4 Charting Your Course in a Sea of Change Welcome

We don’t know if Governor Harry F. Byrd, Sr. established the Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition in 1927 by an executive order, other edict, or “friendly persuasion” as he was often known to do, but for 85 consecutive years this important meeting – jointly sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and VASSP (and in recent years also with the Virginia Foundation for Educational Leadership) – has been vital to the growth and prosperity of secondary education in the Commonwealth. Under Governor Byrd this annual conference began a professional expectation for “state and local leaders to annually review with Virginia’s secondary school principals, the principals’ roles and responsibilities and to discuss how effective school leadership can be best developed and supported.” This tradition is in its ninth decade, and we continue to examine policies and best practices, and entertain new initiatives conducive to these expectations. One thing has remained constant all of these years. In the education profession, there is usually one leader with ultimate responsibility for driving a specific change initiative in the school. This person is the school principal and could well be called the “Change Champion.” Are you and your faculty prepared for continued change? All schools – whether rural, suburban, urban, small, medium, or large – share the same need to effect changes as quickly, smoothly, and efficiently as possible. The 2012 Summer Conference theme, Charting Your Course in a Sea of Change, addresses the complexity of change preparation. The Conference is designed for Change Champions who see the value of involving faculty members in preparing for change, along with openly communicating what it will take for effective implementation. There are five rudimentary principles commonly used to chart a course to help you get from where you are now to where you want to be. Look Ahead – Obviously, having a sense for where you want to go is imperative. Charting a course for improved performance and productivity begins by having a clear purpose – a mission and vision – about your final destination. Look Around – Before you can set your course, you must have a clear understanding of where you are at this moment in time. This acknowledgement is critical. Chart Your Course – Developing a plan for improving performance and productivity is critical for success. Planning involves developing strategies that are linked to your vision for change and setting measurable goals that help turn vision and strategy into reality. Set the Sails – Setting the sails involves making strategic decisions, on an ongoing basis, which will move you in the direction you want to go. Success and achievement will result from making tactical decisions and taking deliberate actions – every day. Adjust Your Course – The one thing that is absolutely certain… things change. As the conference theme exemplifies, wind changes, sea swells change, and there are ships that come and go that will causeyour ship to temporarily alter its original course. Course corrections are just a reality of good navigation. Many things change between the time you chart your course and the time you set sail. The problem isn’t will things change; the issue is when will they change? As Change Champions all of us must always expect change and be prepared to react to it. The Commonwealth and its public school education system are much different, of course, in this second decade of the millennium than they were during Governor Byrd’s 1920s era. Over the many years the information, strategies and techniques have constantly changed in public school education improvement, but the values and ideals that guided this conference from its beginning remain steadfast. The Summer Conference Planning Committee works hard to bring speakers and topics applicable to universal subjects of interest and current issues important to school principals and assistant principals. This year it is our goal to equip you with the tools to cope with the challenging changes that lie ahead. Enjoy over fifty presentations, the statewide social networking opportunities, and most importantly, always remember to be charting your course in a sea of change.

Thank you for your continued support of the Summer Conference and our efforts to move the school principalship toward a Welcome stronger and increasingly viable leadership role in the education of Virginia’s youth.
