BY LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press NEW YORK — Corritta Lewis has a huge extended family. Her mom is one of 12 sib- lings. Usually, Christmas means that she, her wife and their 2-year-old son dig out their cold-weather gear for the schlep from home in sunny Southern California to Ohio and days of holiday chaos. Not this year. “We’re happy to be saving money, spend- ing more time together, and to just have a less stressful holiday,” said the 31-year-old human resources analyst in Oceanside. “We don’t have to deal with the crowded airports, stores and overall mania that the holiday brings. We’re going to lie in our pa- jamas and watch movies all day.”

Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller on Thursday signed a memo order- ing the implementation of 15 broad recom- mendations that include a plan to crack down on participation in hate groups by service members and draft proposed changes to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The AP obtained a copy of the me- mo on Friday. The plan, however, skirts the more politi- cally sensitive issues that have roiled the nation and the Trump administration this year, such as the renaming of bases that honor Confederate leaders or removing Confederate statues. Such steps are ex- pected to get quick attention from Con- gress or President-elect Joe Biden’s incom- ing administration next month. “I expect all leaders to take an aggres- sive approach to embed diversity and in- clusion practices into the core of our mil- itary culture,” Miller said in the memo. “We must not accept — and must intention- DANIELLE MCBRID/U.S. Air Force ally and proactively remove — any barriers Second Lt. Illegal winery busted at town’s sewage plant RAINSVILLE — Sher- AL iff’s officials say they’ve busted an illegal winery that was operating at a municipal sewage plant in a small north Alabama town. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement it re- ceived an anonymous tip about an alcohol operation at a municipal building in the town of Rainsville. Investigators then uncovered what’s described as a large illegal winery inside the Rainsville Waste Water Treatment Plant. Photos released by investiga- tors show glass containers, buck- ets, a fermenting rack and other equipment often used by people who make wine at home. The agency said officers seized a lot of illegal alcohol, and arrests are expected. The town of about 5,100 people is 100 miles northeast of Birmingham. It’s legal to make limited amounts of wine at home in Alaba- ma, but it’s illegal to have more than 15 gallons of homemade wine or beer at a time. Police photos show multiple fermenting vessels filled with what appears to be more than 100 gallons of white and red liquid. Players, owners reach deal on 56-game season

BY STEPHEN WHYNO Associated Press Drop the puck in mid-January? The Na- tional Hockey League is well on the way to making that happen. The NHL and players reached a tentative deal Friday to hold a 56-game season that would begin Jan. 13. The NHLPA executive board gave the agreement a green light to proceed, but players and owners must hold formal votes and Canadian health officials give their approval before it becomes real- ity. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly con- firmed the sides have an agreement, pend- ing the approval of various executive com- mittees. Players on the NHLPA’s executive board call Friday night supported moving for- ward with the agreed-upon terms, accord- ing to a person with knowledge of the meet- ing. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because players had yet to officially approve the agreement. The league’s Board of Governors could vote on the plan as soon as this weekend. Approval from health officials in the five Canadian provinces that have teams is still needed before the NHL can go ahead with the season. Training camps for the seven non-play- off teams would open Dec. 31 and then Jan. 3 for the other 24 teams. It’s unclear wheth- er teams would play in their home arenas or in “hub” cities, though an all-divisional schedule is expected. Exhibition games aren’t expected to be included in the leadup to the new season. Sportsnet in Canada first reported the ten- ADAM HUNGER / AP tative agreement.
