New player to the Club who arrived during the year and for someone who hasn’t played before had a great start to his league career. Defensively excellent.

William Roebuck: Another who returned this year, loves the game and his passion was infectious. A great team player who continued to improve.

Thomas Davenport: A skilled and classy player who has an excellent, fantastic footy brain. Thomas had a brilliant year and was our leading try scorer.

Marshall Poynter: A new player to the game who surprised everyone with his natural talent, explosive pace, try scoring ability and defensive skills. A sensational debut year.

Braidon Brito: Another new player to the game who constantly gave his all to help his mates. Continued to improve throughout the year and will only get better.

Alex Passarelli: New player who always took on the burden of making good yards and continued to put the team in good field position. A very good and consistent year.

Blake Hayes: New player from another club and was a very important addition to the team. His passion for the game is unquestioned and knowledge second to none. A very reliable and consistent year.

Connor Hains: A player who had an exceptional debut season. His improvement was dramatic and for someone to have never played before it was an excellent year.

COACH’S REPORT

The 2010 season was the first taste of playing rugby league for 7 out of the 12 players in the Under 8-2s. Our team at times was very good and you would not have thought that these boys had not played footy together before.

We started off well with the first few games being close in quite high scoring matches (sometimes the score did not reflect just how hard the boys played) but it was being inconsistent with the football, match fitness and our intensity that sometimes let us down. Overall the teamwork displayed was fantastic and it was the willingness to listen (most of the time) and learn, which in- turn saw the team grow in confidence each week.

The season went too quick and with more time spent on the basic skills, I’m sure we would have had more success. The skills take practice, so boys practice on your mum, dad, brother or sister. The effort will have your technique sharp and ready for the next season.

I would also like to thank Peter Dore (trainer) and Collette Waters (Manager) for their continual support and help at training and games. To all the parents, thank you for your support and help with the canteen, BBQ and the raffles at the Diggers (it was a great excuse for a FEW cold ones). I hope the boys and parents enjoyed the year and I look forward to seeing you all return next year. 25

PLAYER PROFILES

Nathan Dore: Shared the dummy half role this year and led the team as one of the more experienced players. Nathan’s tackling technique was classic boot lace tackling. Well done Nathan.

Liam Bryce: A new player to the side and a very welcome one. Liam was eager to learn and it showed as his defence and attacking skills improved every game. Good year Liam.

Leon Dib: Also shared the dummy half role and made some great in and away breaks in attack. Leon’s tackling technique improved throughout the year. Well done Leon.

Joshua Silk: Silky, a three year veteran of the Club, thought he would have a year off, but when we asked Silky to train, and we were very glad he decided to stay for the season as the strong runs and solid defence was needed. Good team player Silky.

Lachlan Maric: Lachlan was our leading try scorer this season with his devastating runs and his ability to break through the defence line. Lachlan was a great asset to the team. Fantastic first year Lachlan.

Riley Jennings: Another one of our more experienced players that shared the pivotal dummy half role and gave direction on the field. Riley is a real team player with a high tackling workload and was the mastermind of the run around with Nathan. Great year Riley.

Malakai Manoa: is another one of our big boys making plenty of ground, sometimes in a jog with 3 or 4 defenders on him and still being able to fall over the try line. Strong season Malakai.

Zac Standaloft: Lofty also a 4 year veteran of the Club showed he still had a great in and away step after missing most of last season with a broken leg. Lofty also had a good year with the boot, rarely missing. Good stuff mate.

Angus Lake: Continued to improve throughout the year. Angus became a very strong runner in attack and scored some gutsy tries and was courageous in defence. Big season Angus.

Omar Arnaout: Joined the team mid season and not having played before, listened carefully, and within a few games was making strong runs and solid around the legs tackles. Good first year Omar.

Jacob Young: Improved throughout the season making strong runs straight up the middle and getting more involved in defence. Well done Jacob.

Zac Ali: Zac’s footy improved greatly this season making plenty of yards in attack and became solid in defence. Consistent performance Zac.

COACH’S REPORT

This season we had five boys who had started their footy together at U6s and five new boys who had stepped up to Division 1. Our opening encounter to the 2010 season saw us play last year’s premiers Bankstown Sports and certainly the team to beat again. We didn’t win that game…. we actually got towelled by 54 points. Over the following weeks we put in some big training sessions and the boys responded great and really started playing well. At training we tried to enforce the simple things like ball control and also their passing game. Defensively we concentrated on solid tackling and pairing up in tackles.

The boys’ commitment to some hard training sessions paid off with a solid win at Hammondville over Moorebank which seemed to lift the team to another level. All the boys really gelled together after this win and had the belief they could win games. Backing up with a great win the following week to make it two in a row gave us some real hope for a competitive season.

The coming weeks saw our captain Aidan Davidson sidelined with a serious infection as we came against some tough opposition. Unfortunately we dropped a couple of games and then had a couple of wash outs. We knew we could still do some damage to some of the top sides and that was what we set out to do.

The back half of the season I tried to get the boys to play with more passion and boy did they respond. After our draw against the Dragons we were sitting in 6th position and most of our remaining games were against teams above us. We needed to win matches to be a chance for the semis and the boys were up for the challenge.

27 Round 14 saw us up against Greenacre who were coming 2nd or 3rd and during our warm up we spoke to the kids about playing as a team and helping each other for the full game right to the bell. This was a special game for me because every kid on the park that day put in 100%. We were the smallest side in the comp and we virtually bashed them out of the game. We were up 28 -24 with about one minute to go and the Tigers were about 10 out from our line. We defended the full set and on the last play I think the whole team was in the tackle to hold up the try. What a fantastic effort from a bunch of seven year olds.

The final round came down to some pretty tough maths - we had to beat the undefeated leaders (Sports) at and everyone above us had to lose! But I knew the boys had come a long way this season and would really put on a big game this time. We started out ordinary and things weren’t really going our way, but the boys just hung in and defended exceptionally well. The final score of the match was 28-6 which was no indication of the game and was the lowest winning margin Sports had all season (including the Grand final which they won 28-0!!!). This was a great credit to all the boys and capped off a great season, we are all very proud of you.

Special thanks to Raelene Davidson our manager who again does so much for this team. She is probably the most organised person I know and your efforts are much appreciated by all. Also thanks to Darren Miller our trainer. You made some great contributions to our team this year and these were really appreciated by myself and the boys. Also a special thanks to all the mums and dads that helped out during the year working on the BBQ, canteen, linesmen, timekeepers etc. It’s great to see you all involved.

Well another season completed, they just get quicker and quicker. It has been a great pleasure to coach this side again this year and I have been so excited about their progress. I think that every boy has had an exceptional season and hope to see them all playing again next year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Nathan Bishara: Nathan improved with every game this season. He really gets out there and has a go. Nathan looks his best with the ball in his hands and made some great runs this year. Nathan has a real passion for the game and has a great attitude on and off the field.

Aidan Davidson: Aidan was our captain this year and relished the role. Aidan really stepped up this year and put in 100% every game he played. Aidan has a very competitive attitude and really inspires the team with every tackle and run that he makes. Unlucky not to take out the best and fairest this year after missing a couple of games - Another strong season for Aidan.

Reily Dundas: Reily would be our most consistent player, almost Hindmarsh like. He goes about his game in a quiet manner, but he always gets the job done. He is our most improved this year and a player you can always count on. Always takes the ball up strong and gets involved in almost every tackle

Brodie Erskine: Brodie is a great kid who is always happy to be playing footy. His improvement was great this year. The back half of the season he made some big tackles when it counted and also loves to get the ball and take them on. Brodie has a great presence on and off the field

Dylan Hema: Dylan is a pleasure to coach. He puts in every game and puts a lot of pressure on himself to do well which in most cases he does. Dylan was our leading point scorer this season and is usually good for a try or two. Dylan is a great player to watch and a real talent. Great attitude on and off the field.

Mark Kitiona: Mark always makes some great contributions to this team. He is a great ball runner and this season was no exception. Mark made some great tries flying up the sideline. Also made a couple of try saving tackles running down the opposition. Has great leg speed. 28 Lachlan McAlpine: Lachlan really stepped up his game this year especially in the back half of the season. He really started to understand the fundamentals. When he runs a hole there is no stopping him. Lachlan was always in the right place at the right time this year in attack and defence. Our best and fairest player this year and deservedly so. Also a great kid on and off the field. A really great season Lachy.

Meihana Nelson: Probably the funniest kid I’ve met, never stops talking and never stands still but put a footy in his hand and no one can catch him. I think Meihana has great ability on the field and loves to run the ball. Meihana made some great tries this year and had a terrific season.

Jon Pengue: Jon had a great season this year and bagged a heap of tries. Jon always puts pressure on himself to perform and usually performs very well. Jon played predominately at first receiver and set up and scored some great tries when it counted. Jon also made some great tackles and set the examples for our bigger guys.

