Al Daayen Municipality’s food safety inspection campaign launched

Al Daayen Municipality’s Health Control Section has started to carry out a number of broad inspection campaigns on food outlets under its jurisdiction as part of a strategic plan for the year. The campaigns are set to cover eateries, restaurants and cafeterias in two stages. The first stage, being implemented during February, targets raising awareness about the necessary standards and conditions of food health as well as that of the workers concerned regarding the necessary preventive and precautionary measures against Covid-19. The second phase, to be carried out in March, will include surprise inspection campaigns and taking food samples to ensure the compliance of the food outlets with the necessary conditions and that the workers follow the proper rules of hygiene. GU-Q’s Indian Ocean Research Initiative to gather experts at webinar today

Qatar Foundation (QF) partner Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) will host a public webinar titled ‘South East Asia and East Asia in Studies of the Indian Ocean World: Past, Present and Future’ today. It will feature a multidisciplinary panel of local and international scholars involved in the Indian Ocean Working Group (IOWG) at GU-Q. The panel dis- cussion will seek to identify areas of future research collabo- ration in order to deepen understanding of one of the world’s most culturally diverse regions, GU-Q has said in a statement. Panellists will include professor R Michael Feener from Kyoto University, Dr Weihsin Gui from the University of California, Dr Tansen Sen from NYU Shanghai, and Dr Hideaki Suzuki from Japan’s National Museum of Ethnology. Highlighting the IOWG’s role in creating intellectual links between QF partner universities, the event will be moderated by IOWG member Dr Anto Mohsin from Northwestern University in Qatar. The Indian Ocean rim has been a zone of complex human interaction across land and water throughout world history, explained GU-Q associate professor Dr Phoebe Musandu, a scholar of African history and a founding member of the IOWG. This webinar represents the first time the IOWG has a panel that will be focusing specifically on the farthest reaches of the Indian Ocean rim, she added. Registration for the public webinar is available at https:// www.qatar.georgetown.edu/event/south-east-asia-and-east- asia-in-studies-of-the-indian-ocean-world-past-present-and- future/. Human economic activity makes extensive use of the eco- system services nature provides. Classical economists such as Adam Smith and David Ricardo, who wrote at a time when agriculture accounted for a much greater share of the econ- omy than it does today, were well aware that human activ- ity occurred within the natural world and relied on nature’s bounty. They always included land in their analyses. But modern economics has largely excluded nature from defini- tions and measurements of the economy. Today, of course, the risks posed by climate change are at- tracting more attention, including from investors.
