    NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Aft er a fl ying start as Yniold in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (Edinburgh and Glasgow 2005: “poignant brightness” wrote Opera magazine), and as “a real revelati on” (Il Giornale della Musica) in the ti tle-role of Bernardo Pasquini’s oratorio Sant’ Agnese (Innsbruck Festi val 2008), she established an enduring performing relati onship with William Christi e and les Arts Florissants, for whom outstanding performances have included Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, The Indian Queen, and Dido and Aeneas, Handel‘s Susanna and Silete venti , Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale, and numerous roles in French Baroque operas including Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie (at Aix-en- Provence and Glyndebourne) and Platée (at the Theater an der Wien, the Opéra Comique and in New York), Lully’s Atys (Sangaride – “a sensati on” according to Opéra magazine), and Campra’s Les Fêtes véniti ennes (at the Opéra Comique, Caen and Toulouse). Emmanuelle has made regular performances with other prominent French ensembles such as Pulcinella, Les Folies Françoises, Les Enfants d‘Apollo, Raphaël Pichon’s Pygmalion, Vincent Dumestre‘s Le Poème Harmonique, Le Banquet Céleste, Les Paladins, and Les Accents. Federico Maria Sardelli has been a notable protagonist in the Vivaldi renaissance of the past few years: he conducted the world premiere recording and performance of many Vivaldi’s operas. In 2005, at Rotterdam Concertgebouw, he conducted the world premiere of Motezuma , rediscovered after 270 years. In 2006 he conducted the world premiere of Vivaldi’s L’Atenaide at Teatro della Pergola in Florence. In 2012 he recorded the last eight Vivaldi works reappeared ( New Discoveries II , Naïve) and conducted the world premiere of the new version of Orlando Furioso , rediscovered and reconstituted by him (Festival de Beaune, Naïve recording). In 2007 he has been Principal Conductor of Händel Festspiele in Halle, where he conducted Ariodante. Among the most important production he has conducted, Giasone by Francesco Cavalli at Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, Olivo e Pasquale at Festival Donizetti Bergamo, Dido and Aeneas at Teatro Regio Turin, La Dafne and Alceste at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Händel’s Teseo at Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow.

Le Banquet Céleste, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019, has been in residence at the Opéra de Rennes since 2016, and regularly appears at major early music festivals across France and Europe. With in-demand counter-tenor and founder Damien Guillon at its centre, the ensemble focusses particularly on Baroque music for the counter-tenor voice, with works by Dowland, Bach, Frescobaldi, Pergolesi and Caldara forming part of its growing discography of repertoire released on Alpha and Glossa. Les Eléments et le Chaos sont des thématiques qui ont fortement marquées les compositeurs d’opéras au XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Ainsi en 1721 est créé au Palais des Tuileries Les Eléments, ballet de Michel-Richard Delalande et André-Cardinal Destouches, avec la participation exceptionnelle à la danse du jeune Louis XV, alors âgé de onze ans, et de tout les « jeunes seigneurs de la Cour ». Cet opéra-ballet aura connu un grand succès et aura une influence très importante durant tout ce siècle, puisqu’il sera rejoué aussi bien à Paris qu’à Versailles, ou à Fontainebleau jusqu’en 1781 ! Mais l’opéra n’était pas uniquement l’apanage de grandes institutions, on aimait alors à transporter les opéras dans des cadres plus intimes, et jouir ainsi des derniers « airs à la mode ». Nombreux sont les exemples de concerts privés, aux effectifs variés, s’adaptant tant aux cours royales qu’aux salons bourgeois. Les œuvres étaient remaniées afin d’être en cohérence avec le lieu et l’effectif à disposition.     ANNICK MASSIS Soprano Following her completion of two university degrees, French soprano Annick Massis made her operatic début at the Capitole de Toulouse in 1991. Then she made her debut in Blonchen from Die Entfùhrung aus dem Serail at the Castre's festival. During the same season, her performance of the title role in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera at the Opéra de Nantes brought her to the wider attention of the public. Attracting the notice of celebrated film and opera director Gabriel Dussurget, Miss Massis teamed with Bernard Thomas, with whom she gave numerous concerts featuring sacred music by Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Bach, and their contemporaries. In addition to the Baroque liturgical repertory, Mozart roles were prominent in the formative years of Miss Massis’ early career. In addition to singing in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opéra Bastille (Paris) in 1994, Miss Massis also took part in numerous concerts featuring Mozart’s Great Mass in C-minor (K. 427), his Requiem (K. 626), the motet ‘Exultate, jubilate’ (K. 165), and other notable works. Under the batons of noted Baroque-repertory specialists Jean-Claude Malgoire, William Christie, and Marc Minkowski, Miss Massis began her exploration of the monumental sacred works of Georg Friedrich Händel and the masterpieces of the French Baroque. The public and the press alike quickly recognized Miss Massis as one of the most important singers of her generation and praised her contributions to resurrecting the superb music of the French Baroque. Miss Massis experienced in the works of Händel and the French Baroque a series of personal successes, both in theatres and on recordings.

    NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XIX, Number 1 April 2004 THE THOMAS BAKER COLLECTION In 1985 the Music Library of The University of Western Ontario acquired the bulk of the music collection of Thomas Baker (c.1708-1775) of Farnham, Surrey from the English antiquarian dealer Richard Macnutt with Burnett & Simeone. Earlier that same year what is presumed to have been the complete collection, then on deposit at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, was described by Richard Andrewes of Cambridge University Library in a "Catalogue of music in the Thomas Baker Collection." It contained 85 eighteenth-century printed titles (some bound together) and 10 "miscellaneous manuscripts." Macnutt described the portion of the collection he acquired in his catalogue The Music Collection of an Eighteenth Century Gentleman (Tunbridge Wells, 1985). Other buyers, including the British Library, acquired 11 of the printed titles and 4 of the manuscripts. Thomas Baker was a country gentleman and his library, which was "representative of the educated musical amateur’s tastes, include[d] works ranging from short keyboard pieces to opera" (Macnutt, i). Whether he was related to the Rev. Thomas Baker (1685-1745) who was for many years a member of the choirs of the Chapel Royal, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey, is not clear.