Callum Vella: Callum had a great season again at dummy half, moving the ball out quickly laying a platform for our go forward. A couple of tidy tries from dummy half for some crucial points. Always had awareness of the tackle count to promote the footy. Callum really enjoyed his footy this year except for his big shiner against St Johns.

We had a Ball…

COACH’S REPORT

We started this season knowing it was going to be challenging after losing four players to the top grade and having three new players that had not played rugby league before. With the larger field, new rules and five new boys coming into the team it was some time before we gelled and started to play as a team.

After we settled into training and played our first couple of games, it was obvious there was plenty of work to be done. I’d like to congratulate the boys for their big efforts at training as we eventually began to improve and make opposition teams work a lot harder if they were to defeat us. In the end we walked away with one convincing win and one draw, but the improvement in the way the boys played as the season progressed is what gave me the most satisfaction.

A big thankyou has to go to our trainer Dave Raish for his assistance in coaching the boys, as it was definitely a two man job, Kyllie Tofilau-Swain for a great job in her first year as manager and part time first-aid officer, and to all the parents who helped at training and game days.

Finally, another big thank you to all the parents who never stopped supporting and encouraging the boys and coaching staff, and to the boys (and their parents) who played up from the U8 teams when we were down on players.

I’m expecting bigger things next year from this group of boys as they continue to grow in confidence in their own ability and I hope to see you all next year. 30 PLAYER PROFILES

Camille Sleiman: Came back to the Club after a year away and immediately showed he had not lost any skills. Captained the side all year and led by example with hard running in attack and bruising defence. Camille’s kicking game improved as the year progressed, and his kick restarts were excellent. Camille had a great year and still has room for improvement.

Jordan Raish: Started the year with great enthusiasm and from the first training to the last game it did not lessen. Jordan showed that his game has gone to another level with good straight hard running and improved defence. Never stopped trying on the paddock both in the games and at training. Also regularly played for the 10-3s, playing the second half of their grand final.

Vincent Quintal: For a kid playing his first year of rugby league, Vincent sure learnt fast how to find the try line with speed and strength running the ball. He had bruising defence and a great desire to play and win, which rubbed off onto other kids around him. Vincent will definitely be an asset to the Club as he learns more about the game and gains more confidence.

Jordan Tofilau: Had a very good season. Tackled like a demon, cutting down much bigger players in defence. With the ball in his hands he has good speed and evasive skills. Learnt to spread out in defence and attack and not clutter the play the ball area. Needs to be involved more to see his full potential. Bigger things to come.

Eddie Coble: Made improvements as the year went on. Learnt to tackle better and run harder in attack. Never stopped trying to learn at training even when it meant certain injury. Definitely has a big heart and keeps improving.

Daniel Cutrupi: Had another great year with us. He pulled off some excellent cover defence tackles and ran the ball with nice swerving ability in attack. Daniel’s overall game has improved, and shows a flare to be an outside back or fullback in years to come. Daniel also was another one of our boys that would put his hand up to play in the U10-3s.

Harrison Abela: Another who only started playing this year. Learnt some good foundation rugby league skills this year and will only improve. Skilful attacking runs were a highlight and was enthusiastic in defence.

Ben Moloney: Continued on as our first receiver this year and showed plenty of improvement with his catching and passing under plenty of pressure with defenders bearing down on him. Made big improvements with his defence and developed good teamwork skills with the dummy half and other players.

Luke Fakhouri: Was thrust into dummy half in the trials and stayed there all year despite never playing before. Showed tenacious defence and toughness leading our defensive line to go forward. Learnt plenty of skills at dummy half including last tackle darts and a very nice run around with first receiver.

Josh Walker: Had an awesome year as one of our best attackers and learnt to run a lot straighter when required. Tackled with plenty of enthusiasm and was always trying when it was required. With more concentration at training will become a very skilful player who has good aggression.

Dean Gazalis: After missing the start of the season, Dean joined our team and helped us after we lost two players early in the season. From his first game it was obvious he had played before and showed a very good tackling technique. After Dean settled in and we could see his potential he became a big asset for us and when he played to the best of his ability could be the best player on the park. Dean is a good kid with a good attitude who will only get better.

COACH’S REPORT

Congratulations to the U9-2s on winning the competition as UNDEFEATED PREMIERS!

This started off looking to be a challenging year with four new additions to the higher grade; Callum Whyte, JD McCullock, Josh Fuller and William Macdonald. Throughout the season we placed heavy emphasis on sportsmanship and good attitude towards team mates rather than winning games and throughout the season these boys rapidly grew, not just as singular outstanding players but as a team.

In saying that, massive improvement was made by each and every boy in the team resulting in hard hitting, strong defence and shape in attack that seemed to leave the rest of the competition behind in mini-league. The boys made me extremely proud in how receptive they were to critique and guidance throughout the year and I thoroughly enjoyed coaching these crazy, energetic kids. 88% of the time!

Massive thankyous to: • Old JD, a mentor figure for the boys and a great help to me as a coach. • Tom Quine, the trainer that put a smile on the boys’ faces and kept them motivated on- field, and • Damian Titmuss, our manager whose updates were extremely convenient and whose organisational work was top notch. 32

Thank you to all the parents for bringing the boys out every week and for all the help that was put in by all. Such a good season wouldn’t have been possible without your efforts and support

MANAGER’S REPORT

Congratulations boys. What a fantastic season. This year we welcomed five newcomers to our side with Kueva being new to the club and Callum, JD, Josh and William coming up from last year’s U8-4s. They were graded and merged with seven boys (Blake, Cameron, Christian, Jack, Lachlan, Noah and Ryan) returning from the U8-1s. Together these twelve boys formed a team, which proved to be a winning combination.

This season saw the team grow in confidence each week. The player combinations got better and players’ skills sets improved. At one time or another, each and every one of the boys stamped their name on a game. It was superb to see such improvement each week.

On behalf of the team officials, we are extremely proud of you boys; the way you all showed up each week to train and play. Your hard work and continued support for each other every week has been rewarded with a Premiership.

On behalf of the boys, I would like to thank our coach, Justin D’Astoli and our trainers Tom Quine and Jon D’Astoli. Many thanks for setting aside your valuable time each week to help the boys both on and off the field. Our season would not have been possible without your hard work. Thank you to all the family and friends who supported the team throughout the season. A special thanks to those who helped out with the team duties on game day; it made my job as Manager a lot easier. I hope to see you all again next season.

PLAYER PROFILES

Lachlan Jordan: And you thought Usain Bolt could run! Locky is a little speed demon that ran rings around just about everyone on the field constantly throughout the year, always striving for at least one try a game and not afraid to get in his teammates’ ears. A tough little rooster with good leadership skills. Great attitude all round. Ta Lock.

Blake Wiley: Blake would rather talk my ear off than run a lap. Getting Blake focussed was probably the most difficult thing to do at training, although he does make me laugh. His natural ability and general feel for the game was enjoyable to watch (especially when he got angry). Blake’s brain flies in about a thousand different directions and I don’t think many of his questions through the year had to do with footy. Nonetheless an asset to the team, strong in his defence with good technique in his tackles. An extremely bubbly and fun fella, cheers Blake.

Kueva Lynch: This kid is a freak. A genius player who sports outstanding attitude, commitment and constant improvement. Kueva played captain most games as a leader by example. An inspiring member of the team leading in the tackle count game in and game out and not afraid of a good hit up either. Quietly confident and more than happy to show his skills, a true pleasure to coach. Awesome stuff Kuev.

Cameron Riley: Tough member this boy. Cameron is a strong willed player that loves his footy. Always kicking around a footy and always keen to get in and play, Cameron is dominant in his football, he has good ball skills and a great chip and chase. Hope to see you next year Cam.

Callum Whyte: One of the smaller players in the team Callum was lively and attentive in his training. He played a large role on the field as our first hooker. Good at putting on heavy pressure 33 in defence from the marker position as well as out of the defensive line, Callum often forced mistakes from the opposition. His service from dummy half improved drastically throughout the year. He has done well coming up from 4s and is always enjoyable to watch when the mongrel comes out in him.

Christian Laidler: Christian showed what he was made of well this year, playing the vital role of half-back. He organised the team well and his game picked up progressively through the year. By the end of the comp he was running all the plays just as intended and cutting down opponents with ease. Great work Christian.

Ryan Donovan: Donny was one of the larger players in the side, cocky fellow, and rightfully so. He is more than comfortable throwing the ball around and running straight over the top of opponents. Overpowering in defense, Donny loves taking on the opposition head on. Good boot too. A well rounded player that could play in any position.

Josh Fuller: Josh lacked in size but made up for in energy. Not afraid to put his body on the line Josh coming up from the 4s also showed zero fear all year, decent service from dummy half and some quick footwork around the edges. A good, positive player in the team. Thanks Josh.

