Our Next President & His “First Dude” by Chris Narloch n April 14, 2019, Pete Buttigieg (pronounced “Boot Edge Edge”), who has been the mayor of South Bend, Indiana since 2012, formally announced that he is seeking the Democratic nomination for president of the United States in 2020. If elected, he would Obe the first openly gay American president as well as the youngest ever. Like many people, I thought the “gay mayor” from Indiana running for president was a gag (or an attention grab) until I started reading about Buttigieg and caught his poised appearances with the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Stephen Colbert on their talk shows. Evangelical Christians and secular homophobes might disagree, but Buttigieg, it turns out, is extremely presidential in every way that matters -- far more so than the current resident of the White House, who I prefer to call “The Pussy Grabber.” Pete Buttigieg is a devout Christian (take that, Mike Pence!) who was raised in Catholic schools and is now a regular church-going Episcopalian. Unlike Donald Trump, who has been known to insult the U.S. military, the “gay mayor” actually served his country. (Buttigieg is a former naval intelligence officer who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 for seven months.) A 37-year-old native of South Bend, Buttigieg graduated from Harvard, was also a Rhodes Scholar, and speaks half a dozen languages. He returned to his hometown and eventually became its mayor, successfully restoring the city’s parks and significantly spurring economic growth and business development in South Bend. His presidential platform is as impressive as the rest of his resume. Film Noir At Tower & Avengers In IMAX by Chris Narloch inematic superhero supporters and fans of film noir will have plenty to be happy about in May, as the Avengers take over CIMAX screens and black-and-white classics come to the Tower.

Thor returns for “Avengers: Endgame.” Avengers: Endgame There were no press screenings of this film before our deadline, but I will definitely be heading over to Sacramento’s IMAX after the new “Avengers” movie opens on April 25, to see how Marvel Studios concludes this monstrously successful superhero saga. Let’s hope the filmmakers can build on the prior movie’s intriguing ending. Lord knows there should be no shortage of butt-kicking action since the film’s run time is reportedly clocking in at a hefty 182 minutes. The only way to properly experience “Avengers: Endgame” is to see it in IMAX 3D and have your hair blown back by the amazing sound system and the gigantic screen at the Esquire IMAX on K Street. For more information, visit https://www.imax.com/imax-esquire-oo.

Film Noir At Tower Sacramento’s historic Tower Theatre is the place to be during the month of May, as that Broadway landmark screens a classic film noir each Wednesday evening. First up is a showing of “Gun Crazy” on May 1, which includes a post-screening Q&A with Eddie Muller, a film noir expert from Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Subsequent titles being shown in May are “Mildred Pierce” with Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon,” “Double Indemnity” starring Barbara Stanwyck, and Orson Welles in “The Lady from Shanghai.” Go to https://www.readingcinemasus.com/tower/showtimes-and-tickets/special-screen/ film-noir/advance-tickets.

outwordmagazine.com April 25, 2019 - May 9, 2019 • No. 623 Outword Magazine 17 A Trio Of Sensitive Singer- Studs by Chris Narloch he recent enormous popularity of , the flame- haired hit-maker who hails from the UK, has ushered in a Twave of young male artists who wear their hearts on their sleeves. Here are reviews of new CDs from three such singers, who I’m sure would love to duplicate Sheeran’s success. – Sing To Me Instead This 25-year-old singer- songwriter won a well-deserved Tony Award for his remarkable lead performance in the original cast of the Broadway blockbuster “.” I saw Platt on Broadway (and was blown away by him) so perhaps my hopes were too high for this CD, but I have to say that I was disappointed by the singer’s occasionally cheesy lyrics and his frequent over-singing on his debut pop . There are a number of fine songs on “Sing To Me Instead,” such as “Hurt Me Once” and “Grow As We Go,” but when Platt ratchets up the emotion, as on “Honest Man” and “Older,” the less-than-subtle results can be painfully overwrought. Hopefully, the singer will realize that sometimes less is more, and he will rein it in a bit, Ben Platt next time out.

Dermot Kennedy – Dermot Kennedy This handsome, 27-year-old Irish folk-rocker has a slight rasp in his voice that makes him even sexier, and he uses it to great effect on this self-titled disc’s twelve tasty tracks. “,” Kennedy’s recent single and the first cut on the CD, is deliriously addictive -- at least to my ears -- and other soulful selections such as “Glory” and “” are equally successful. Dermot Kennedy is an artist to watch, and this passionate record is by far my favorite among the three in this article.

Dean Lewis – A Place We Knew This 31-year-old Aussie singer scored a tearjerker hit with “Be Alright,” a bittersweet ballad about leaning on friends to get you through a breakup. I especially like the way Lewis’ accent doesn’t disappear when he sings. The singer’s lyrics feel passionate and personal, and Lewis wisely includes several up-tempo tracks that keep the CD from being a bummer. When you are as talented as this artist is, a little heartbreak goes a long way.

Storm Large

Any show with a parental advisory is my kind of night, and so the warning that “Storm’s show includes mature subject matter and profanity” had me at hello. As her name portends, Storm Large is every bit the natural phenomenon. After shooting to prominence on “Rock Star: Supernova,” Large has built a career that includes regular gigs with Pink Martini and the Oregon Symphony, as well as her own one-woman shows. With her longtime band, Le Bonheur, Large leads a bold show that includes the Great American Songbook, Broadway standards, rock anthems and her own original songs -- alongside some unfiltered stage banter that will entertain (and perhaps elicit a few blushes along the way). Storm Large & Le Bonheur perform at the Mondavi Center on Friday evening, May 3. For more information and tickets, go to https://www.mondaviarts.org/event/2018-19/storm-large- le-bonheur.

Roseanne Cash The highly acclaimed singer-songwriter and multiple Grammy winner Roseanne Cash long ago stepped out of the shadow of her famous father’s legendary career, and she continues to honor the late, great with her own powerful music. Cash, whose recording career encompasses country, pop, Americana music and more, will perform at Sacramento’s Crest Theatre this May in support of her current Blue Note release, “.” An intimate performer whose deeply personal lyrics can move a listener to tears (and to tears of joy), Cash is currently involved with the creation of a musical version of “Norma Rae,” the 1979 film that won Sally Field her first Best Actress Oscar. Cash’s past hits include such memorable songs as “,” “,” “Runaway Train,” “The Way We Make A Broken Heart,” and “.” You can catch Cash at the Crest on Saturday evening, May 11.
