BIRD REPORTS: CATALOGUE NO. 43 (SEPTEMBER 2016) INTRODUCTION Welcome to this month’s catalogue which details a large range of bird related journals available for sale. Although my original intention was to concentrate on bird reports, the stock has been extended to include national and local birdwatching related journals/publications. I hope you find something of interest. With regard to birdwatching related journals I estimate that around 50% of the major journals are now available in digital form (often online and free), and consequently I generally aim to keep a low but hopefully sufficient level of stocks. Collectors with long memories may recall that, in the pre-digital age, bound copies of British Birds were sold by David & Doreen Morgan at £30 each but I now offer the same for £10-£12 each, which I believe is competitive in the current market. Sadly, this also means that I am unable to make overly generous offers to anyone wanting to sell such journals (but don’t let this put you off getting in touch). As mentioned in earlier versions of my catalogue, I get very disappointed when I hear of bird reports and journals going in the bin or skip; the dreaded ‘skip’ word was again used in conversation recently (Apr 16)! If you find yourself in this situation or hear of such, please don’t hesitate to contact me as I’m always happy to cover postage or travel a reasonable distance/meet you halfway etc. In terms of payment, I am usually content to pay between 75p and £1 on average for say box-loads/package loads of non-specific bird reports (plus postage). I stress the word ‘average’ here, as many lots often include reports of which some I already hold maybe 11-12 copies (16 in one case!). If a list of available reports can be provided I am very willing to provide a specific offer price, bearing in mind postal charges. Alternatively, all donations are also welcome e.g. shelf clearances, and I have made a number of donations to birding groups when payment was not required by the disposer. In a similar vein, I also make regular donations of reports/journals to worthy causes, birding Groups, University students and young local birders e.g. 77 years’ worth of BTO Bird Study donated to students/young local birders in recent months. In short, I make every effort to ensure that unwanted publications go to a ‘good home’ and are put to good use. I welcome contact from anyone wishing to dispose of any spare bird reports or to leave details of any particular wants. Best regards, Steve Holliday [email protected] 2 Larriston Place, Cramlington, Northumberland NE23 8ER Tel 01670 731963 (eve’s/weekends) REQUEST: I am aware of the following bird reports now being produced on an online basis only i.e. no longer in paper form: Moray & Nairn 2013>, Pembrokeshire 2012>, Scarborough 2013> and Skokholm 2013>. If you are aware of any others I’d appreciate an email, many thanks. NEW SERVICE: I appreciate that some contacts are only seeking to read a back paper in a bird report or perhaps a paper in one of the various journals, as opposed to making a purchase. Digital technology makes it fairly easy to copy and email an article these days and I’m happy to do this on an ad hoc basis (within reason/copyright rules) for the foreseeable future, at no charge. Apart from what’s in my Catalogue below, I do also have my own collection of bird reports plus extensive runs of British Birds, The Naturalist [YNU], the North Western Naturalist and have recently started to make inroads into The Zoologist! Please feel free to ask… TERMS Condition: All reports will be in good second-hand condition or better, unless stated otherwise. Inevitably, a few may have an owner’s name inked or stamped inside, perhaps rusty staples for much older items, but will still be clean and useful for reference. Any which are damaged or particularly unclean I shall point this out and adjust the price when ordering. If you are particularly keen on items in near-mint condition, please make this clear. Payment: Payment on receipt please i.e. once you have confirmed everything is OK (except for customers overseas and orders over £100). Please do not send payment with your order. Any exchange or bank charges and postal costs (plus insurance if requested) will be charged at cost. Where possible, I use a courier service (e.g. My Hermes) which is significantly cheaper than other methods e.g. for a 2kg-5kg parcel - Hermes £5.95, Parcelforce £12.98+ [as at June 2016]. Orders for bird reports/journals over £50 attract a 5% discount and orders over £100 a 10% discount. An invoice will be included with any postal deliveries and payment should be made asap upon receipt. Payment details (cheque, online and PayPal) are included when journals are posted out. Returns: If, for whatever reason, you are unhappy with the reports I have posted please let me know and we’ll work something out. Wants: Please feel free to send me your wants list for future reference and without obligation to purchase. I will maintain a wants list and contact collectors on a first come first served basis. Surplus items: I am always interested in receiving any free items (rather than hear of them being discarded) or purchasing certain items which may be surplus to your requirements. I will of course cover any postage costs. Please send me a full description (including condition) and details of the price required.
