  • Premieres Program Showcases Some of the Most Highly Anticipated Films of the Coming Year
The Premieres program showcases some of the most highly anticipated films of the coming year. Catch world premieres and the latest work from established directors at the Sundance Film Festival before they create a splash at local theatres. Cedar Rapids DIRECTOR: Miguel Arteta SCREENWRITER: Phil Johnston U.S.A., 2010, 86 min., color Miguel Arteta returns to the Sundance Film Festival with a comedy about a group of Premieres insurance salesmen who use the opportunity PRESENTED BY ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY to attend an annual convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as a way to escape their doleful existence . like Vegas but with corn. Tim Lippe has been living in a small town his whole life and gets a rude awakening when he arrives in the “giant” metropolis of Cedar Rapids. However, his boyish charm and innocence eventually win over his fellow conventioneers, but he becomes disheartened when he uncovers corporate corruption. When it seems his life—and chances to succeed—are completely topsy-turvy, he finds his own unjaded way to turn things around. Cedar Rapids deftly straddles that line between laughing at and with its subjects thanks to Arteta’s skilled direction and Ed Helms’s hilarious, yet thoughtful, performance. John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. play off Helms perfectly to fashion characters that are eccentric, yet honest. Filled with quotable dialogue and unforgettable scenes, Cedar Rapids achieves the impossible: it makes insurance fun.—T.G. Pr: Jim Burke, Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor Principal Cast: Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Alia Shawkat, Sigourney Weaver Sunday, January 23, 9:30 p.m.

Oliver, who lives in Swansea with his parents, is desperate to impress the girl of his dreams, and at the same time trying to save his parent’s marriage. Told in the style of Oliver, this quirky and comedic film delivers an interesting narrative structure in which the developing relationships and identities merge. Oliver is a socially alienated outsider who falls for Jordana. This budding relationship faces a number of obstacles that are told in a frank but touching manner as Oliver learns about himself and those who surround him. Moments of innocence, comedy and absurdity combine, such as Oliver being convinced that if he poisons Jordana’s dog it will help her cope with her mother’s potential death.

PRODUCTION STORY Jane, the character at the bruised and beautiful heart of Eternal Beauty, presented herself to writer director Craig Roberts while he was editing his 2015 directorial debut JUST JIM. The middle sibling of three sisters, she is a paranoid schizophrenic who lives in the shadow of a domineering mother, and who regularly receives odd, ominous phone calls (at least when she stops taking her medication) from a mystery man – perhaps her first love who left her at the altar. “The character came fully formed,” says Roberts. “I just kind of knew those people, to be honest. I wrote some of it while I was in the edit of JUST JIM, but then I went away to do an acting job where I was stuck in a hotel in Atlanta for a long time, and basically wrote it in a month.

  • Submarine Director: Richard Ayoade 2011 (95’)
Submarine Director: Richard Ayoade 2011 (95’) Oliver Tate wants to be admired and popular at school and when naughty Jordana Bevan takes an interest in him, he's determined to take his chance. Meanwhile, his parents' already rocky relationship is threatened when his mother's ex-boyfriend moves in next door. Oliver makes some unorthodox plans to ensure that his parents stay together and that Jordana still loves him. “…is only sometimes outright funny, but Submarine always maintains a wry, melancholic wit. It's a very winning debut by Ayoade, who impresses mightily.” The Independent “Richard Ayoade’s Submarine feels like the most refreshing, urgent and original debut the British film industry has seen in years.” The Telegraph “Writer-director Richard Ayoade has the knack. A fresh and inventive cinematic voice, he's taken a subject that's been beaten half to death and brought it miraculously to life in his smart and funny debut feature, Submarine.” Los Angeles Times Vocabulary and expressions A vigil : A period of time when people remain quietly in a place, especially at night, when, for example, they are praying or remembering someone who has recently died. To wank: To masturbate (offensive term). To be gagging for something/to do something: If you say that someone is gagging for/to do something you are emphasizing that they want it or want to do it very much (informal). His name is Oliver Tate. OLIVER TATE’S SHORT SYNOPSIS I have been waiting too long for the film of my life. My name is Oliver Tate. This film will capture my particular idiosyncrasies, for example, the way I seduce my classmate Jordana Bevan using only my mind. Also, since my parents’ marriage is being threatened by a man who runs courses on Mental and Physical Wellbeing, the film will probably feature some elaborate set-pieces of me taking him down. There will be helicopter shots. There will be slow-mo, but also transcendent moments, like when I cure my father's depression. Knowing me as I do, I will be surprised if this film runs to less than three hours. Note to the press: appropriate adjectives to describe this film include "breath-taking" and "irresistible" as well the phrase: "a monumental achievement”.
