Shrews, Moneylenders, Soldiers, and Moors: Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Harelik, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Professor Lesley Ferris, Adviser Professor Jennifer Schlueter Professor Shilarna Stokes Professor Robin Post Copyright by Elizabeth Harelik 2016 Abstract Shakespeare’s plays are often a staple of the secondary school curriculum, and, more and more, theatre artists and educators are introducing young people to his works through performance. While these performances offer an engaging way for students to access these complex texts, they also often bring up topics and themes that might be challenging to discuss with young people. To give just a few examples, The Taming of the Shrew contains blatant sexism and gender violence; The Merchant of Venice features a multitude of anti-Semitic slurs; Othello shows characters displaying overtly racist attitudes towards its title character; and Henry V has several scenes of wartime violence. These themes are important, timely, and crucial to discuss with young people, but how can directors, actors, and teachers use Shakespeare’s work as a springboard to begin these conversations? In this research project, I explore twenty-first century productions of the four plays mentioned above. All of the productions studied were done in the United States by professional or university companies, either for young audiences or with young people as performers. I look at the various ways that practitioners have adapted these plays, from abridgments that retain basic plot points but reduce running time, to versions incorporating significant audience participation, to reimaginings created by or with student performers.

ROGERS, THEATRE FOR A NEW AUDIENCE has earned dozens of honors and provided a congenial home for directors like Arin Arbus, Bartlett Sher, and Darko Tresnjak and for actors like Kathleen Chalfant, Mark Rylance, and John NATIONAL ARTS CLUB Douglas Thompson. It was the first American troupe to 15 Gramercy Park South present the Bard in Stratford’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Manhattan and its powerful rendering of The Merchant of Venice, with F. FEBRUARY 2014 WELCOME Welcome to a new year and a new lineup of plays at The Old Globe! As we look ahead to 2014, we also celebrate the end of a successful and groundbreaking year. In 2013, the Globe produced 14 shows, which earned a to- tal of 33 Craig Noel Award nominations. Two of those productions—Pygmalion, directed by Nicholas Martin, and Other Desert Cities, directed by Richard Seer— DOUG GATES had second lives at other regional theatres across the Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. country, and another—A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, directed by Darko Tresnjak—is now running on Broadway. In 2013, we also marked the beginning of Artistic Director Barry Edelstein’s tenure at The Old Globe, and we are delighted to start 2014 with his Globe directorial debut. The Winter’s Tale brings together a mix of artists both new and familiar to the Globe. We’re pleased to have in the cast seven current students from The Old Globe/Uni- versity of San Diego M.F.A. Program in classical acting. Also among the actors, Globe audiences may recognize Billy Campbell (The Comedy of Errors, Much Ado About Nothing), Angel Desai (Double Indemnity), Paul Michael Valley (Beyond Thera- py), and Jordi Bertran (Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!). We welcome the rest to the Globe for the first time. It’s a special honor to have renowned composer Michael Torke, a major name in contemporary classical music, making his Globe debut with this production. Along with an A-list design team, these gifted artists stylishly shepherd Shakespeare back onto the Globe stage after a dozen-year gap.