Noah Iverach: In a league of his own; the assassinator, who caused many an injury to the opponent throughout the year with his finesse and strength in his tackles…one had to be stretchered off I believe. Not too bad at running straight through the opposition and scoring tries with ease either. Noah makes footy look like a walk in the park.

William Macdonald: Coming up from the 4s William took a while to settle into his new team. A strong, hard runner who slowly gained more and more confidence in himself through the year (and some palm too). Vast improvement since the beginning of the season, William has done well.

Jack Titmuss: Kamikaze man, who prefers to tackle with his head rather than his shoulder, Jack was somewhat of a giant killer and thrived on targeting the biggest opponent and going for a head on collision, generally taking himself out of the equation as well as the poor kid on the receiving end. Good strong running onto the inside ball, Jack had some great games.

JD McCullock: Watch out for that sniper JD. JD was a steady asset to the team, both in attack and defence, holding his own quite well. It took a bit of belief in himself and the eradication of the words ‘I can’t’ for JD to realise he was a great runner and that not many want to be standing in his way when he gets going. Top stuff JD.

COACH’S REPORT

We had an incredible year and I’d like to congratulate the boys, David, Adam and the parents. We made it to the Grand Final in our first year! At the beginning of the year I thought we’d be lucky if we won a couple of games due to only starting with 10 players - including 7 rookies. We eventually got to 12 players (lost Blake due to injury) and a big thanks to the U9-3s especially Jordan (and his parents) who played 10 of the total 17 games. After winning the first few games the boys were developing quickly and I could see all the boys had individual abilities and talents. If one player was a bit quiet someone else would stand tall (we were playing as a team).

We knew St John’s was always going to be the team to beat and before our first meeting we were both undefeated. We won that game, they got us in the next, and we got them in the major semi. Unfortunately they got us in the grand final, but nothing went our way on the day (that’s footy). The boys showed they are true sportsmen and I am very proud that they have developed into a great team. I hope you all come back next year and develop your skills further as you all have incredible potential.

My sincerest thanks to the following people: To our manager, David, for your energy, enthusiasm and exceptional organisational and communication skills; to our trainer, Adam, for his tireless hard work and commitment; to the dads who helped out on the cold winter nights; to Scott, Anthony and Steele from the U12s who helped out at training and acted as mentors; and lastly to

36 my wife, Sue for her support and patience and for tirelessly collecting my game plans and strategies from all over the house and filing them where she thought appropriate.

MANAGER’S REPORT

Our 2010 season for the boys and everyone involved with the team turned out to be very consistent and rewarding from start to finish. Not only did we end up making the grand final with a majority of first time players and team officials, but we were also rewarded by the boys, especially the new and inexperienced players, continually improving and learning more about the game we all love to play and watch week in and week out.

Our success and philosophy throughout the year was a simple one in teaching the boys the basics of the game. Combined with including and creating that important feeling of being part of a successful team and more importantly, how teamwork is achieved right across the board. This resulting in all the boys turning up for training and the games each week and leading to great parent involvement, especially as mentors.

I would like to give a special mention of thanks and gratitude to the following people who not only worked hard for the boys, but were also part of the reason the side had such a successful year full of reward and enjoyment.

To our Super Coach Bryan Hannigan, who I might say has a bit of a natural flare when it comes to coaching football teams, you did a marvellous job in getting the boys to achieve what they did. Your patience, commitment, time and effort towards the boys was legendary and to have had the opportunity to have worked alongside yourself was not only a wonderful experience, but one I am extremely grateful for as well.

To our Trainer Adam Linnegar, who is also a bit of a quite achiever, I am also extremely grateful to have had the likes of yourself as part of the team. Your commitment and success in preparing the boys each week was second to none. I honestly believe a Trainer’s job and responsibility can often be one of the hardest and least rewarding jobs in Rugby League.

I would also like to make a special mention of thanks to Paul Ellison who had been with the team previously as Manager. Your years of experience and wealth of knowledge about the game is priceless. I have also been a big believer in life that when you go to the right person you get the right answers.

Last but not least, I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents for their commitment towards the boys. From willingly completing Scorekeeper and Touch Judge responsibilities, Canteen, BBQ and fund raising requirements to ensuring the boys attended training and games well prepared and on time. Lastly a very special thank you to the St Christopher’s Club, the Committee Members, Ground and League Officials, 1st Aiders, Volunteers and Sponsors.

Finally to all the boys, ‘today’s little boys, tomorrows little champions.’ Your commitment, dedication and success throughout the year were absolutely inspiring and we were all so proud of what you achieved. Please always remember that you will always be successful in life whether it is on the football field or whether it’s on your own personal journey. You are a great bunch of boys and good luck in the future.

PLAYER PROFILES

Ryan Dunn: Ryan came over from soccer and played in the fullback position throughout the year with a very strong boot to match. Though there was not much of him in size compared to the other

37 boys, his ability to cut down the opposition in defence and split them wide open in attack was very impressive. Ryan had a very good year and improved with every game, gaining in experience and his ability to read the game.

Cooper Ellison: Cooper has been with the Club for a number of years and his experience and ability to play and read the game stood out in attack and defence. Cooper played dummy half and set the attacking play by allowing the side to move forward. When he was not setting tries up for the team he was scoring them himself. Cooper understood the importance of his position and always made sure that he went into the dummy half role without fail and as a result enjoyed a very consistent year of Rugby League.

Byron Foster: Byron was another boy who came over from the soccer fields and was assigned the play maker’s role. Byron handled his job very well and with his good hands and kicking abilities was able to create some very clever plays, especially on our last tackle options. Byron suited the play maker’s role particularly when he was under pressure; the harder the game the better he performed.

Joshua Hannigan: Little Josh was a pleasure to watch. Not only did he perform each week in attack and defence, his never give up attitude and ‘will to win’ were instrumental in allowing the side to improve each week. Josh played in a type of half back / five eight position role and was always there covering from one side of the ground to the other. Whether it was attacking the opposition with the ball in his hands or having to defend, it often involved consecutive sets and plays.

Jayden Hayer: Jayden had a very good first year of Rugby League. His solid runs in attack and good ball control allowed him to gain several valuable metres whenever he attacked with the ball. Jayden’s defence was also rock hard throughout the season and he continued to show the team each week that when he puts his mind to it he is very capable at playing the game.

Aaron Karnold: Aaron unfortunately missed a lot of the first part of the year due to a foot injury, yet when he was cleared to play footy again he made up for lost time. Aaron is a very exciting player to watch. Some of his try scoring feats were first class and he scored more than one try in the same match on more than one occasion. Aaron has a lot of natural ability and when allowed to perform to his natural ability he destroys the opposition in attack.

Blake Linnegar: Ex-soccer player Blake unfortunately missed the back half of the season due to fracturing his ankle (non Rugby League related). Blake started the season off extremely well and could be relied upon to do his job in attack and defence and subsequently never let his team mates or the side down. Blake played extremely well in all his games and the team missed his services towards the back half of the year. Blake’s 100% commitment and strong will to win will be remembered.

Kye Muscat: Kye enjoyed his first year of football and was positioned on the wing/centre throughout the season. His ability to score some very good tries and make several darting runs was something he trained hard at and added value to the team’s performance. As Kye learned more about the game and gained more confidence he was able to time his play and inject himself into the game when required and was crucial in helping the team complete its “game plan and attacking sets”.

James McKenna: James had a very successful and strong year in the forward pack. His ability to wind himself up on his block-busting runs allowed him to improve on his attack each week and showed the opposition what a force he was to be reckoned with. James also worked hard in defence throughout the year resulting in some very well earned and deserved Man of the Match awards. James was also very reliable with the boot and kicked some top conversions as well.

38 Karim Saboune: Karim had a top season and there is no doubt about that. His rock solid defence and hard running style in attack set the standard for every game he played in and inspired his fellow team mates each week. Karim was able to apply himself whether at training or in a game which allowed him to improve and learn even more about the game each week. I recall asking him one day what he would like to be when he grows up and his response was to be a first grade footballer. I do not see any reason why Karim could not achieve his dream.

Joel Williams: Big Joel was not only a credit to the team, but also to himself. Joel managed to become more involved and part of the team as the season progressed. Joel was able to show the ability he had to offer his team mates and worked hard all year producing those damaging “never take a backward step runs”, even more so in the games that counted the most. The more games Joel played the more he got involved and the more damage he did to the opposition.

Mohamad Arnaout: Mohamad joined the Club half way through the season and settled into the side very nicely. He was positioned on the other wing and when he learnt the team’s game plan and attacking sets he was able to inject himself into the game resulting in scoring some terrific individual tries. Mohamad also knew when to assist in defence and was not afraid to get in there and help his team mates bring some much larger opposition players to the ground. Mohamad always did what was asked of him in both attack and defence.

