Personalia Démission de Michael Watkins, Directeur du JPL Space News, Parabolic Arc, 10 août 2021 Le JPL a annoncé la démission de son Directeur, Michael Watkins, le 9 août dernier après 5 ans à la tête de ce centre de recherche financé par le gouvernement fédéral et géré par le California Institute of Technology (Caltech) pour le compte de la NASA. Après plus de 20 ans au sein du JPL et notamment à la direction de nombreuses missions telles que Mars Science Laboratory avec le rover Curiosity, ce dernier a choisi de devenir Professeur en aérospatial et géophysique à Caltech. Sous son mandat, Mike Watkins a notamment conduit avec succès différentes missions d’observation de la Terre comme Grace Follow-On et Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich ou encore des missions martiennes avec Insight et le rover Perseverance. Dans l’attente de la sélection d’un nouveau directeur par Caltech, la direction par intérim du JPL est désormais confiée à Larry James, Directeur adjoint du centre depuis 2013. Virgin Galactic's VSS Enterprise First "Captive Carry" Flight
VSS Enterprise’s, First Flight World’s First Commercial Spaceship Takes Inaugural Flight Mojave Air and Spaceport, Mojave, California Monday 22 nd March, 2010 Virgin Galactic announced today that its commercial manned spaceship, VSS Enterprise, this morning successfully completed its first “captive carry” test flight, taking off at 07.05 am (PST) from Mojave Air and Spaceport, California. The spaceship was unveiled to the public for the first time on December 7 th 2009 and named by Governors Schwarzenegger and Richardson. VSS Enterprise remained attached to its unique WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft, VMS Eve, for the duration of the 2 hours 54 minutes flight, achieving an altitude of 45,000ft (13716 metres). Both vehicles are being developed for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, by Mojave based Scaled Composites. Founded by Burt Rutan, Scaled developed SpaceShipOne which in 2004 claimed the $10m Ansari X prize as the world’s first privately developed manned spacecraft. Virgin Galactic’s new vehicles share much of the same basic design but are being built to carry six fare paying passengers on sub- orbital space flights, allowing an out-of-the-seat zero gravity experience and offering astounding views of the planet from the black sky of space. Virgin Galactic has already taken around $45m in deposits for spaceflight reservations from over 330 people wanting to experience space for themselves. The first flight of VMS Enterprise is another major milestone in an exhaustive flight testing programme, which started with the inaugural flight of VMS Eve in 2008 and is at the heart of Virgin Galactic’s commitment to safety. -

A voyage fuelled by the enormous enthusiasm and youthful exuberance of its members and well-wishers. Complementing the other activities of the club, Stellar Chronicle intends to facilitate a platform for exploring, expressing, and conveying the views, observations and creative outputs of the club members and well-wishers amidst a wider audience. I am sure that this objective will eminently be fulfilled, considering the track record of the club powered by the effervescent youth and the galaxy of patrons it has. More than 50 years of Human activities in space has resulted in a continuing flow of social benefits improving the quality of life on earth. Critical knowledge and capabilities for developing Satellite Telecommunications, Global Positioning, Earth Observation, Weather forecasting, Manned spaceflight etc. have emerged. Space exploration has sparked new scientific and technological ingenuity and innovation not to mention the better understanding of our universe and the solar system that has accrued. A new perspective on our individual and collective place in the universe has evolved. It will therefore be our endeavour to bring to you in the form of articles and excerpts, the history of space exploration as also technology as it unfolds. We are fortunate to have a galaxy of eminent space scientists and technologists as also other science and technology domain veterans amidst us, to hold our hands in this onerous task.
