2 I I. CHAIRMAN’s MESSAGE As the global economy enters its 4th year of crisis, recession and budget austerity, there is evidence that private initiative to alleviate the hardship of the most vulnerable stratum of our society has become more and more urgent. Despite the fact that all businesses have to adapt to the new challenges of a shrinking economic activity, the collective responsibility for social welfare, for the protection of cultural heritage and environmental well-being, but also for equal opportunities in education and healthcare should remain on top of the agenda of any corpo- rate and institutional leadership. We can proudly report that Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria, together with BNP Paribas S.A. - Sofia Branch and its partners, has fully lived up to this preroga- tive of greater philanthropic commitment also in 2011. Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria in its first full year of existence has not only taken over most of the important corporate philanthropy activities from the bank BNP Paribas S.A. - Sofia Branch in Bulgaria, but in 2011 has created several additional initiatives, based on its principal objectives: It is worth mentioning the creation of the Sofia Table – a pioneer food bank project in Bulgaria, and the donation of 4 wind power generators for the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, both major projects, giving sustainable benefits from a humanitarian and environmental perspective. Let me thank all the partners of Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria, their Board members, Execu- tives and voluntary supporters, for the many hours of diligent, unpaid work, for their creativity and ambition to make it happen and for their commitment to our common causes. You have applied best practice and lived up to our ambitions of giving back value to the Bulgarian society by creating welfare and happiness to those in need. My utmost wish is that Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria shall continue to grow and to prosper in the materialization of its various philanthropic projects and along our common vision: …to help natural and legal persons, whose activities are geared towards cultural, social, scien- tific, humanitarian or educational purposes and those who create artistic value or contribute to the protection of the environment… Ullrich-Guenther Schubert Chairman of the Management Board of Foundation BNP Paribas Bulgaria FOUNDATION BNP PARIBAS BULGARIA ANNUAL REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES II. • Post-Mortem Interpretations of WWI in Bulgaria
CHAPTER 10 Commemorating the Dead and the Dynamics of Forgetting: Post-mortem Interpretations of WWI in Bulgaria Nikolai Vukov The history of modern Bulgarian literature offers an unusual case of the identification of mortal remains. In January 1954, during construction activi- ties near the Iliyantsi Fort, a residential neighborhood of Sofia, several earth pits that had once served as mass graves were accidentally discovered. The graves, that contained between two and three hundred human skulls, were soon recognized as holding the remains of victims in the bloody repressions that followed the terrorist act at the Sveta Nedelya Church on April 16, 1925.1 In the skull bearing the number seventeen, excavators and forensic experts found a blue glass eye, which was identified as belonging to the famous Bulgarian poet, translator, and journalist, Geo Milev (1895–1925).2 Additional proof for the identification was that the skull bore the marks of a series of trau- mas that were consistent with the wounds that Milev had suffered in the battle 1 The Sveta Nedelya attack took place on Great Thursday, April 16, 1925. A group of radical left activists of the Bulgarian Communist Party set an explosion on the roof of the church in the center of Sofia. The attack was a response to the official banning of the Bulgarian Communist Party after the September 1923 Uprising, the persecutions and murders of its members, and the introduction of the Law for the Protection of State in the spring of 1925, which legal- ized the repression of communists and their supporters. The explosion was planned to take place during a burial service of General Konstatin Georgiev who had been killed by commu- nists several days earlier.

4 X 10 EASTERN AVANT-GARDE ORBIT DIGITAL DELIGHTS | LIST NO. 2, DECEMBER 2016 Dear clients, colleagues and friends, I am hereby glad to present my new short list »Digital Delights«, edition no. 2. The following 52 pages contain four chapters with 40 new arrivals as well as carefully selected items from my stock related to the Eastern European Avant-Garde orbit. 10 illustrated books, magazines and/or ephemera each created by major proponents of Latvian, Bulgarian, Czech and Yugoslavian avant-garde movements from the 1920s and 1930s are waiting to be discovered by you. Starting with the astonishingly rich activities of the »Riga activists« in Latvia the presented orbit crosses Europe from the Northeastern to the Southeastern hemisphere to pass Bulgaria and it's short lifted but nevertheless fervent modernist scene around Geo Milev (Please also consider my monography »Bulgarian Modernism. Books and Magazines 1919-1934« still available in my webshop). Heading north again the Czech movement and it's specifically versatile design culture are to be browsed, whereas the last point of this journey finally is to be found in the Balkans: Nadrealizam is the keyword here. So, please enjoy browsing, watching and reading, and of course I am very much looking forward to your feedback and orders. In this respect I will compare the relationship between the writers and the power wielders in Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia during the first twenty years of communist power in the two countries (1948-1968). My main idea is firstly to trace the influence of the international context on the domestic scene in Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia, and then to show how writers in the two countries answered the challenges posed by their political context.
