Godavari is the most important river in Andhra Pradesh often referred to as 'Dakshina .. Ganga'. Taking its origin in the Western ::--~<. - .." -~~-~~ojL;~ Ghats near Nasik and after cutting across the r. ",.~:#. -;'~~~~'IIi!~~~~ Eastern Ghats through the magnificent Papi Hills gorge, Godavari emerges at Polavaram into the coastal plain. From hereon, the river widens and assumes majestic proponions of about 3 kms. at Rajahmundry and nearly 6 kms. at Do wleshwaram, before it flows into the Bay 01 Bengal near Kakinada on the East Coast. At Rajahmundry, the vital Madr~s-Howrah East-Coast line crosses the Godavari and a single line bridge constructed in 1900 A. D. at a cost of Rs. 48 lakhs. spans the river. The old bridge consists of 56 span~ of 45.7 metres (150 ft.) and a land span of 12 metres (40 ft.) totalling 2,771 metres (9,096 ft.) between the abutments. The Howrah-Madras line is one of the vital Railway trunk-routes in the country carrying principally coal, steel and surplus food grains from the rich agricultural lands of coastal Andhra Pradesh to the south. -

CHAPTER - IV THE SETTING CHAPTER IV THE SETTING 4.1 Introduction Educational development of people is mostly determined by the factors like geographical and economic conditions, political ideology, system of education, tradition and culture of the society, etc. These factors highly influence the education of people and their living conditions. In the present study, it is more significant to observe extensively geographical conditions of the proposed area because this would guide the investigator to understand the society pertaining to the study. The area of research under investigation is Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh State. It is noteworthy to mention here that Krishna District is one of the educationally developed Districts of the State. The present chapter provides geographical profile of the setting of the study located. 4.2 Profile of Andhra Pradesh Andhra Pradesh is one of the southern states of the Indian sub-continent, it was formed on 1st November 1956 under the state’s reorganization scheme. It is the fifth largest state with an area of 2, 76,754 sq.km, accounting for 8.4% of India’s territory (Andhra Pradesh National Disaster Risk Reduction Portal, 2012). It has a total of 23 Districts in combination of three regions Coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema. The official language of the state is Telugu whereas Urdu is the co- official language. Each region has different dialect of Telugu but the dialect of coastal Andhra is considered as standard. The main language Telugu is spoken by 83% of the population followed by Urdu (8.63%), Hindi (3.23%) and Tamil (1.01%). -

10/31/2018 District Irrigation Profiles IRRIGATION PROFILE OF EAST GODAVARI DISTRICT *Click here for Ayacut Map INTRODUCTION East Godavari District lies in between 16° 30' to 17° 00' N Latitude and 81° 30' to 82° 30'E Longitude and occupies a geographical area of 10,807 Sq. Km. spread over in 60 Mandals with population of 51.515 lakhs (2011 census). The East Godavari District is bordered by river Godavari on West and Bay of Bengal on Eastern side. The district flourishes with lands of fertile soils, good rain fall and balance climatic conditions and possesses all the nature's hand work like perennial rivers, mountains, forests and also the sea coast. The district is enriched by huge water resources of River Godavari and major streams like Yeleru, Suddagedda, Pampa and Thandava. The Delta coastal line is around 150 Kms in the Eastern sea board of India with minor ports at Kakinada and Odalarevu. The mean annual rainfall precipitation is 1219 mm and is mostly confined to the period from June to November.
