Shade coffee certi®cation programs have emerged over the past six years to verify that coffee marketed as ``shade grown'' is actually grown on farms that provide higher quality habitat for biodiversity. In spite of good intentions and an increasing market, little consensus exists on whether current criteria can successfully identify coffee farms of conservation signi®cance. This paper provides the ®rst ecological evaluation and compar- ison of shade-grown coffee criteria used by major certi®cation programs. Using vegetative data, we evaluated criteria developed by the Rainforest Alliance, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC), and the Specialty Coffee Association of America across a range of coffee agroecosystems in Chiapas, Mexico, to determine which management practices each program would certify. Fruit-feeding butter¯ies and forest bird species found in these coffee agroecosystems were compared with nearby forest reserves as indicators of biodiversity and conservation potential. These agroecosystems fall into three categories: rustic, com- mercial polyculture, and shaded monoculture. The rustic system contained signi®cantly higher fruit-feeding butter¯y diversity and an avifauna more similar to that found in forest reserves than the other systems. This was also the only agroecosystem that met the criteria for all certi®cation programs, while the shaded monoculture fell short of all sets of criteria. -

Tena Flores CIIDIR I.P.N. Unidad Durango, Mexico Abstract—The Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) is the largest continuous ignimbrite plate on Earth. Despite its high biological and cultural diversity and enormous environmental and economical importance, it is yet not well known. We describe the vegetation and present a preliminary regionalization based on physio- graphic, climatic, and floristic criteria. A confluence of three main ecoregions in the area corresponds with three ecosystems: Temperate Sierras (Madrean), Semi-Arid Highlands (Madrean Xerophylous) and Tropical Dry Forests (Tropical). The Madrean region harbors five major vegetation types: pine forests, mixed conifer forests, pine-oak forests, oak forests and temperate mesophytic forests. The Madrean Xerophylous region has oak or pine-oak woodlands and evergreen juniper scrub with transitions toward the grassland and xerophylous scrub areas of the Mexican high plateau. The Tropical ecosystem, not discussed here, includes tropical deciduous forests and subtropical scrub. Besides fragmentation and deforestation resulting from anthropogenic activities, other dramatic changes are occurring in the SMO, including damage caused by bark beetles (Dendroctonus) in extensive areas, particularly in drought-stressed forests, as well as the expansion of chaparral and Dodoneaea scrub at the expense of temperate forest and woodlands. Comments on how these effects are being addressed are made. Box 210036 Herring Hall 1130 East South Campus Drive Tucson, Arizona 85721 ABSTRACT The Municipio de Yécora is in the Tropical Madrean zone of the Sierra Madre Occidental in eastern Sonora, Mexico. The flora is very diverse with 1777 taxa in 150 families and 687 genera. The most important families and genera are Asteraceae (14.5% of the flora), Poaceae (11.3%), and Fabaceae (10.6%), Muhlenbergia (38 taxa), Euphorbia (31 taxa), Cyperus (29 taxa), Ipomoea (26 taxa), Quercus (23 taxa including 7 hybrids), and Dalea (22 taxa). Herbaceous plants dominate the flora (71.3%). Twenty-one species in the Yécora flora have protection in NOM-059-SEMARNAT- 2010. Non-native species are 6.2% of the flora but only buffelgrass ( Pennisetum ciliare ) in the tropical lowlands and Natal grass ( Melinis repens ) in grassland and oak woodland are invasive in natural habitats. Vegetation is zoned from foothills thornscrub and tropical deciduous forest in the lowlands to oak woodland and pine-oak forest in the uplands. Plant species diversity increases with elevation and rainfall, peaking in pine-oak forest. The Yécora flora in the Madrean Tropical Madrean zone serves as a baseline to evaluate Madrean affinities in floras in the Madrean Archipelago in northeastern Sonora and southeastern Arizona. -

Moore, Ph.D. José Villanueva-Díaz, Ph.D. Abstract THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE: ECOLOGY OF OLD-GROWTH FORESTS IN CHIHUAHUA, MÉXICO By Citlali Cortés-Montaño Old-growth forests are valuable but declining worldwide. México still holds large areas covered by temperate forests in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, but few of these retain old-growth characteristics. These forests provide habitat for Thick- billed Parrots (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha: Psittacidae; “guacamaya”), a CITES-listed endangered species. We studied four old-growth remnants in Mesa de las Guacamayas, a site in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Chihuahua, México, to assess the composition, structure, and age characteristics of the overstory, relating it to fire histories and continental and regional climatic data. We linked our findings to the habitat needs of Thick-billed Parrots reported by the literature, and we studied the β-diversity of the understory plant communities at these sites and related them to the composition, cover, density and fire regimes of the overstory. We found that frequent disturbance by surface fires appears to have contributed to maintaining open, diverse, and productive forests for at least 250 years. While climate was a historical driver of the fire regimes in this mountain range, humans appear to have played a role in the fire regime interruptions of the second half of the 20th century. -
