Tesco Under 16B Championship Sunday, 13th June 2021, 2.30 pm St Brendan's Park, Birr Referee: Bernard Heaney Message from our Chairperson On behalf of the Offaly Camogie County Board, it is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to welcome the Offaly and Kildare panels, their management, backroom teams and officials to St Brendan’s Park today. In what has been a very turbulent time for everyone over the past year or so, it is with relief as much as excitement that we look forward to being able to watch our teams take to the field today. As we do so however, we cannot let this opportunity pass without remembering those that have passed away, whether it be our own loved ones, those associated with our game or people in our community. We keep them in our thoughts today. Today, is significant day for us all as with restrictions easing somewhat, we are finally able to have fans attend our inter county matches. I hope that everyone that comes to today's match enjoys the occasion as you cheer and support your county. I would like to thank our sponsors. We all know it has been a year that has been challenging for businesses and because of this we are extremely grateful to those that have come on board and supported us. I also want to say thank you to Birr GAA for the use of their facilities for today’s match. You are a great support to Offaly Camogie and we are always grateful for the use of St Brendan’s Park. Thank you also to my colleagues on the Offaly, Kildare and all County Executive teams for their continued work as guardians of camogie and ensuring our games continue to be played in extraordinary times. We also thank our colleagues in Leinster Camogie and the Camogie Association for their support and guidance. Finally, my best wishes to the players, management teams and officials in today’s match. Ciara Ennis (Johnstownbridge) Meet the Captains Ciara Maher (Captain) Club: Moneygall Camogie Club Position: Wing/Centre Back Do you play any other sports: Yes, I play rugby with Nenagh Ormond Rugby Club and I play soccer with Moneygall FC Who is your greatest influence? My greatest influence would probably be my coaches who’ve trained me the whole way up along since I was small. Tomás Kenneally would have trained us since Under 10s or before it and has been involved with the team ever since. I’ve won 2 county finals with him and lots of other silverware too, so Tom would definitely be one of my greatest influences over the years. Who is your favourite sportsperson? Briege Corkery would have to be one of my favourite sportspersons of all time. I just thought she was pure class, playing both football and camogie for Cork back a few years ago and with 18 All-Ireland medals won in her county career, I just felt she was one of the best in the game. Who is the joker in the panel? I have to say, Aoibhe Carey and a few others are hilarious, and they would really make you laugh. They are gas tickets, but I have a feeling if you asked them who the joker on the panel was, they would probably say myself! What is your favourite and least favourite parts of training? My favourite part of training has to be having the craic with the girls, whether it is at the start when we are pucking, or playing a match at the end, you just can’t beat it. I wouldn’t really have a least favourite part about training in a way, because I know whatever we do, is for a reason and we will benefit from it all, and generally I enjoy every minute of it. Running now wouldn’t be my favourite but sure it has to be done! What are your aims for 2021? My aims for 2021 is to definitely win silverware with the club and county. It would be a dream come true if we could get to an All-Ireland final with Offaly, and I would absolutely love to win a county final with my club too. Amy Sullivan (Vice Captain) Club: St Rynaghs Position: Wing forward Do you play any other sports? Gaelic football Who is your greatest influence? My sisters Who is your favourite sportsperson? Siobhan Flannery Who is the joker in the panel? Ciara Maher What is your favourite and least favourite parts of training? My favourite thing is playing matches and my least favourite is sprints What are your aims for 2021? Win as much as we can Meet the Captains Shauna Dunne (Captain) Club: Athy Camogie Club. Position: Full Back. Do you play any other sports: Swimming and hill running. Who is your greatest influence? Anna Geary. Who is your favourite sportsperson? Lee Chin. Who is the joker in the panel? Jill Grimes, great personality and amazing team mate. What is your favourite and least favourite parts of training? My favourite part of training is the match at the end of training as it allows us to use skills practiced during the session. My least favourite part would probabaly be sprints. What are your aims for 2021? To give 110% in every game and form a bond with every girl on our Kildare panel. To overcome challenges that are presented to our team and to be successful in this competition. Teigan Brennan (Vice Captain) Club: Celbridge Camogie Club. Position: Centre half back. Do you play any other sports? Gaelic football. Who is your greatest influence? My Dad. Who is your favourite sportsperson? Aisling Thompson. Who is the joker in the panel? Jill Grimes. What is your favourite and least favourite parts of training? My favourite part is getting fit, pushing myself harder, developing skills, learning new ones and making new friends on the team. My least favourite part is doing burpies. What are your aims for 2021? I aim to enjoy every moment and to take the opportunities as they arise especially since the lockdown. • Dr. William Moran
Dr. William Moran Dr. William Moran is remembered by the people of Tullamore with affection and respect. To many parishioners he was seen as a character and there are few of the older parishioners who have not some humorous story to relate concerning him. Dr. Moran came to Tullamore from Trim in October 1949 where he had been parish priest. He was a native of Castletowngeoghegan near Tullamore and was educated at St. Finian’s (Navan) and Maynooth College where he was ordained in 1910. He received a doctorate in divinity in 1913 and after four years as a curate in Mullingar and Collins town he was appointed professor of dogmatic theology in Maynooth in 1917. In 1932 he became prefect of the Dunboyne establishment and librarian in 1932. From there he moved to Trim and in 1949 to Tullamore. Although a competent parish administrator who gave his full support to the local schools building programme of the 1950s, Dr. Moran was happiest among his books and produced a number of books and pamphlets on religious topics including his well known catechism. He also published a number of historical articles including this booklet on the history of Tullamore in 1962. But if Dr. Moran was interested in the past he was also a forward thinking practical man. He seemed to take a special delight in running the annual Corpus Christi procession from the organ gallery of the church with the ‘Tannoy’ system he purchased in 1951. With this system Dr. Moran could broadcast a Maynooth choir for the procession together with a taped recording of his own sermon while he walked around the church and listened, presumably, admiringly, to the whole event.

  • The Pearsons of Coolacrease
TRIBUNE, 7th November, 2007 Exclusive Tribune Feature PAGE FIFTEEN The following exclusive Tribune feature on the Pearsons is partly based on two illustrated lectures Philip McConway gave this year. The first lecture on 15 January at the Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society (OHAS) in Tullamore was entitled ‘Spies, Informers, and Militant Loyalists: The Intelligence War in Offaly 1920-21.’ The article also contains material taken from a lecture he delivered to Birr Historical Society ‘The South Offaly No. 2 Brigade Irish Republican Army, 1920-21’ on 15 October. The recent RTÉ Hidden History documentary The Killings at Coolacrease referred to him as the author of the ‘The IRA in Offaly, 1920-21.’ This is inaccurate. This was the subject of an M.Phil thesis which will be published at a later date. In his contribution, which was heavily edited, he was also quoted as saying the Pearson women were present at the execution. This is not his position having reassessed all the available evidence some months ago. On 25 September he notified this position in writing to the director stating it was dubious the Pearson women witnessed the execution. J.J. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfratemity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death.
