SPORT SCENE Spring 2007 5 MACCABI TZEDAKAH MACCABI WORLD UNION’S PROJECT TIKVAH

Terrorist attacks leave maimed survivors usually 10 times the number killed. Survivors are physically and psychologically wounded. They, and their families, face drastically-changed life situations and Israel’s government can only cover their medical and initial rehabilitation bills. Since 2003, through special sports programs with qualified instructors, PROJECT TIKVAH has restored hope and joy to lives of victims of terror. Victims of terrorism overcome their fears, regain self-confidence and belief in themselves and their abilities, prove to themselves and everyone else that they are back in charge of their lives – often far beyond the abilities of medical science alone. Project Tikvah focuses not just on helping the individual victim with their rehabilitation, but the entire family. They provide services so that the family can work together to face a bright, active future. One large extended family, the workers from the railway station garage in Haifa, suffered a traumatic loss of eight of its workers on July 16, 2006 during a Katyusha rocket attack from Lebanon. Many others were wounded. The station team, whose members describe themselves as “one big family,” were devastated. This close knit group is a highly integrated unit that has socialized together for years. Together they suffered from the intensely traumatic explosion and have to live with its long and pain-filled aftermath. To help provide a ‘bright-spot’ for the entire community, Project Tikvah arranged for a Sports Day for the station workers and their families, including the eight bereaved families. The day was filled with sporting contests and events, and was part of a “Back to Life” activity. At the end of the day, all agreed that sports does wonders for the soul!