MANAGER’S REPORT

After a tough year in 2009, this year was to be about rebuilding the confidence of the players as well as the parents. With a change in coaching staff the task was left to our new coach Glen Bradford to take the boys back to basics and to get them to enjoy their footy again. It was clear from the start of the season it wasn’t about winning the premiership this year, but to get a good squad back on the field and to build a side that not only had some skill, but that wanted to play together as a team.

The team has plenty of stars in the making, but that was to be the problem that plagued them from the start of the season. They were individually good, but not so good as a unit. As the season progressed we could see the boys really starting to enjoy their training together and to form a bond which then reflected on the field, coming up with some great plays. Their confidence lifted and their trust in one another started to show with the boys scoring some awesome tries and backing each other up like a real team should. We were given praises from several game referees, impressed with the level of skill they had and even complimenting one try as one of the best tries he had ever seen scored in the Mod competition. Good job boys!

Even through the tough stages every boy put their heart and soul into each game. They all showed up for training each week eager to better their skill and fitness, and willing to take the flack after their defeats. We have endured a long but satisfying season and they now have a lot of confidence going into next year. They are a great group of kids which we are all very proud of and we are really excited to see what next season brings. 40

I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who have helped out with various duties during the year. Without you there would be no football team and this Club would not be the best club in the district. Thank you for all your support and the cheers and chants from the sideline - it has made the season really exciting and enjoyable. Thank you to Glen Bradford (coach) and Sean Khoury (trainer) whom have devoted endless hours of voluntary time to help develop the boys and to give them the skills to play the game that we all love. We have all formed such great friendships and I look forward to next season. If the second half of the season is anything to go by, next year is going to be awesome. Go the mighty Saints!

PLAYER PROFILES

Bodie Bradford: The little general with a smart right boot. Directed the team around well and looked relaxed with the number 7 on his back.

Michael Fahd: With a strong palm and heaps of pace, he scores tries all over the place. The master of deception is our number 4, with a fro that makes the crowd roar.

Peter Rehayem: Sneaky Pete the number 9 who must be watched close to the line. If the defence is asleep, it’s try time.

Jaidin Obeid: Small in stature but full of heart, pound for pound he is the toughest going round. Very fleet footed with all the tricks he is our number 6.

Stuart Higham: Big and strong always ready to bring it on. If the boys back him up, in and around the ruck, it will bring them luck. With a big Stu offload points are always on offer.

Jayden Gouganovski: The coach’s ‘go – to – man’ who can play anywhere from 7 to 6, fullback and 9. It doesn’t matter what I ask Jayden is always up to the task.

Jayden Khoury: Hard bustling running forward, valued member of the pack. He always leads from the front wearing number 10 and has a mean right fend.

Lachlan Barbagallo: A powerful hard running centre, the rookie with all the skill, who really knew how to give the crowd a thrill.

Ryan McGregor: Possesses a super right foot step. He loves playing at the back, and look out opposition ‘cause he loves running through the pack.

Bradley Kilpatrick: Mr Versatile can play anywhere, but was most at home in the second row. Can read the game well and has a great offload. With a bit of a dry spell it was great to see him scoring well.

Angelo Gauci: One of our hard hitting second row, always ready to go go go. He runs the ball up so hard, his legs always pumping, often catching the opposition off guard.

Shaun Bailey: On our wing and ready to sing “When the saints go marching in”, he is our number 2. He loves the game and is always on the spot when points are to be scored under the black dot.

COACH’S REPORT

A learning season! A season which promised so much in the pre-season, delivered very little in the first half of the season proper BUT ended with the team very disappointed to just miss out on the finals, finding some much needed end of season form.

Credit must go to the team who with the addition of new players to the Club and players learning to play in different positions and others given different roles and responsibilities, the team was taken back a few steps to get the basics right in order to get the entire team headed in the right direction. To the boys’ credit and with a lot of hard work they started to show some results. The skill level of this team is as good as any in the competition, but knowing when and where to use these skills is what we needed to work on together as a team. We saw the results of this in the last 5 or 6 weeks of the season with players putting themselves into positions on the field where they were asking questions of the opposing teams and having the confidence to do it for the team in attack and more so in defence. These little efforts are what we in the team call the “1 percenters” and are the base that footy teams are built on. This team is well on the way to laying that platform, putting them in good shape for the years to come.

42

To the coaching staff a big thank you to Tim Reardon, Paul Griffith and Jason Nagle whose help and guidance of the boys (and the Coach) at training and on game day is very much appreciated and hopefully we can continue to work together in the development of the team - ‘Thanks Boys’.

Lastly to the boys - I asked before every game that you ‘go onto the field and do your best and regardless of the result you will always be a winner’ and to your credit I think you did that. I hope you all had a good season and come back next year to pick up where we finished. It’s been a pleasure being part of this team.

PLAYER PROFILE

Luke Reardon: Luke had a superb year, starting the season at fullback Luke was moved into the role of 2nd receiver. After a short settling in period he soon realized that he would have the ball in his hands a lot more and with this Luke’s confidence soared and as a result so did the team’s. A player who has the ability to play before the line and is learning to play at and through it which is an enormous task for someone his age. A good reader of the game and a very solid defender. A player to watch in years to come.

Rhys Harrington: Rhys had a very good season in which he was given the task of organizing our ‘GROUP 1” in attack, a role he took great pride in. Rhys was always organizing his runners into position and more often than not smashing one up himself to get the team headed in the right direction. A superb defender anywhere on the field, but often found on the edges of the ruck. A knee injury threatened to cut short his season, but with fierce passion and a ‘do it for the team’ attitude Rhys went into the last game of the season and produced one of his and the team’s toughest and best games.

Riley Nagle: A good solid season from Riley which saw him take ownership of the wing position. The difference this season was that instead of just going out there and just filling a position Riley held his width well in attack and defence and was often seen screaming down the sideline on the end of some great long passes which led to some good tries or had the team in good position on the field. He was also very vocal this year and often heard barking orders at his inside defenders. Confidence is a great thing in footy !!!!

Liam Mannering: Liam had a steady season and was one of the teams (group 2) runners which meant that he was required to get a little wider in attack. A hard running back rower type player Liam formed a good combination with his receivers and has the ability to play either long or short, communicates well in defence and was often putting big hits on to wrap the ball up quickly.

Adam Griffith: ‘BOB’ as expected had a great year after his most improved award last year. Adam continued to impress with his dummy half skills and is becoming a very solid defender in the middle of the ruck, often bringing down much bigger opponents. A player who will always improve because of his positive attitude towards training and playing. Well done mate (and the only member of the team to conquer the “Cross Bar Challenge”.

Lachlan Honey: A player small in stature but big in attitude, Lachlan had a great season. ‘Lockie’ was asked to work hard on his passing and running game and if we were talking about the old Lachlan he might just have THOUGHT about doing it. But the new improved version obviously decided to knuckle down and work hard and didn’t it pay off. With his confidence sky high (and the new ‘can do’ attitude) Lachlan set about becoming a very sound dummy half, quick off the mark around the ruck and a solid passing game that allowed him to control his runners and take some pressure off his receivers. Also working hard on his defence, keep up the hard work mate!

43 Kieran Armson-Graham: Kieran had a solid season, one that started a bit scratchy due to the added pressure of playing in the 1st receiver’s role. But with some more room to move when shifted into our Group 2 in attack, Kieran’s confidence skyrocketed and he showed what a damaging runner of the footy he can be. With this new found ‘spark’ Kieran’s defence also picked up to the standard we all know he is capable of shining through. A player with good skills and a great passion for the game.

Andrew Craven: Andrew’s season was very much like that of the team’s where he had to go back to basics to build up his confidence. This resulted in Andrew changing position to the role of decoy runner which worked very well for the team and Andrew getting a couple of opportunist tries from dummy half. As with all boys of this age, Andrew will need to work on his defence and tackling technique as the opposition will only be bigger and meaner next year - all in all Andrew, a much improved season.

Nathan Boland: Nathan had a big season. He settled into his role in group 1 rather quickly and from that moment took it upon himself to take the team forward with many powerful hit ups early in the tackle count. Nathan’s defence also returned (from wherever it was hiding) and the edge of the ruck was no place for opposing teams to run. A player who runs great lines whether it be under or over and is always looking to improve his all round game. Well done mate.

Anthony Maric: ‘Antos’ welcome to rugby league. Anthony played his first season with the attitude, desire and passion that you wish every player in the game had. A young man who not only had to fit his way into a new team, but learn a new game. To his credit he did it very easily and with little or no fuss. Thrown onto the wing early in the season it didn’t take long for Antos to show he has got a heap of talent and as a result was moved into group 1 - a move which paid off straight away with Anthony loving the hard stuff in attack and defence. A player with plenty of potential who will continue to excel due to his positive attitude and a very important member of this team’s future.

Julian Walker: Julian had a good season and became a very hard working member of the team. Another confidence player whose attitude changed this season and was often moved between groups 1 and 2, a role he looked to enjoy. Julian kept his position well and was very solid in defence with his Martial Arts training certainly helping there, a good talker and a real good team player.

