Many of the traditionally important medicinal plants contain active molecules or ones that serve as precursors to biosynthesised secondary metabolites to which the biological activity could be attributed. Marrubiin is one such compound and is a potential valuable compound which exists in high concentrations in many traditionally important Lamiaceae species which have demonstrated excellent pharmacological properties with commendably high safety margins. Marrubiin’s attributes include a low turnover, high stability and little catabolism, which are core characteristics required for therapeutic compounds and nutraceuticals of economic importance. In addition, marrubiin is considered a potential substrate for potent active compounds viz; marrubiinic acid, and marrubenol. The contribution of marrubiin to drug discovery thus needs to be put into prospective due to its ready availability, high potential applications and ease of modification. -

Weed Identification and Control Sheet: www.goodoak.com/weeds Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) DESCRIPTION: Motherwort is a perennial, herbaceous plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Originally from Eurasia, it has been spread worldwide due to its use as a medicinal herb, used particularly for ailments of the heart, nervous system and a variety of issues related to childbirth. It is sold by nurseries as a commercial herb, which has no doubt accelerated its rate of spread in the midwest. Motherwort can be found in sunny or shaded places, often in highly disturbed sites. It is becoming particularly common and problematic in many woodland sites. IDENTIFICATION: Motherwort is usually 2-4’ tall with a heavily ridged square stem. The leaves are oppositely ar- ranged along the stem, and though the shape is vari- able they tend to have 3 or 5 sharply-pointed lobes. The edges of the leaves are also deeply toothed and the veins are conspicuous along the upper surface of the leaves. Flowers are located immediately above where the leaf stalks meet the stem, circling the stem in a whorl. The small, tubular, lavender flowers are generally hairy or fuzzy which bloom from June through August. The seeds are born in spiny burs that can be irritating of caught in clothing or, in particular, animal fur. PIRVU1 1National Institute for Chemical-Pharmaceutical R&D (ICCF-Bucharest), Vitan Road 112, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania, email: [email protected] Abstract Antioxidative effects of crude extracts from some Romanian Lamiaceae species have been studied with the use of three in vitro assays - DPPH reduction spectrophotometric assay, phosphomolybdenum method and chemiluminescence assay. Also, HPTLC fingerprints and total phenolic content of the extracts were analyzed in order to establish a relationship between chemical composition and pharmacological activity. All the assays confirmed the good antioxidant potential of the Lamiaceae species and in particular of the Nepetoideae subfamily. The most efficient activity was exhibited by Salvia officinalis L., Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Thymus vulgaris L. extracts, probably due to a high content of polyphenols. On the other hand, Lamioideae species like Lamium album L. and Leonurus cardiaca L. have a polyphenolic low content and, consequently, prove a weak or no antioxidant activity. The results were different depending on the applied test. Although Origanum vulgare L. has the highest content of polyphenols expressed as gallic acid, it showed a good scavenging activity only on DPPH free radical. Ethnopharmacological Study of Native Medicinal Plants and the Impact Of
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Ethnopharmacological study of native medicinal plants and the impact of pastoralism on their loss in arid to semiarid ecosystems of southeastern Iran Mohsen Sharafatmandrad * & Azam Khosravi Mashizi The purpose of this study was to gather ethnopharmacological information on plants used by the pastorals of southeastern Iran. The relationships between ecological value of the plant species and ethnobotanical indices were investigated. The loss of medicinal plants and its efective factors were also determined under nomadism and sedentary pastoralism. Ethnopharmacological information of plants was collected through interviews with 85 local people including nomads (43%) and sedentary pastorals (57%). Ethnobotanical indices including relative frequency of citation (RFC), relative importance (RI), cultural value (CV), and use value (UV) were estimated. Canopy cover and density of plant species were measured at 60 sampling plots in the exclosure, nomadic rangelands and sedentary pastorals rangelands. The Importance Value Index (IVI) and Relative Loss Index (RL) were estimated for both nomadic and sedentary pastoral rangelands. Pearson correlation coefcient was used to investigate the relationship between ethnobotanical indices and IVI of plant species. The Bayesian networks was used to investigate the relationship between ethnobotanical indices and plant species loss. In total, 156 medicinal plant species of 50 families were identifed in the region by locals. Positive correlation was observed between ethnobotanical indices (RFC and RI) and ecological index (IVI). The mean decline of the ecological importance of medicinal species in sedentary pastoral rangelands was approximately three times higher than in nomadic rangelands. Bayesian networks showed that cultural value, seed exploitation and aerial parts exploitation had direct relationships with species loss in both nomadic and sedentary pastoral rangelands.
