Condo Owners Forum Society of Alberta Speakers - Symposium September 15, 2018 Brian Malkinson – Minister for Service Alberta Brian Malkinson was elected to the legislative assembly of Alberta as the member for the constituency of Calgary-Currie on May 5, 2015. He was appointed Minister of Service Alberta on June 18, 2018. He has served as deputy chair of the Standing Committee on Legislative Offices and the Select Special Auditor General Search Committee. He has also served as a member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship. Malkinson is originally from British Columbia. He obtained a degree in science from Simon Fraser University, where he served as the president of the Interactive Arts and Technology Student Union. He has been employed in the heavy-equipment industry as a salesman at a heavy-duty engine supplier since making a career change from working as a designer/analyst for Internet startups. Malkinson resides in Calgary, where he enjoys car restoration, music, art and recreational sports. [email protected] http://www.servicealberta.ca Luis Pando-Lopez – Service Alberta Based in Calgary, Luis has a Masters of Laws from the University of Alberta and a Law Degree from the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota (Colombia). He also holds a Masters in Energy Law from the Instituto Superior de la Energia in Madrid (Spain), and a Masters in Economics from the University of Barcelona (Spain). Luis is a Policy & Project Advisor with the Market and Industry Standards / Consumer Programs Division of Service Alberta. He is working as with the Statute Administrator (Director of Condominiums) supporting the Ministry of Service Alberta through the final steps of the policy approvals processes regarding the stage two amendments to the Condominium Property Act implementation as well as starting to implement stage three: the Dispute Resolution Tribunal. Luis has lived in condominiums and has represented owners at AGM’s. He has lived 18 years in condominiums, both in British Columbia and in Alberta. During that time, he has served on the Board (8 years), including as a Board President (6 years). He has experience as an entrepreneur, a Realtor and as a Real Estate Office Manager. Maurice has built two houses and completed numerous renovations. In his careers he acquired significant experience in interpreting legal documentation. He is currently a Director of the Canadian Condominium Institute North Alberta and has attended the Condominium Management 100, 200 and 300 courses. He is an active member of the Edmonton Police Service Veteran’s Association. [email protected] Paul Vanderhooft – Insurance Paul is the Commercial Insurance Manager at Westland Insurance Group in Lethbridge where he specializes in Property, Liability and Automobile Insurance Solutions for Small-to-Medium Enterprise, Not- For-Profit Organizations & Faith-Based Organizations. Paul has been insuring condo unit owners and condominium corporations for the past 15+ years. He has also served on a number of not-for-profit boards and is very experienced with board dynamics. He is an Associate in the Condominium and Litigation groups of McLeod Law in Calgary where he practices in general litigation including the areas of condominium, employment, commercial litigation, real property construction and trademark litigation. In his condominium legal practice, David advises and represents condominium corporations, homeowner associations and their respective boards of directors, property managers, owners and developers. These matters include developer deficiencies, governance issues, bylaw enforcement to human rights issues. David has extensive experience in all areas of litigation and dispute resolution, including judicial dispute resolution, mediation, questioning, court appearances and trials. Roxanne’s litigation practice focuses on employment, commercial litigation, and health law. Roxanne represents both employers and employees in a wide range of complex employment law matters. Her employment practice includes drafting employment agreements and workplace policies, advising on compliance with employment related laws, conducting workplace investigations, representing clients in disability claims and human rights complaints, advising on terminations and negotiating settlements of wrongful and constructive dismissal claims. Roxanne also regularly represents clients in commercial litigation matters (including contract and shareholder disputes) as well as litigation and arbitration of construction matters (including builders’ liens, contractual disputes, deficiency disputes and condominium matters). Roxanne has served as a Director of the Association of Women Lawyers since 2009 and is currently AWL’s President. She is also a member of the Women in Law Leadership Awards organizing committee. https://carbertwaite.com/ [email protected] Kevin Kelly – Legal Panel and Dispute Resolution Kevin has practiced law in Calgary since 1994 with a primary focus on alternative dispute resolution, real estate, estate planning, and business law. He provides legal advice to individuals, small business owners and condominium corporations, non-profit organizations, national and multinational corporations. He is a nationally accredited Arbitrator and Mediator with extensive training in negotiation, conflict management, arbitration, mediation and administrative justice. He regularly acts as an arbitrator, mediator, board meeting facilitator and coach to help parties manage conflict and resolve their disputes outside of court, and is also an adjudicator on various hearing panels and appeal boards. Kevin advises and represents condominium corporations on numerous matters, including governance and best practices, drafting and amending bylaws, conversion to and termination of condominium status, facilitating condo board meetings and dispute resolution. He is currently the Chair of the Governance Committee for the ADR Institute of Alberta and serves on the Property Management Advisory Committee for the Real Estate Council of Alberta. He is also a learning group facilitator and evaluator for the Alberta Bar admission program administered through the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education.