Hayden Kennedy: Hayden had a solid season and became a very popular member of the team. A player with all the skills needed to progress in the game and when his confidence was up, so was the team’s. Hayden was given the job of taking the early balls in group 1 and setting the platform for the team in attack, a solid defender when switched on. A player with a passion for the game he will become a vital member of this team in the future.

Jeremy El-Chami: Jeremy returned to the team after a year away and picked up where he left off. A strong runner of the ball and a fierce defender, these skills will see him continue to improve in this game. The harder it is the better Jeremy goes and it was a shame that his season was cut short by a holiday. Hopefully next season Jeremy will return so the team can benefit from such a hard working player.

Jack Ryan: A great year was had by Jack who this year had the added responsibility of being the Team Captain, a role he thrived on. A player with a ‘do as I do not as I say’ attitude he guided the team around the field and throughout the season very well. Jack works very hard on his own game, but his efforts don’t stop there. He was always seen helping team mates out whatever the situation. A born leader, it has been a pleasure to be involved in his development and hope that we can continue to work together in the years to come.

COACH’S REPORT

Well another footy season down and what a year the team had. This year was a bit of a learning curve for the boys and a bit of ‘trial and error’ for myself. With the addition of some new players and the loss of some old players, it was time for a bit of chop and changing of positions to see what fitted.

The team kept their spirits and enthusiasm high throughout the season and could play some well- disciplined and strong defensive footy at times, but just lacked the ability to finish. On many occasions the boys had built a lead in a game, but were unlucky not to hold out against some of the top teams of the competition. There were some great displays of team efforts throughout the year with the boys putting in 100 percent week in, week out. Although the final results of the year may not have displayed it, the boys should be proud of the effort they put in throughout the year and hopefully want to come back again next year and give it another crack.

But it’s not all about the effort on the field. I would personally like to thank the parents for just being there and supporting each week, and for bringing the boys down to training and to games. Also, just the suggestion that the boys were playing up and the Dads would be onto them – haha! It makes my job a whole lot easier when you know that you have the parent’s support and confidence. Also to those who helped out as timekeeper, ran the sidelines and also helped in the canteen it is much appreciated. I would also like to thank the U11s who played up during the year

45 and helped out when needed. Great work boys! Finally I would like to thank Josh, Mick Massih and Linda Dravet for their help throughout the year. Linda especially made my job easier by making sure that everything was under control and did a great job as manager.

MANAGER’S REPORT

Being my first year as manager, I can say that I have really enjoyed this season. I couldn’t have done it without the support from all the parents each week. Your help with BBQ, Canteen, Linesman, Timekeeping, Pub Raffles, and just getting the boys to the games on time has made my job so much easier. Thanks to everyone for being so supportive and always willing to help. Thanks to all our ball boys/girls too!!!

Coach Poppy!!! Thank you so much for all the time you put in, and the dedication you showed to our boys. You were there at training and games each week, without fail. The boys have enjoyed being coached by you, and have learnt a lot. You have been a great role model for them. This is the second season in a row that you have generously given up your time to coach our boys. We all hope to look forward to another season with you next year. Thanks heaps!

Our trainers - Mick and Josh!! Thank you both so much for your help supporting Poppy with the boys. Your time and efforts have been appreciated by all. You’ll have to let me know what’s in that magic water. It works wonders with the boys. Can it be used to make them clean their rooms too??

The boys!!!! What a great bunch of guys you all are!!! It has been a pleasure to manage your team this season. You have all been so co-operative and fun to be with. Getting to know all your ‘Individual’ personalities a little bit better this year has made my job all the more enjoyable. I hope to see you all back next year.

Finally, I just want to say that St Christopher’s Junior Rugby League Football Club is a great club to be associated with. Being a manager this season has allowed me to see what goes on behind the scenes to make this Club what it is today. Thanks to all the (past and present) Committee Members, Major Sponsors, First Aid Officers and all the other Volunteers (who have made things happen for our kids). Your efforts are unbelievable!!! Thanks also to the families of the committee members for giving them support all year (years). A special thanks to Jane for always being there to make sure the canteen is running smoothly. I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone.

One last thank you to the U11s who helped us out at the beginning of the season when our numbers were down - a great display of ‘Club Spirit’.

PLAYER PROFILES

Tahn Smith: Tahn was one of the new additions to the team and what a difference he made. Tahn can kick goals, score tries and save them as well. He puts his body on the line for the team each week. A great year at fullback and he will only improve in the years to come.

Matthew Massih: This was Matt’s first year of football and he started out playing on the wing, but soon showed that he could handle himself in the middle of the park. Matt showed that he wasn’t afraid to get in there and have a go and with a little more self confidence will improve out of sight.

Paul Kitiona: ‘Kitkat’ had another solid year in the back line and held our defence together out wide. A lethal attacking player, when in space you won’t catch KITKAT. Paul just needs to have a bit more belief in his strength in defence and he will go a long way in the future. 46

Sean Faanoi: Sean played in the forwards again this year. Sean only played a handful of games this year due to injury. But when he turned up, he turned up to play. Sean is a solid defender and when he runs straight and hard, he is a force to be reckoned with.

Brandon Cushway: ‘Cush’ had another good year in the back line. Cush only played a handful of games this year also due to injury. Cush has improved since last year and has developed some self-confidence in his own abilities and showed this on the park.

Mitchell Wilson: ‘Sniggs’ played 5/8 again this year and led by example. With intense defence and good vision when attacking Sniggs proved a handful for any opposition. Always turns up to training and the game ready and willing to do his best for the team.

Tommy Ward: Tommy got moved from hooker to half back this year and he showed that he could handle himself. Tommy showed some great individual ball skills with his good short kicking game and vision. With some more confidence in his abilities he will improve out of sight.

Tui Manoa: ‘Tepapa’ had another great year in the forwards and led from the front. With his strong runs and rock solid defence Tui was a great asset to the team. Always turns up with his mind on the job and knows what needs to be done.

Christian Patti: Christian played in the middle at hooker for the majority of the year. His constant talk in defence and enthusiasm brought the team up every time. He was then moved into the back line were his attacking abilities excelled.

Benjamin Titmuss: ‘Titty’ has improved out of site since last year and was a vital member of the forward pack. With hard runs and even tougher defence Ben showed the opposition he was not to be messed with. I can only see further improvement in the future.

Jarrad Bryant: ‘Jazza’ had a great year this year and earned his starting position in the forwards. He never took a step back against any opposition in attack and his enthusiasm in defence was excellent. He also has improved out of sight since last year and will only improve further.

Anthony Harb: ‘Hus’ was the captain of the team this year and he led the team with everything he had. Hus is a strong attacker who can offload the ball when necessary but has the pace to break the line and go himself. A constant hard worker and a good all round player.

Brendon Dravet: ‘Dravo’ was moved from fullback to lock this year and he took to the position like a fish in water. A great defence who cuts down people twice his size and always puts his body on the line for the team. Was a real leader this year and was always enthusiastic.

Brendan Lam Sam: ‘Rambo’ played in between the back line and the forwards this year. Rambo displayed enthusiasm in defence all year and when he ran straight and hard was a great attacking player. Really came into his own towards the end of the season and improved out of sight.

Dion Compton: Dion was a new addition to the team this year and was a vital attacking weapon in the forwards. Dion’s enthusiasm in defence and attack make him one tough customer. Runs straight and hard each time and will give his all for the team and his mates.

Peter Tabua: ‘Impact’ is a strong and powerful runner and caused many a problem for the opposition. When he runs straight and hard Peter would leave the opposition with holes everywhere. Needs to put a bit more effort in for defence and he will continue to improve.

Abdul Arnaout: Abdul joined the team about half way through the year and he fit straight in. With his enthusiasm in defence and his fearless runs in attack Abdul showed that he was Saints’ material. With a bit more experience and confidence Abdul will continue to improve. 47 UNDER 12 DIVISION 1 - FINALISTS

COACH’S REPORT

Our goal for the season was to avenge our grand final loss of last year and we were confident after our trials that we had a strong blend of old and new faces that would be more than capable of achieving the task ahead.

Unfortunately for us it wasn’t to be with some poor early season form combined with some major upset losses early in the year. The boys never really showed the true potential that we know the team has. We never seemed to be able to find our rhythm. During the year we did manage to string together some good football and look like a team that knew what to do. But weather and untimely byes contributed to our downfall and as a result we slipped down to 3rd on the ladder and that is why we didn’t progress after we drew with St Johns in the final.

Although we were bundled out a little earlier than expected I am still confident that the year was a successful one and we can be proud of our efforts. Every player showed improvement in their own skills as well as our team work.

