When 17 and uncertain about her gender identity, she came out as gay. Her family responded negatively, resulting in her attempting to commit suicide. Ross attended the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for one semester before joining the U.S. Navy to qualify for the G.I. Bill. Six months later, Ross requested to be discharged under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy due to harassment. Ross transitioned from male to female when she was 19 years old, leading to her mother and step-father rejecting her genuine gender identity. Eventually, Ross left to live with her dad in Roanoke, Virginia, waitressing so she could earn enough money to attend cosmetology school. After facing discrimination in Virginia, Ross moved to Hollywood, Florida, where she overhauled a website for her employer and taught herself how to code computers. Ross later became the employment coordinator at the Trans Life Center in Chicago, Illinois, assisting transgender people obtain health care and security. In 2014, Ross founded a non-profit organization, TransTech Social Enterprises, that provides transgender people with technical training and helps them find employment in technology industries. In 2018, Ross was cast as Candy in the critically acclaimed series "Pose," and starred as Donna Chambers, a psychologist, in the "American Horror Story" series. Late in 2019, Ross hosted the official discussion of LGBTQ+ issues with the 2020 Democratic canditates in the presidential race, becoming the first transgender person to host a national presidential candidate forum.
