The Reporter Volume 16 Issue 4 The Newsletter of the Waupaca Historical Society Fall 2012 WHS Board of Directors: Dennis Lear, President; Mike Kirk, Vice President; Betty Stewart, Secretary; Bob Kessler, Treasurer, Jerry Salan, Tracy Behrendt, Gerald Chappell, Glenda Rhodes, Deb Fenske, David Trombla, Joyce Woldt, Don Writt, and Marge Writt WHS Director: Julie Hintz Hutchinson House Museum Curator: Barbara Fay Wiese The Book Festival at the Holly Center - A Special Day Sponsored by the Waupaca Historical Society for participation in the 2012 Waupaca Book Festival, architectural historian Wendell Nelson arrived at the Waupaca Holly History and Genealogical Center around ten o’clock Saturday October 13, 2012, and set up for his PowerPoint presentation on classic area house styles in the downstairs Cynthia Holly Room. As members of the Waupaca Historical Society have long appreciated, the Cynthia Holly Room is a fine place for a speaker to present as it seats about 50 people, has comfortable chairs in a theater arrangement (or if desired a table arrangement), and is not so large as to need a microphone. Following an introduction by Jerry Chappell, Nelson’s presentation readily captured the attention and advanced the knowledge of over 30 Book Festival attendees who were able to closely study his slides on ten styles of house architecture. Wendell showed about three examples of each style as he pointed out critical identifying and differentiating features of homes, including Italianate, Greek Revival, Victorian Eclectic, Gambrel-roofed, Tower, Square, Cement Block, and Stucco architecture. Afterward, a number of copies of Wendell’s classic 1983 book Houses That Grew were sold. -

GENEVA MEDICAL COLLEGE* Geneva Medical College was chartered in 1834 and gave its first course of instruction in 1835. Its first faculty were Edward Cutbush, Willard Parker, Thomas Spencer, John George Morgan, Charles B. Coventry and Anson Colman. Its faculty at a later period, including several years, were James Hadley, John Delamater, Thomas Spencer, James Webster, Charles B. Cov entry, Frank H. Hamilton and Charles A. Lee. After the Buffalo Medical School was opened the Geneva faculty was re-organized, consisting at dif ferent times of the following members: John Towler, A. P. Bowen, Fred er.ick Hyde, William Sweetzer, Joel Hardy, Caleb Green, George Burr, James H. Jerome, Alfred Butler, Nelson Nivison, Hiram N. Eastman, Ezra T. Allen and Charles E. Ryder, some of whom continued in their places, laboring in the school until it closed in 1872. When the Geneva Medical School was merged into the Medical Department of Syracuse University, the following members of its faculty, Towler, Hyde, Nivison, Eastman and Ryder, accepted professorships in the latter new institution.-Medica/ Register of. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, I88I, p. 205. (Seep. 77·) Geneva Medical College as such had an existence of thirty-seven years, from 1835 to 1872. The period of its greatest prosperity being from 1840 to 1850. The largest class being that of 1844, with 196 matriculating stud ents and 47 graduates. The smallest graduating class being four, in 1856. During these thirty-seven years the degree of M. D. was conferred on 701 students.-Dr. Alfred Jl.fercer. (Seep. 77). KENNEDYAND BERLIN Nicholas Labinski Marquette University, 2011 This paper examines John F. Kennedy’s rhetoric concerning the Berlin Crisis (1961-1963). Three major speeches are analyzed: Kennedy’s Radio and Television Report to the American People on the Berlin Crisis , the Address at Rudolph Wilde Platz and the Address at the Free University. The study interrogates the rhetorical strategies implemented by Kennedy in confronting Khrushchev over the explosive situation in Berlin. The paper attempts to answer the following research questions: What is the historical context that helped frame the rhetorical situation Kennedy faced? What rhetorical strategies and tactics did Kennedy employ in these speeches? How might Kennedy's speeches extend our understanding of presidential public address? What is the impact of Kennedy's speeches on U.S. German relations and the development of U.S. and German Policy? What implications might these speeches have for the study and execution of presidential power and international diplomacy? Using a historical-rhetorical methodology that incorporates the historical circumstances surrounding the crisis into the analysis, this examination of Kennedy’s rhetoric reveals his evolution concerning Berlin and his Cold War strategy. -