This is my last year coaching and I would like to thank a few people. Dad, my manager, Al, Matt and Nathan (Sello) for their help with first aid and training, the parents for your support and lastly the boys - thanks for making me laugh, cry, angry and happy. Good luck with your lives ahead. 48

PLAYER PROFILES

Adam Ayshan: Full Back. Another good year from Adam at the back of the defence line. A very solid kick return game saw Adam make plenty of yards for the team. Needs to talk more behind the line.

Steele Brown: Halfback. Again one of our most consistent team players. Always in the action organizing our attack and terrorizing the opposition with strong defence. Needs to realize that he is not a front rower.

Brandon Donovan: Played Half, Hooker and Wing this year and always gave his best for the team. Not big in size, but a big heart saw him always put his body on the line. A solid little player.

Joshua Barbagallo: Wing. A good player who needs to believe in his own ability. Always gave his best and when in open spaces is very hard to chase down. Needs only to improve his handling to become a better player.

Luke Parmaxidis: Wing. New to the team this year Luke has speed to burn and given room to move is very hard to catch. With work on his passing and handling I’m sure he can become a very good player in the future. A good tackler.

Scott Hannigan: Centre. Up from reserve grade this year and fitted in with the team nicely. Very strong in defence with some bone jarring defence and also very fast in attack. Needs to get more involved in games and go looking for the ball.

Joshua Thompson-Reynolds: Another good year from a player who always gives his best in any position he plays. Not many players can get past him in defence and always willing to do the hard yards.

Aseri Raikalevu: Made a late switch to hooker this year from wing and made it his own. Good service from dummy half and a great tackling technique are his best assets. Hopefully back next year.

Fatu Togagae: Once again our most destructive forward. Possesses some real raw talent and a great ability to set up his support players with perfect offload. Must work harder on fitness at training to become a really good footballer.

Tom Swiderski: Played all year in the forwards and always gave his best for the team. Made plenty of inroads in attack and was always there in defence. Needs to use his size more and believe in himself.

Devante Faanoi: A big front rower who can be the most damaging runner in the comp. Very strong in defence with some bone crunching tackles. Also needs to work harder with fitness to benefit more.

Travis Marks: New to the team this year. A good player who played hooker for most of the year and provided great service for the team. Missed a few games throughout the year, but he always performed when required.

Posieone Lynch: Another new player this year who fitted in nicely with the boys. A real worker in both attack and defence and was always willing to do the small things right. A fantastic trainer and always gave his best.

49 Damien Rowles: Another good year from Damo who worked tirelessly in attack making plenty of yards. Always willing to get involved and make yards for the team. Needs to work on tackling technique.

Luke Annakin: Switched from forwards to backs on a regular basis and always gave his best this year. Can put on some big tackles at times, but needs to be more consistent with this. A good year.

COACH’S REPORT

It seems a long time ago that we all came together in February to start the season. All year long the boys trained very well, not shirking the fitness training we imposed on them each Wednesday and absorbing the more technical lessons and drills we also did each week. We were lucky to pick up two new players, both of whom along with their families fit our culture well. This year the boys adapted to the new International Rules immediately, having unlimited interchange and not being shackled by the two pass rule allowing the boys to finally put into practice all the skills they had acquired under their previous coach. Combined with a few positional changes it was obvious during the trials that the team was going to be competitive.

In the opening seven rounds, because of an early redraw, we faced the competition’s top sides five times and this is where the steel in the boys was forged. Without thinking or worrying about the draw, they just played footy and toughed it out. By season’s end we had played 18 games, for 15 wins, 2 losses and one draw.

The progress in the boys during the year was gradual, but continual. Not only did their football improve over the course of the season, but they developed a physical and mental toughness that was not matched by any other team in the competition - we played Greenacre, the biggest team in the comp, 5 times and only lost once. I am very pleased to say that each and every boy in the team became a better footballer during the course of the season. 51

There were many highlights this year, many good games to watch. I think the thing that sticks out most in my mind is the mateship displayed this year, by the boys, by the coaching staff and by the parents. It truly was a team effort by all this year. My thanks to all the parents who contributed, who supported their boy, who ran the line, did the time keeping, first aided, helped on the BBQ and in the canteen. It all starts with you.

Lastly, but by no means least, my thanks to Peter, Mick and Tony. I know what we all put in this year, but wasn’t it worth it?

PLAYER PROFILES

Brandan Sua: Capped a mighty season with a man of the match performance in both Grand Finals. His sheer competitiveness combined with his strength made him our most damaging player with and without the ball this year. Playing on the left he terrorised many teams with his bullocking runs. Defensively he saved a lot of tries with his hard and persistent tackling. Congratulations on your best year at the Club and on your selection in the Bulldog’s Development squad.

Adam Sader: The switch to full International Rules this year enabled Adam’s true talent to shine. A pleasure to train and coach he guided the team around the paddock all year, doing more than his share of the defensive work along the way. Adam played team footy all year and worked hard to make the outside backs look good. A hard job, very well done.

Andrew Zoghbi: New to the Club and football this year, Andrew was thrown into the deep end from the start. Footy at this age/level is no place for the meek and to Andrew’s credit he never took a backward step. Thriving on the mateship in the team, Andrew earned his place by putting his body on the line in each game and making very few errors, a hard thing to do in your first year. Well done mate – fancy jagging a Premiership in your first year !!!

Jordan Dabaja: A bone fracture to his wrist stalled a solid start to his season. To his credit he came back after a period off and joined his mates in the run to the semis. Coming off the bench Jordan performed his job well for the team this year against stiff opposition. As a work in progress Jordan’s best football lies ahead of him. Keep training hard your turn will come.

Conor Davidson: As team Captain Davo led from the front, all year. His attack at times really got the backs rolling, but it was his defence and leadership in the tight games where he really stood out. Quite often he snuffed out threatening plays with smothering tackles just when we needed it and it lifted the boys around him. A top Captain’s knock this year mate.

Aidan Harrington: About mid season this year the penny dropped for Aidan. He realised what props are for and went on to deliver his best season so far. Using the team structure, both his offence, but particularly his defence, became the platform for the team in the middle of the field. A job very well done this year mate.

Jack Finch: Being one of our smallest players didn’t stop Jack from competing with the big boys this year. Who will forget him puffing his chest out at the Dragon’s winger who dared pick on one of his mates during our first semi. It usually goes unnoticed but Jack’s service out of dummy half this year was excellent. Our completion rate was very high and it all starts with Jack. Well done mate - thanks for a big effort and filling an important role very well.

Kayne Grove: Playing on our left this year Kayne’s natural ability was very evident. On many occasions he delivered very clever passes to outside support resulting in tries. He sank Dragons with a sublime pass, and in the GF delivered the money ball with 3 minutes to go. His defence

52 was also very solid and he combined it with good game reading to cancel opposition raids down our left. A very good year mate, well done.

Liam Mulvihill: Barked all year long, organised both the defence and attack and still had time to pull off the odd miracle. I’ll personally never forget his individual try in the GF replay where he punished a tiring defence with a terrific 35m run. Also selected this year in the Bulldog’s Development squad Liam just gives his all every time he takes the field. Well done mate, I’m very proud of you.

Nathan Harrison: Harry had a big one this year. Being a prop and facing fellas a lot bigger than you each week is not an easy task. ‘H’ just kept coming all year and improved with each game. With Aidan and Dylan he was part of the backbone of the team that controlled the middle, in what was a very physical environment. Well done mate, top effort.

Toby Reardon: Toby switched to left centre this year, and I honestly don’t recall many tries being scored by any team down his side. His defence was rock solid. A natural footballer, Toby’s skill with the ball in hand and his ability to run a straight line resulted in many fine tries from our left side attack. A great trainer who puts in hard, well done mate.

Jayden Okunbor: Joined us from the Colts this year and had an immediate impact. Not only did we get a lump of a lad, but we got a talker and a motivator who communicated very effectively with his new mates, on and off the field. Also selected in the Bulldog’s squad and winning the ‘International Player of the Year’, Jayden’s results speak for themselves. What they may not convey is what a nice bloke he is as well. Well done mate.

Conor Kelley: Every team needs a finisher, Conor is ours. Not the biggest of boys, but no one can doubt his courage. Combining well on the left with Toby, Conor had a very good year in defence and attack, either saving tries or scoring them by backing up. A pleasure to train (except on sleepover nights) and fun to have around. A good season mate.

Dean Stimpson: A competitive fellow, Dean gives his all when he’s out on the field. A character at training, he really terrorised a lot of teams this year with his hard running, so much so that I reckon a few teams had specific game plans to negate him (play offside). None of them were prepared for his ball stripping though, ha! Congratulations on also being selected for the Bulldogs Development squad. A very solid year, well done mate.

Dylan Elias: Each year you expect at least one player to blossom. This year it was Dylan. Knocked out in the first GF, Dylan backed up 3 days later to go again with his mates at the enemy, putting in a great performance. Over the course of the year Dylan’s game and confidence grew each week (as did his fitness). As a coach it’s just the best thing to see a kid grow like Dylan did over the course of a season. Well done mate on a huge season.

