Sherry Middaugh, Kim Moore, Kate Hunter and Andra Marmark TEAM SHERRY MIDDAUGH HAS THIRD WIN – 2006, 2004 & 2001 SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO WOMEN’S CHARITY CASHSPIEL The 10th Annual Southwestern Ontario Women’s Charity Cashspiel started on Friday, October 13th with a very strong field of 32 national and international women curling teams. The Cashspiel showcased world class women’s curling while supporting local initiatives in breast cancer research and care through the London Regional Center Program. The Celebrity Funspiel gave regular curlers the opportunity to have fun curling with the Pros on Thursday night at Highland Curling Club raising over $11,000. The Silent Auction was held at St. Thomas Curling Club. Thanks to over 50 generous donations and those who took part in the silent auction, the proceeds will support the Care and Cure of Breast Cancer. As the Cashspiel progressed and teams were eliminated, Monday’s final was the best the event has seen. The Sherry Middaugh team from Coldwater and Patti Lank team from Niagara Falls, New York, put on a 3½ hour thriller at the London Curling Club…There were triple and double takeouts, negotiating narrow ports time and time again. Team Middaugh won in the 11th end, taking home $11,000 and was presented with the Donna Arnold Memorial Trophy. The Cashspiel was a qualifying event for the Canada Cup of Curling and a World Curling Tour Event. Buchanan, known as “the treat lady,” drove her last bus load of kids on Fri- day, Dec. 18 before embarking on re- tirement. Her husband, Bruce, was the one who put the wheels in motion for Bu- chanan’s nearly 28-year career. He became a bus driver while Gwen was a stay-at-home mom with three kids. At the time, he encouraged his wife to become certifi ed as a bus driver in case he needed her to fi ll in for him while he dealt with matters on the family’s cattle and grain farm near Argyle. Gwen got her licence and became busy with the Interlake School Divi- sion, driving 47 of 52 routes as a spare bus driver over the years.

  • March 2020 Events a MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT
1 Upcoming St Thomas Curling Club News March 2020 Events A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Where to start, well let’s just say it’s been a year. While I believe that everything we had planned went very smoothly on the surface it was not without its challenges. It was sort of like a swim- ming duck. All looks very peaceful on the surface but underwa- ter things were moving at a furious pace. Just a few weeks before the Provincials, I was called into the Annual kitchen by the ladies league and informed that the dishwasher General was making funny sounds. A service call resulted in the information that a new pump was required for the dishwasher Meeting and it might seize and stop working at any time. A new pump Date and Time was ordered and it was installed only days prior to the Seniors. During the installation a rusted locking nut was discovered and, To be announced of course, it broke during installation. The $1.28 part is not stocked and so it had to be overnight shipped to the installer and the installation was finished mere hours before the Seniors began. Crisis averted. The club hosted its second Tier 55 Bonspiel of the year in January and a full complement of 24 teams from SW Ontario competed. The Senior Men’s Kitchen Krew handled the meals and this event went off without a hitch. The land sale has progressed smoothly and has passed every stage of approval from City Committee to City Council to area residents.
