You can work through the course at your own pace, so if you have more time one week there is no problem with pushing on to complete another week’s study. This free badged course is always available on OpenLearn. You can study whenever you wish and at a pace that suits you. At the end of each week a short quiz provides an opportunity for you to check your understanding. These short quizzes also prepare you for the longer quizzes at the end of Weeks 5 and 8. If you score over 50% on both these quizzes you can claim the Open University badge for Taking your first steps into higher education. Week 1 provides an overview of the course and gets you to think about what you might get out of it. Weeks 2 and 3 introduce what it’s like to study arts and humanities subjects at university. Weeks 4 and 5 introduce what it’s like to study social science subjects at university. Weeks 6 and 7 introduce what it’s like to study science, technology and maths at university. Week 8 looks back over the course and encourages you to think about your next steps. In recent decades, this early error though has become widely known to the public and several theories were proclaimed, how this misconception was born. The most famous one, known in many varieties and reported in numerous books and scientific journals, is that a simple decimal error occurred. More recently it was claimed that the story of the decimal error is itself a myth and that Popeye against popular belief originally did not eat spinach for its iron content.

The two- and three-story brick masonry commercial building is located in the Central Business District. The property encompasses Santa Monica Lot X and W, Block 195, which is approximately 110 feet by 150 feet. The Bay Builders Exchange Building has an L-shaped footprint and occupies roughly half of Lot X and the entire lot W. The subject property has been identified and assessed under the City’s ongoing survey process on three previous occasions. The commercial building was first identified and recorded as part of the 1985-1986 Phase I survey process.1 The subject property was recommended eligible for the National Register as a contributor to the “Third Street District” and given a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) status code of 5*/5D. The subject property was later reassessed during the City’s 1994 Historic Resources Inventory Update following the 1994 Northridge earthquake.2 As a result of the earthquake, there was substantial damage to the entire building that affected the integrity.

    Internet Journal of Criminology © 2010 SPINACH, IRON and POPEYE: Ironic lessons from biochemistry and history on the importance of healthy eating, healthy scepticism and adequate citation By Dr Mike Sutton∗♣ Student: “Why does Popeye eat spinach?” Professor: “For iron.” Student: “Show me the evidence.” Abstract To inform knowledge in research methods and dissemination ethics for the natural and social sciences, this article reinforces the importance of citation to support all assertions of fact. New findings are presented for the history of biochemistry, nutrition, psychology, medicine, and the social sciences. Bio-chemistry papers and scientific news reports from the 1930’s seriously undermine a long standing truism that in the 1920s and 30s, bio-chemists, nutrition experts, public health policy makers, and E. Segar the creator of the newspaper comic strip Popeye were misled either by a decimal place error in 19th Century published research, or else by erroneous interpretation of 19th Century scientific findings, to exaggerate the iron content of spinach tenfold. Further, the failure to study original sources is evidenced in a multitude of completely erroneous publications claiming that these apocryphal errors caused Segar to choose spinach for Popeye’s super human strength.     James L. Holly, M.D. Popeye and Spinach - The Cartoons Had It Right By: James L. Holly, MD Popeye made his first public appearance January 17, 1929, in Elzie Segar's then 10-year- old comic strip, "Thimble Theatre," which originally revolved around Olive Oyl's family. Although he was introduced as a minor walk-on character, Popeye quickly "muskled" his way into the limelight and eclipsed the older characters to become the star of "Thimble Theatre." Popeye made the jump to the silver screen in a 1933 Betty Boop cartoon entitled, Popeye the Sailor from the Fleischer Studios. Popeye's spinach obsession began in the Thimble Theatre strip but became an indispensable plot device in his later animated adventures. Spinach capital Crystal City, Texas, erected a statue in 1937 to honor E.C. Segar and Popeye for their influence on America's eating habits, making Popeye the first cartoon character ever immortalized in public sculpture. The spinach growers credited Popeye with a 33 percent increase in U.S. spinach consumption — and saving the spinach industry in the 1930s! Nutrition and Popeye How did Popeye -- or better, the creators of Popeye -- know that spinach is one of the healthiest food on earth? The reality is that they didn't, but it is worth noting that for 70 years this cartoon has promoted the eating of a green, leafy vegetable which contributes more antioxidants, vitamins and other healthy elements to the diet of America's youth than any other food being promoted today on television or in the comics. Today's advertisements encourage unhealthy fast foods, sweetened cereals and other processed foods filled with dangerous "trans" fats.

    Archival Vagabonds: 20th-Century American Fiction and the Archive in Novelistic Practice Jean-Christophe Cloutier Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Jean-Christophe Cloutier All rights reserved ABSTRACT Archival Vagabonds: 20th-Century American Fiction and the Archive in Novelistic Practice Jean-Christophe Cloutier My research explores the interplay between the archival and aesthetic sensibilities of novelists not typically associated with archival practices—Claude McKay, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and Jack Kerouac. In juxtaposing their dual roles as public novelists and private archivists, I expose how their literary practices echo with core concepts in archival theory and position the novel as an alternative and superior site of historical preservation. Drawing on my experience as an archivist, I argue that the twentieth-century American novel’s concern with inclusivity, preservation and posterity parallels archival science’s changing approach to ephemera, arrangement, and diversity. The role of the archive in my work is both methodological and thematic: first, my own research incorporates these authors’ cache of research materials, correspondence, drafts, diaries, and aborted or unpublished pieces, obtained during my visits to their various repositories.     ''Cowell in Cartoon: A Pugilistic Pianist's Impact on Pop Culture'' Gary Galvan (ggalvan@uttedu) University of Florida Gainesville, FL, USA 32611-7900 January 2006 Cowell in Cartoon- Galvan/[email protected] Maverick American composer and pianist Henry Cowell (1897-1965) embarked on several highly acclaimed and controversial concert tours through Europe and the U.S. in the 1920s and 1930s and attained worldwide fame and notoriety with his percussive pianism. Controversy surrounding Cowell's techniques quickly manifested in the visual culture. First appearing in printed media along with written criticism, Cowell' s characteristic clubbing soon became a standard, if surprisingly tacit, part of animated cartoon sight gags. Raised in poverty by philosophical anarchists, largely self-taught, and steeped in Irish, Japanese, and Chinese folk music in the San Francisco Bay area, Cowell began experimenting with sound and delved quite literally into the piano. Reviews of Cowell's performances, which ranged from invective to Cowell demonstrating his "tone clusters" accolades, invariably focused on his unconventional and characteristic tone clusters - combinations of notes achieved by depressing immediately adjacent notes on the piano with an open hand, closed fist or entire forearm. An early and favorable New York Times report from 1922 offers a glimpse into Cowell' s biography and noteworthy social circle:1 Greenwich, Conn.