Kyle Lloyd: The team’s top point scorer this year, Kyle can pot them from anywhere. Playing right wing he was part of our lethal right side attack. A fellow with plenty of talent Kyle enjoyed the mateship that existed in the team this season. Gaining in confidence at the back end of this season I’m expecting big things from Kyle next season. Well done mate.

MANAGER’S REPORT

We started pre-season training with about 10 players, but to those boys’ credit, they all turned up for training each day and stayed solid – there was no talk of not forming a side! With the demise of the U14s, we picked up 4 of their players and by season start we had built to 18.

The comp could not have started any worse. Rounds 1 and 2 saw us play the grand finalists from last year – just what you need when you’ve been struggling for numbers! We then had the next 2 weeks off courtesy of Anzac Day and a bye. Round 5 we had a real go against St Johns (who ended up finishing 3rd) and the boys started to believe they could match it with the other sides in the comp. Then it happened. After being down 18 nil at half time against Cheso at Terry Lamb, we fought back to win 22-18. We then came from behind to knock off Greenacre at Roberts. Momentum was building and so was the self belief. Then it rained for 2 weeks! The wash outs cost us a game against the eventual wooden spooners (and a certain 2 points) but we did continue our roll by beating East Hills at Smith (can anyone see a pattern here?) Then it was back to Round 1 again – mercy!

However, the game against Colts, who had mercied us in the first round, was a bit different. We got beat 54-22 (with only the bare 13 players) but the margin was only that big because we didn’t believe we were as good as them. We led at different times and it was only late tries that blew the 55

score way out. At this stage we still had a chance at snaring 5th spot and with a better commitment to training, we were all starting to believe we could do it.

Eventually, it all came down to the game against Cheso. We had 13, they had 18. We led for 59 minutes and 59 seconds of this match (the last 10 minutes with 12 men) to see them score under the posts on the bell – our run for 5th was finished. We re-grouped to smash Heights in our last game at home and this was a good way for the boys to finish their season. This was a tough year but we made it in the end.

Many thanks to our coaching staff – Macca, Garves and Cookie. These guys were a perfect combination for this age group and I know the boys really appreciated your efforts. This side has an excellent core group and only needs a couple more decent, committed club players to be a real strength in future comps – hopefully we can snare those bodies in the off season. See you all next year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Duane Gordon: DJ was a new player to the team who slotted in mainly at fullback but could cover any position in the backline. DJ is always looking to involve himself during the game and possesses a lot of pace which led to him scoring some top tries.

Jordan Slieman: Jordan was another new recruit this year. He had an uncanny ability of knowing how to finish off a try and while he was playing at the back he had a safe pair of hands which kept us out of danger many times.

Marika Raikalevu: Marika is a stalwart to the team who covered the wing position. In certain games this year Marika really showed what he could do when he got revved up and with more confidence he could create some havoc more consistently.

Kieran Eisenhuth: Kieran returned to the team this year after a couple of years in tight pants (AFL) and really hit the ground running. Kieran slotted into the centres and while being a handful in attack, he was also very solid in defence. His kicking for touch was also a feature with Keiran always trying to give the other team a chance to get the ball before it went out.

Jake Craven: Jake mainly played out wide and was a very strong defender. He had unassuming speed and just about always managed to break the first tackle. His dummy half running was also a feature making ground most of the time.

Henry Waqatairewa: Henry was a new player to the team and had to cover a number of positions. Henry always gave his best and was a handful to bring down. As the season went on and Henry got to more training, his game improved and he became very valuable in the centres.

Robbie Smith: In Robbie’s first year with the team he really showed the goods. He has the ability to read the game and bob up at the right time to get the attack going. Rob was also fearless in defence bringing down much bigger players.

Nathan Henderson: Unfortunately Hendo missed a lot of the early part of the season with injury. When back it was evident how much we missed him as he has a top kicking game, organises the backline and is also prepared to take the line on. Nath was just starting to hit his straps as the season finished.

Ben Samuel: After training the early part of the year with us Ben got the call up 4 games in and proved very handy for the team. Ben did a great job getting the team around the park and he

56

showed glimpses of his running game as the year went on and with more confidence just needs to do it more.

Tom Grealy: Tom was our captain and leader on the field and while always being strong in defence, his running game got better each game. He managed to do both the hard stuff up the middle and also create opportunities out wide with some strong charges.

Mahde Kheir: Mahde this year covered a number of positions, but was most at home at the back of the scrum. Mahde is one of those players who goes unnoticed while he racks up the tackles and eats up the metres without any fuss.

Ali Bahsoun: Ali had a strong year doing a good job in the middle and was a tough defender. All we need to do is find the switch to fire Ali up because then he really would became a headache to the opposition

Paul Mansour: This year Paul was one of our most consistent performers. He always made sure he got to training and in the game was willing to roll up the sleeves and do the hard work, sometimes taking two hit ups in a set.

Vinnacchi Taimaseve: When VJ got back for a hit up he really ran hard onto the ball. He gave 100% each time and sometimes it was his enthusiasm that got the better of him, forcing mistakes, but with more hard work that will easily improve.

Trevor Faanoi: Trev was one of the guys that everyone looked up to on the field. It was no coincidence that when we were making a comeback in a game it was normally off the back of one of Trev’s charges and offloads.

Jake Jennings: Jake gave away a bit of size in the middle, but never wanted to take a backward step. Jake gave good service out of dummy half and was always willing when playing second row. Unfortunately a serious injury cut Jake’s season short.

Kirk Oustambasidis: Kirk was a tireless worker in the middle, his defence was first class and was a good talker in the middle. Kirk was solid from dummy half and he had the ability to know when to run at the right time.

Beau Mitrothanasis: Beau trained hard at the start of the year, but unfortunately pulled out early.

COACH’S REPORT

Runners up! To some, the title of 2nd place means nothing. To some, it’s as good as getting the wooden spoon, but if you know the history of the 2010 Saints U17s and where they have come from, the title of runner-up is an absolutely outstanding achievement. Sure the boys were devastated after the grand final and rightly so. I’ll admit I shed a tear with them, but I looked at every one of the 20 players that stood before me and told them to hold their head up high because they should be proud of the season passed.

This team has not played in a semi final since they were in U11s, yet they continued to turn up week in, week out, even at times when 40 points were getting put on them and only having 6 or 7 at training. This is the type of team that wins comps. They go through tough times together and they come out stronger together. After only a few rounds this year, the boys were proud to call not only each other, but myself, Jimmy, Walshy, Stumpy and Killer, their brothers. Family!

The brotherly feeling amongst this team I believe is our biggest strength. A few games that I’d like to mention this season are our efforts against Dragons at Neptune, to start with 13 and finish with 12 against a solid Dragons outfit and come out winners 16-12, will stick in my mind for a 58 long time. Our game against Sporties, the eventual premiers where we won 42-12, shows how close this comp was. We can beat anyone if we stay focussed. And finally our semi against Dragons. After some early nerves and being down 4-0 after 2 minutes, the boys turned up the heat in defence and scored 30 unanswered points to take us through to the grand final. With 2 minutes to go and Dragons attacking our line, we were still desperate to stop them scoring despite us having already won.

To continue on the subject of defence, over the past 3 years I have told these boys week in, week out that defence wins games. To give you an idea of how much the team has matured and started to listen to such advice, here is our average points scored ‘for and against’ this season compared to last season.

2009 2010 Average points scored ‘For’ 18.77 19.38 Average points scored ‘Against’ 21.23 14.13

The above statistics again refer back to the brotherly feeling in this team. To only have just over 14 points scored against us each game show how hard these boys worked for each other.

To finish I would like to thank the coaching staff. Jimmy - who taught me so much in my first year as a coach; Killer - the manager of all managers; Walshy and Stumpy - two great trainers who the boys all knew not to mess with. These guys were outstanding to have next to me at training and game day.

To the players, I can’t thank you enough for such a year. In all my life as a player, trainer and coach, this is the year that I am most proud of and I can truly say it was worth every minute. I hope you will all be back next year to win this thing because there is no way in hell I’m gonna miss it.

I’d also like to give a special mention to Tommy Grealy. When we were in need due to injury he put his hand up and played not only one, but two years up. Full credit to you mate, well done.

Finally to the Club. To have such a big show of support turn up on grand final day and at various games during the season is a credit to how this Club operates. I played all my career at St. Christophers (apart from a short leave of absence and forced early retirement) so it is an absolute honour to be given the chance to give something back as a coach.

RUNNERS UP! A positive and motivation for season 2011. And REMEMBER - DEFENCE WINS GAMES!

PLAYER PROFILES

Adam Darwich: After a few years floating from wing to fullback and a few other places in between, Adam started pre-season this year and after only a few weeks, we knew who would be wearing the number 6. He is a great trainer, an even better kid and he should be proud of season 2010. See you next year to win it Ads.

