Biblia 3.2. Fuentes 3.3. • Raphael Meldola in Livorno, Pisa, and Bayonne
Chapter 7 Defining Deviance, Negotiating Norms: Raphael Meldola in Livorno, Pisa, and Bayonne Bernard Dov Cooperman* 1 The Secularization Thesis The link between modernization and secularization has long been a staple of Jewish historiography. Secularization was the necessary prerequisite for, and the inevitable response to, Jews’ “emancipation” from discriminatory legal provisions. It was evidenced in the abandonment of Jewish ritual observance, an intentional imitation of external norms that was either to be praised as “enlightenment” or decried as “assimilation,” and the abandonment of Jewish “authenticity.” The decline in observance was accompanied by, or justified by, a parallel abandonment of traditional religious beliefs and theological concepts. And at the same time, the kehilla, the autonomous Jewish community, lost its ability to enforce religious discipline and suppress unacceptable religious ideas.1 Thus the transition to modernity was equated with a decline in rabbini- cal and communal authority, the abandonment of traditional behaviors, and the collapse of orthodox mentalities. In a famous article published almost a century ago, the young historian Salo Baron questioned whether moderniza- tion had been worth such a great cultural and communal cost.2 But he did not question the narrative itself; if anything, his regret over what was lost rein- forced the assumption that modernization and secularization were one. * My thanks to Professors Gérard Nahon and Peter Nahon as well as to Doctor Nimrod Gaatone for their thoughtful comments on this paper. While I was unable to take up their several ex- cellent suggestions here, I hope to do so in further work on Meldola. Of course, all errors are my own.

Cardoso, Excelencias 2 Introduction Las excelencias de los hebreos (Amsterdam 1679) is a treatise describing the positive characteristics (excelencias) of the Jewish people and a containing a refutation of common anti-Jewish calumnies (calunias) written by Isaac Cardoso (b. Fernando Cardoso, Trancoso, Portugal 1603 - d. Verona, Italy 1683). Cardoso was born in Portugal to a converso crypto-Jewish family.1 He was educated at the University of Salamanca (Spain), where he excelled in the sciences. He wrote a number of scientific treatises and served as chief physician at the court of Spanish king Philip IV (r. 1621-1665). Eventually he and his younger brother Abraham Miguel Cardoso (1630-1706) fled to Venice, where they were allowed to live openly as Jews. In Venice, Cardoso continued to work as a physician and scientist. There he published an ambitious liberal arts curriculum in Latin, a great compendium of science and philosophy in which he refutes the very popular Kabbalistic mysticism championed by the false messiah Shabbetai Tzvi.2 However, Isaac Cardoso’s younger brother Abraham Miguel was a follower of Tzvi and accomplished kabbalist in his own right, and this sibling rivalry may well have fueled Isaac’s anti-Kabbalistic fervor.

religions Article The Lulav: Early Modern Polemical Ethnographies and the Art of Fencing Ahuvia Goren Department of Jewish History, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva 8410501, Israel; [email protected] Abstract: In recent years, scholars have devoted a great deal of attention to the history of scholarship in general and, more specifically, to the emergence of critical historical and anthropological litera- ture from and within ecclesiastical scholarship. However, few studies have discussed the Jewish figures who took part in this process. This paper analyzes the role played by historiographical and ethnographical writing in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian Jewish–Christian polemics. Tracing various Christian polemical ethnographical depictions of the Jewish rite of shaking the lulav (sacramental palm leaves used by Jews during the festival of Sukkot), it discusses the variety of ways in which Jewish scholars responded to these depictions or circumvented them. These responses reflect the Jewish scholars’ familiarity with prevailing contemporary scholarship and the key role of translation and cultural transfers in their own attempts to create parallel works. Furthermore, this paper presents new Jewish polemical manuscript material within the relevant contexts, exam- ines Jewish attempts to compose polemical and apologetic ethnographies, and argues that Jewish engagement with critical scholarship began earlier than scholars of this period usually suggest Keywords: early modern history; Jewish–Christian polemics; history of scholarship; Italy Citation: Goren, Ahuvia. 2021. A Contested Presence Portuguese New Christians in the Spain of Philip IV, 1621-1632 Yonatan Glazer-Eytan On Sunday, July 4, 1632, the Spanish capital of Madrid witnessed the greatest Auto de Fé the city had ever held.1 Organized in the city’s Plaza Mayor and attended by the royal family along with ranking members of the government, the spectacle offered the Castilian multitude an impressive display of Catholic piety and power. King Philip IV manifested his commitment to the eradication of heresy with a sworn oath to defend the faith and support the Holy Office in front of Antonio Zapata, the Inquisitor-General of Castile. Following that ritual, Fray Antonio de Sotomayor, the king's confessor and soon to be the successor of Zapata, preached a sermon addressed to the public. But the highpoint of the Auto came when an official of the Holy Office announced that seven of the prisoners present at the event were sentenced to be burned at the stake. Among the condemned were six Portuguese New Christians, descendants of baptized Portuguese Jews who migrated to Castile after the annexation of Portugal by Spain in 1580. Their crime: involvement in an act of sacrilege which came to be known as the Cristo de la Paciencia affair. The affair in question began in September 1630, with the Inquisition's arrest of several Portuguese New Christians living in Madrid. Although initially charged with Judaizing, the testimony of a young boy known as Andresillo, the son of two members of the aforementioned group, altered the nature of the charge.

  • 11 the City, the Ghetto and Two Books. Venice and Jewish Early
FOCUS The City, the Ghetto and Two Books. Venice and Jewish Early Modernity by Cristiana Facchini Abstract In 1638 two books written by two Venitian rabbis were published in Venice. They were both destined successfully to reach wide circulation over the following decades. This article aims at exploring the intimate connection between Venice, a city which deeply influenced the imagination of European culture during the early modern period, and its Jewish ghetto, the first of its kind to be founded within Catholic lands. The author suggests that it was here in Venice, within the liminal space of the ghetto, that the theory of Jews as merchants, marked by undertones of utilitarianism was finally drafted. It also suggests that, in conjunction with this well-known theory, other theories based on religious tolerance were elaborated. The paper also invites the reader to view the ghetto as a space capable of enacting special religious encounters, mainly driven by an interest in religion and rituals. Therefore, the very specific local and tangible conditions of the urban environment – the city and the ghetto – performed a very important undertaking, for example, debates over the place and role of Jews in Christian society. The most Serene Republic and the ghetto “And amongst the cities of Europe, Rome and Venice are the most frequented for the pleasures and delights they minister to all the beholders of them. Rome for the exceeding wonderful relics of her ancient greatness, and Venice for the gloriousness of her present and magnificent estate.” (Giovanni Botero) In the midst of the seventeenth century, when the emersion of the absolutist monarchy was becoming a self-evident political reality, the republic of Venice proudly stood a remnant of an ancient and glorious republican past.

The Excelencias represents the culmination of Cardoso’s spiritual and physical path from Catholic Spain to the Jewish ghetto in Verona in order to (re)identify with his ancestral religion, Judaism. In the Excelencias, Cardoso defends and explains Judaism to non-Jews, and he helps other conversos like himself make the difficult transition from Christianity to Judaism. The project consists of an introduction giving a short biography of Cardoso, an analysis of the Excelencias, a comparison to three other prominent Jewish apologists of the seventeenth century (Leon da Modena, Simone Luzzatto, Menasseh ben Israel), and a comparison between the Verona ghetto and the Jewish community in Amsterdam (where the text was printed).
