Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms
Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms by Denis J. Bekkering A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfillment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2015 © Denis J. Bekkering 2015 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. My wife Erica is the main reason that this project has been completed. -
There Were Two Sequels: Spy Kids 2: the Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, As Well As the 2011 Reprisal, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World
‘PICTURE PERFECT MYSTERIES: DEAD OVER DIAMONDS’ Cast Bios ALEXA PENAVEGA (Allie Adams) – A Miami native, Alexa PenaVega is an actress and a singer. Her career began as a young girl in 1996, when she starred as Jo Harding in the hit film Twister. After that, she guest-starred in various television shows and films such as “The Bernie Mac Show,” “ER” and “Ghost Whisperer.” The movie that catapulted her to worldwide fame was the 2001 film Spy Kids, in which she starred as Carmen Cortez. After the enormous success of that movie there were two sequels: Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, as well as the 2011 reprisal, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. PenaVega went on to appear in many other films such as Sleepover, State’s Evidence, Odd Girl Out, Walkout, Remember the Daze, Repo! The Genetic Opera, and The Pregnancy Project. While PenaVega has an impressive movie filmography, she has also had massive success in other areas of the entertainment industry. She played Penny in Hairspray on Broadway, had TV roles in shows such as “Ruby & the Rockits” and “Big Time Rush,” appeared in the video for Aerosmith’s “Legendary Child” and was a contestant on Season 21 of “Dancing with the Stars.” PenaVega is also a singer – over the course of her Spy Kids career she contributed three songs to the various movie soundtracks (“Isle of Dreams,” “Game Over” and “Heart Drive”). She also sang “Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You” for Walt Disney Records’ compilation album Songs to Celebrate the 25 Days of Christmas in 2009. -
Becoming “American”: Race, Class, Gender, and Assimilation
BECOMING “AMERICAN”: RACE, CLASS, GENDER, AND ASSIMILATION IDEOLOGIES IN YOUNG ADULT MEXICAN IMMIGRANT FICTION by JANIE IRENE COWAN (Under the Direction of Joel A. Taxel) This dissertation explores representations of race, class, gender and ideologies of assimilation in thirty-two young adult novels involving the Mexican immigrant experience published from 1953-2009. The study draws upon several theories, but is primarily located within the paradigm of critical Marxist educational, cultural, and literary theories including the sociology of school knowledge and critical multiculturalism based upon the work of Raymond Williams, Michael Apple, Joel Taxel, Stephen May and Christine Sleeter. I also draw upon theories of assimilation throughout U.S. history such as e pluribus unum, the melting pot, multiculturalism, transnationalism, and hybridity, with emphasis upon the work of Homi Bhabha that conceptualizes cultural hybridity as spaces of cultural negotiation and rearticulation. To provide further context for the study, I also review representations of Mexican Americans in larger American culture via historical accounts, school textbooks, and the entertainment media of television and film. I address the following research questions: What ideologies of assimilation are suggested in young adult contemporary fiction involving the Mexican immigrant experience? How do they change (or not change) over time? How do the intersections of assimilation ideologies and representations of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and gender in young adult contemporary -

What Are You Going to Do with the Rest of Your Life? A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Kelly K. Ferguson May 2014 © 2014 Kelly K Ferguon. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled What Are You Going to Do with the Rest of Your Life? by KELLY K. FERGUON has been approved for the Department of English and the College of Arts and Sciences by Dinty W. Moore Professor of English Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT FERGUSON KELLY K., Ph.D..May 2014, English What Are You Going to Do with the Rest of Your Life? Director of Dissertation: Dinty W. Moore This dissertation is comprised of two sections: a critical essay entitled "Postmodern Persona Creative Nonfiction" and an essay collection, "What Are You Going to Do With the Rest of Your Life?" "Postmodern Persona in Creative Nonfiction" examines the use of multiple personas within nonfiction. For writers working within the era of Postmodernism, the self-identified fractured self often requires a multi-voiced persona to best explore complicated issues. The critical essay then examines these personas as they manifest in Truman Capote, Alison Bechdel, Janet Malcolm, and D.J. Waldie, as well as in the author's own work. "What Are You Going to Do With the Rest of Your Life?" contains essays that examine notions of identity and self as affected by sense of place, race, education, job status, and external appearances. -

But Larry Wilcox, who rode his motorcycle to everlasting fame in the old “CHiPs” TV series, says that for now, he’ll give the benefit of the doubt to “CHIPS,” the forthcoming film based loosely - very loosely - on the show that made him and Erik Estrada two of the biggest stars of the 1970s and early ‘80s. “I have not seen the film but the trail- ers looked like a soft-porn version of ‘Dumb and Dumber,’” Wilcox said recently. “However, I hear the actors are both very talented and funny, so maybe it all works.” Fans of the original “CHiPs,” In this combination photo, musician, songwriter and still widely seen in reruns and on DVD, TV personality Kandi Burruss, left, appears at the OK! are far less forgiving.