Daniel Stone: Stoney was unlucky enough to only play 2 games for us this year, with 2 broken collar bones within a matter of weeks. I really felt for him as this injury is a pain I know too well. Stoney’s direction on the field was sorely missed but his commitment to training and attitude overall is something to be proud of. See you back next year to go a step further mate.

Jarrod Simpson: Simmo was our starting hooker this year. What a year he had. Simmo tackled everything that moved this year and I mean everything. Solid defence is one of the best qualities a

59 player can have - he not only has that, but has a great attitude and love of the game. We need you back next year to win it Simmo.

Trent Colquhoun: At the beginning of the year I told Trent and Simmo they would be battling for a starting spot at hooker. As it turned out, an injury to Stoney left me with the option to have Trent on the field full time at half. Not his preferred position, but if I put the number 10 on Trent’s back he would play there because he would do anything to help the team. His defence is second to none. Love it Trent, see you next year.

Matt Thornton: Matty, what can I say? You turn up to training, train hard, no complaints, turn up to game day (sometimes without all your gear i.e. shorts) and put your body on the line for the team. Another one of the smaller boys in the team, but defends like a back rower. Not many got past your wing this year mate. Well done. See you next year.

Morris Higham: Moose played just about every minute of every game this year, and deserved it. Occasionally I had to pull him up at training, but not often I asked him twice. He loves the team and works hard at training and on game day. Definitely glad to have Moose in this team as are the boys. Next year is our year mate.

Wilson Faanoi: Wilson is playing his 3rd year at the club, but acts like he has played here since U6s. Has got amazing talent and should be a name to look out for in the future. He loves this team like his family and lead us well at training and on game day. I dare say we might not see much of him next year with selection in the U20s squad beckoning. Well done mate.

Mark Harb: Harby what did u eat in the off season? The first time I saw you at pre-season I thought you were from A-Grade! With your HSC this year it was hard for you to fully commit to footy, but every chance you got you showed so much potential. You run and tackle hard and have a very competitive nature. Hope to see you next year mate.

Andrew Warner: Wasn’t going to play at the start of the year, but just before the start of the season came and asked me if he could join. Last year I told Andrew to pick his attitude up a little and this year he absolutely blew me away. His talk and positive attitude helped the team and it showed with his footy. Massive improvement! Next year is our year mate.

David Minute: After years of rumours that Minute was joining our Club, 2010 was the season. From the very first training session he fit straight in and brought a great attitude with him. A very damaging footballer with a big future. I can’t wait for next year mate. We are going all the way.

Josh Rainbow: After last year’s performance from Poss I thought I had seen all that he could do. How wrong could I be? He spent most of the season in the centres, but a rough trot with team injuries meant I needed a fullback and Poss put his hand up straight away. What a move that turned out to be! Another name to look out for in the future. See you next year mate to go a step further.

Dwayne Brown: Georgie has been playing a year up with this team since the beginning of 2009. He is one of those players with that natural athletic ability and I’m sure he would excel in any sport. In rugby league, he is outstanding. If he works hard enough he has a bright future in the game. See you next year Georgie.

Jeremy Fuller: Dools is another of our younger players and is the proud founder of a group called S.F.A - The Smallest Forwards in Australia. Probably the hardest working 16 year old I have ever seen on a football field. Numerous times this year when the team was being worked hard in defence, Dools would be the one to lift the team. Love it Dools.

James Togagae: James is also playing a year up, but plays just like any other bloke in the comp. Tough and a hard worker, always listens to advice and puts it into practice immediately. A big 60 part of this team that will be missed by us if he decides to play his own age group next year - but then again a massive gain for the U17s of 2011. Great year mate

Corey White: Corey was one of two players I had to choose from at the beginning of the year as I could only have one. I picked Corey not knowing much about him and as it turns out, the team only got to experience a fraction of Corey’s great ability due to school football commitments. Would love to see you back next year mate with some more involvement because with what I saw this year you would be a great full time addition. Great work mate.

Taylor Brown: Taylor again captained the side this year. He led the team up front from pre- season right up until we walked off the field on grand final day. I have a huge amount of respect for Taylor and he would be one of my first picked if I was selecting a rep side. Next year is ours Taylor.

Josh Munoz: Munoz is the type of player you wish you had 3 or 4 of. He just doesn’t stop tackling. Came to pre-season this year a bit unsure of himself and if he had a spot due to new players joining, but I assured him that no one could take his spot. Has been a big part of this team over the last few years and I hope he comes back next year to help us win it.

Rhiannon Tipene-Pihema: Rhiannon is another player who just works and works. If there is a job to be done Rhiannon will do it no matter how hard. He took out the honour of being the first to spew in pre-season, but to me that shows he was working hard. Great attitude and hardly missed a training session all year. See you next year mate.

Bilal Habib: Billy joined us this year having never played footy before. When he started training I wasn’t sure that rugby league was for him, but he persevered and persevered and really surprised me. Never complained at training even when we did penalty after penalty and that type of attitude is the exact type of attitude I love. By the end of the year was putting a few good shots on in defence. Great year Billy. Next year is ours.

Thomas Grealy: Greals is another player playing up this year, not 1 but 2 years. When we were in need of numbers due to injury this year Greals put his hand up to fill in and as soon as his season with the U15s finished, he was down training with us and talking like he’d been with us all season. Set up a great try against Moorebank at home. Great stuff Greals.

TEAM REPORT

It was the first week of March. The Club was struggling to get enough ‘A’ graders and the thought of a 21s as well was crazy talk. When you talk ‘crazy’, you immediately think of Poppy Mayoh who took it upon himself to form a side. He was excited by the concept of combining the 2005 U16 Grand finalists and the remainder of the 2009 ‘A’ Reserve grade to form a 21s. The Club gave him the green light to try and while all the other teams were trialing against Aquinas (it was now 13 March) Poppy was on the phone.

Eventually a team was formed to take part in the Inner City Comp (ICC), a tough combination of 21 year olds from Canterbury, St George, Balmain and Souths. The team looked good on paper and the boys performed well, snaring some early season successes. However, once it started getting cold, numbers dropped off and only the core group was committed – i.e. going to training and turning up for games. With a never ending supply of people willing to play one or two games every year (and never be sighted again!), the team continued to perform and eventually finished 3rd. Everyone hoped the boys would be at full strength for the finals.

62 The 2 v 3 preliminary semi was a tough encounter against La Perouse. With the ICC probably not enforcing rego checks as well as we are used to, La Perouse turned up with a million and ran riot to defeat us 46-4. This threw us into the ‘do or die’ semi against North Ryde at the Crest on a Saturday night in August which was easily the coldest day and night of the year.

Unbelievably, a number of players failed to front which left us with 15 to verse a full squad of 20 (they actually had 22 dressed!!). The boys managed to be only down by 12 nil at half time and with sheer guts and determination, hit the front 14-12 with about 15 minutes to go. By this time we only had 12 fit and with North Ryde using their 20 to full advantage, they steam rolled over us with a few minutes to go. All the boys who played that night (mainly the core group – check out the ‘number of games played’ during the year to see who they are) should be proud of themselves. It was a fantastic effort.

Thanks to Mitch, Annemaree, Jihad and Tyrone for looking after the boys all season. In what were trying circumstances, you managed to get this group to perform above expectations. And it is hoped the core group of boys will be back next year to play ‘A’ grade - after the effort in their last game, that group is ready to step up!

Let the good times roll – senior players and officials enjoying the Ball

MANAGER’S REPORT

Season 2010 was always going to be one of ‘rebuilding’ in what was going to be one of the strongest A Grade competitions in many years. The combined district competition saw sides from St George, Balmain, Souths and Canterbury make up 14 teams.

We ended up fielding a new look side after a disruptive preseason due to the loss of experienced players, a coach and the focus being placed on the nines team.

We finally put a team together and kicked off with good wins over Riverwood, Renown, Berala and Arncliffe before a ten point loss to eventual premiers Auburn. The competition was then re- graded and an ‘A Reserve’ grade formed meaning 7 sides in each competition.

We finished the first round in outright 2nd position, one win behind Auburn and were confident of a big run home. The second half of the season was disrupted by rain and this affected our training, commitment and attitude. This reflected in our results and we had losses to Auburn, Moorebank and Kingsgrove, but still managed to cling onto 2nd spot at the end of the round.

64 Despite our efforts, our downward spiral continued in the semi finals with losses to Bankstown Bulls and the following week to Greenacre.

I have left many issues from this report out of respect to the players who remained loyal to the Club and the team all season. To those, a big thanks for your whole hearted efforts.

Also a big thank you to Steve Mayoh, Alan Wren and Peter Mayoh who care about what and how they coach football sides. They are what make footy clubs. As well, my thanks to Anne Simpson who gave her time to be our chief scorer and timekeeper all year.

With a better attitude, commitment and pride 2011 should bring the team much better results.
