Player of the Week: Dash Training Award: Sabastian

A great game of football so often starts with some well- spoken words from the Coach. “You were born to be a player. You were meant to be here. This moment is yours.” “Victory is in having done your best. If you’ve done your best, you’ve won.”

While an extra early start had the boys rubbing the sleep from their eyes, this was a day where eighty years of Coorparoo Football Club tradition was on the line. The boys from Coorparoo Gold U8 did not disappoint as they ran onto the field epitomising a new generation of players and wearing the club emblem with pride.

In a game where Morningside had the upper hand, it was clear that Coorparoo Gold was starting to show some excellent form. Throughout the game they never gave in. Not once. While some runs went the wrong way, they were still able to take the run away from a number of Morningside’s star playmakers. The defence from the likes of Brayden, Toby and Jackson was exceptional. Their pressure was relentless, enabling Coorparoo Gold to win a few of the one-on-one battles. Finlay flew high to claim a strong mark and then went back for an attempt at goal. Oscar and Nicholas were hugely influential, each collecting 8 disposals. Ethan was a ball magnet with 6 touches and 4 clearances. Lucas, who has had had plenty of practice standing up to his bigger brother, marked his man and took some handy handballs. He was ably supported by Dash and Daniel who were awarded with some nice marks. Sebastian and Toby set up by much-improved performances our key midfielders, who racked up plenty of possessions.

Half time signalled some much needed water and oranges along with some well thought out words of encouragement and support from Coach Andrew Park. The Umpire’s bounce signalled the start of the third quarter. Toby jumped high in the ruck with a good pair of hands finding the ball. Some well-placed kicks by Ethan and Oscar caused all sorts of problems for Morningside. A great run by Dash and then a handball to Sabastian saw another near goal.

The 25 strong crowd of supports cheered from the stands as the Coorparoo Gold U8s continued to impress the selectors. The final siren signalled the end of another great game of footy played on a perfect Brisbane day.

Dash showed his recent form was no accident with a well-deserved “Player of the Week” award, while Sabastian was rewarded with the “Trainer of the Week” award.

www.coorparoojafc.com Page 5 roos news Match Reports COORPAROO U13 DIV 2 NAVY vs ALEXANDRA HILLS U13 SUNDAY 1ST AUGUST AT KEITH SURRIDGE PARK

Well it’s a balmy 24 deg here today at Keith Surridge Park. Coorparoo vs Alexandra Hills to try and secure second spot for the all-important finals in 3 weeks’ time.

First quarter sees both teams take time to get into their respective structures and also feel out each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Cory takes an early clean mark to get Coorparoo rolling and follows it up a short time later with a smother that would make The Rock proud. Hard wins, win games, could this be the stage for a Coorparoo assault? The game slows for a few minutes with Alexandra Hills winning back possession and surging down the middle for a goal. A probing kick towards the sticks. It looks like Alexandra Hills have rebounded strongly to score a certain goal. Matthew leaps through the forming pack to take a great defensive mark. Goal denied. Fast forward another few minutes, Coorparoo open Alexandra Hills up. Mark to Kai, kick to Will. Another mark, another kick, another mark and possession for Matthew. Coorparoo are now starting to use their foot speed and its showing. With three and half minutes to the break, Sean slots Coorparoo’s first goal.

Back from the first minor break, Flynn cleans up a messy bouncing ball. He sends a booming kick down the middle. Coorparoo pressures the defence and after a few defensive lapses, Sean takes another shot on goal to kick his and Coorparoo’s second major. Hugh and Zach are now rising to the challenge in the ruck. It’s a tough position, but it sets the midfield for attack when they get it right. Now they are and it shows. The midfield is really dominating in both defence and offence. Alexandra Hills make a quick probe up the left flank and it looks worrying for Coorparoo until Ayla goes in heroically with a hard tackle and wins a turnover. A few kicks from here and the ball goes astray to the Alexandra Hills fullback but Sean exerts great forward pressure gets to the ball and is rewarded with a free kick. Another goal. The game ebbs and flow until 2 minutes from half-time when Alexandra Hills post their first major.

The teams return for the third quarter. The temperature’s risen and so has the tempo of the game. It’s now an arm-wrestle for dominance in the middle. Flynn takes a defensive mark, plays on quickly down the left flank to probe the Alexandra Hills wingmen. No go. Just under 5 minutes to go in the quarter and a big push by Alexandra Hills finds some holes in the defence. Is Coorparoo tiring? Jackson and Connor put in a great team tackle, ball spills and is kicked along the ground. Alexandra Hills scoop it up, Juan chases the player down and spoils their kick. It’s starting to get close to the siren – a hurried kick, but accurate, Liam scores a goal. Coorparoo’s fourth for the match and the hardest won so far! Another few minutes passes a Flynn takes a set shot nearly 40m out. He nearly kicks the skin off the ball and slots it through the middle. That’s memorable. Siren goes for the quarter.

What’s going to happen in the fourth, Coorparoo won a tough and sometimes messy third quarter, but can they finish the game off to take momentum into next week’s clash? A beautiful passage of play, Kai on the left flank, into Flynn in the middle to Sam H to Will. As polished a piece of play as you’ll see all year from the team. The final shot on goal just misses but now the team have stepped up a gear. Next comes 5 minutes of unrelenting Coorparoo offence but to their credit, hard scrambling defence by Alexandra Hills only concedes two behinds – they’re not going down without a fight. Now it’s Alexandra Hills turn to probe Coorparoo’s resolve. They find some gaps and press down the middle but Sam H gets a turnover passes to Jaxon who bravely earns a free kick. He passes down the centre. Sam P gets possession and goals. Coorparoo 6.7.43 to Alexandra Hills 1.1.7.

This is one game that definitely doesn’t reflect the closeness of the game but Coorparoo showed they can be methodical in capitalising on an opportunity when it shows. Fantastic to see how the team as a whole lifts to another level when they come together. Well done Roos. Great game by both teams in hot conditions. There’s a team looking forward to a cool night match next game!
