Lowden Petition, Arkansas State Archives, Little Rock, Arkansas. - Page 3 - Arkansas for Lowden petition SMC.025.004 Biographical Note Frank Orren Lowden was a Republican Party politician from Illinois who served as the 25th Governor of Illinois and as a United States Representative from Illinois. He was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920 and 1928. Frank Lowden was born in Minnesota, but his family moved to Iowa where he attended Iowa State University. He graduated from Chicago’s Union College of Law in 1887 and practiced law for over twenty years. He married Florence Pullman, the daughter of George Pullman, the inventor of the Pullman sleeping car. Lowden’s political career began around 1900 when he became involved in the local Republican party and then went on to serve on the Republican National Committee. In 1906, Lowden was elected as United States Representative from Illinois, a position he continued to hold until 1911 when he declined to run for reelection. He served as Governor of Illinois from 1917 until 1921. Lowden ran as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination unsuccessfully in 1920, 1924 when he declined the Republican nomination for Vice President, and 1928. Scope and Contents This collection contains a petition for the nomination of Frank O. Lowden for President of the United States, circa 1928.
