This study describes how several insect species are used, which often follows a series of processes from collecting to consumption and the quite diversified insect utilization based on various skills and knowledge in ethnoento mology. Even though insects are not an important subsistence resource, the San have an extensive knowledge and make good use of insects. The insects even spice up the San daily life. Key words: insects, ethnoentomology, diversified utilization, food, material, children's play INTRODUCTION The San are known to use many kinds of natural resources and possess great knowledge of nature (Lee, 1979; Tanaka, 1980; Silberbauer, 1981). The principle objectives of San studies have focused on the hunting and gathering subsistence system. Although these studies detailed the uses of various resources, little atten tion has been paid to the uses of marginal resources, which I believe are essential in discussing the San's deep and broad knowledge of nature. This paper will describe their extensive knowledge of insects. Through my research, I found that the San are usually in contact with insects in their daily lives and interact with them in various ways. -

African Butterfly News celebrates its first year of existence; the first edition, 2016-5, was circulated in September last year. The photographic competition commenced in August 2016, so the annual award will be made in the next, Spring Edition – for purposes of the photographic competition, the season starts in August and ends in July. Dave and Hanna Edge, LepSoc Africa’s Treasurer and Membership Secretary respectively, were caught up in this drama, and had to evacuate their house (refer to Dave’s eyewitness account below). Fortunately, the building survived the fire, although the nearby Brenton Blue Reserve was incinerated. All fences, sign boards and marker-posts were destroyed – it is hoped that some larvae or pupae of the Brenton Blue (Orachrysops niobe) are still alive, safely underground. See a report under COREL under the “Projects” section. Some of you may have seen an article in the Sunday Times, by Aaron Hyman, a friend of Christopher Dobson. Mikunthan2 Department of Agricultural Biology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka Abstract— Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae) is one of the main crops grown for pods and leaves in Jaffna home gardens in Sri Lanka. After the introduction of Periyakulam 1 (PKM 1) Moringa, a leaf eating caterpillar (Noorda blitealis Wlk.) turned out to be a serious pest causing damage to the leaves. Considering the severity of the damage, this study was carried out to find out the suitable biorationals to manage the pest in an eco-friendly method. Using the leaf disc dipping method biorationals such as 1% neem oil, 3% neem seed kernel extract and 2.5g/L neem leaf extract were used to determine the larval mortality. Consumption of the treated leaf area was measured to determine the larval antifeedant activity for 1% neem oil, 3% neem seed kernel extract, (2.5g/L) neem leaf extract, 15% (g/mL) garlic extract and 75% fermented cow urine and ash solution. Distilled water was used as control in both experiments. The experiments were carried out at a temperature of 28.9 ± 1.13°C and 73% relative humidity in complete randomized design. On the 6th day after treatment larval mortality in 1% neem oil, 3% neem seed kernel extract and 2.5g/L neem leaf extract were 85%, 83.33% and 70% respectively. -

Seasonal distribution of moths of the Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in Ogongo, northern Namibia Grzegorz KOPIJ Department of Wildlife Management, University of Namibia, Katima Mulilio Campus, Private Bag 1096, Katima Mulilo, Namibia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the years 2011–2013, moths were collected in Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in the Cuvelai Drainage System, Ovamboland, northern Namibia. In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Da fessalis nicht zu Noorda gehört, wie eine Über- prüfung dieser Art ergab, kann angenommen werden, daß auch atripalpalis nicht zur blitealis-Gruppe zu stellen sein wird, um so mehr als atripalpalis ein ganz abweichen- des Zeichnungsprinzip besitzt. Ich selbst beschrieb außerdem noch eine Noorda uni- punctalis (Stuttg. Beitr. Naturk. Nr. 121: 3, Taf. 1 Fig. 3 [Imago]) 1963 aus Konso in SW-Äthiopien und stellte sie zur blitealis -Gruppe, da das Zeichnungsprinzip dieser Art offensichtlich deren Einreihung hier erfordert. -
