  • Letter from the President
VARSITY O 2019 FALL NEWS LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Fellow Varsity O Members, Happy Fall! Autumn officially means many things: students back on The Ohio State campus, the crisp air with crunchy leaves beneath each step, our fall-sport Buckeyes taking their respective fields and courts, Saturdays in The SHOE, and… Varsity O’s most exciting time of year! In early September, we celebrated our 42nd year of The Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame. Our incredible inductees were legends in their sport, Olympic medalists, international icons, and can I just say, “Amazing human beings that were fun, kind, humble, and gracious to be awarded with such prestige!” As we roll into October, I want to remind all of you of our Homecoming Tailgate which will be at the French Fieldhouse on October 5th from 4-7pm prior to the Michigan State game. This is a great opportunity to join Varsity O and fellow Buckeyes for a food buffet, cash-bar, music, corn-hole, photo booth, and other fun surprises we have planned. We will also be celebrating our Jim Jones Career Achievement Award and Varsity O Loyalty award winners as well! Through the 2019-2020 academic year, the University is celebrating its storied and proud history of 150 years. We are calling it, “The Sesquicentennial Year of Celebration”. And although our Athletic Department does not date quite that far back, certainly the contributions and traditions of OSU Athletics has played a storied role in the history of the BEST university in the country. Since the earliest days, OSU athletes have inspired millions across the globe, and have delivered some of the most historic and thrilling moments in collegiate sports.

  • The Ohio Sky Survey and Other Radio Surveys
Vistas in Astronomy, Vol. 20, pp. 445-474. Pergamon Press, 1977. Printed in Great Britain. THE OHIO SKY SURVEY AND OTHER RADIO SURVEYS John D. Kraus Ohio State University Radio Observatory Colombus, Ohio ABSTRACT Section I indicates the importance of astronomical surveys and comments on some of the earliest radio surveys. Section II describes the Ohio Sky Survey which totals over 19,0OO radio sources at 1415 MHz. Methods of observation, data reduction and analyses of reliability and com- pleteness are considered. Section III discusses the special Ohio sources with centimeter-enhanced (CE) spectra, including ones of the BL Lac type such as OJ287 and ones with high redshlft such as OH471 and OQ172. Section IV relates the Ohio survey to other surveys, including data on other large surveys such as the Cambridge and Parkes surveys. Source counts are considered and statistics presented on the numbers of radio sources, identifications and radio astronomers. The last section, V, treats source nomenclature and the need for a single perpetual epoch. I. INTRODUCTION Progress in astronomy is dependent on surveys, optical, radio, X-ray, and infra-red. Thus, the National Geographic Society-Palomar Observatory Sky Survey of the early 1950s has been of enormous importance. This survey with the 1.2 m Schmidt telescope was done to provide the information necessary to properly utilize the larger 5 m (200 inch) telescope but its use- fulness has far exceeded anything envisioned originally. The many radio surveys are also important. They facilitate studies of individual sources and associations and make for efficient use of large instruments.

These groups play a key role in moving our libraries forward and accomplishing the goals set forth in our strategic plan. I want to thank each of you who volunteered for your willingness to serve the Libraries in this additional capacity. Know that the work carried out by each of these groups and committees is vital and appreciated. Here are the committee appointments for 2015: https://library.osu.edu/document- registry/docs/397. The coming year marks the fourth year of the new committee structure established by the Executive Committee for University Libraries. The Executive Committee has reviewed each committee and working group, revised committee charges if needed and added goals for 2015. The Committee Chair and Member Responsibilities document was prepared to outline expectations and responsibilities for both committee chairs and members. I encourage you to review it before you begin your work. I look forward to the good work of our committees as we move forward on the five strategic planning themes: services, collections, library as an intellectual crossroads, infrastructure, and innovative leadership. In actuality, this thesis is a synthesis of efforts, not only by those whose names appear on the introduc- tion and the articles, but also many others who have contributed indirectly, since no man is an island after all. Many of these numerous contributors will be left out by necessity of brevity, but for these unnamed contributions I am no less grateful. Foremost, I extend my gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Mauri Val- tonen. He presented me with the topic of my research, contributed sig- nificantly to the articles, and advised me whenever I had misunderstood something, had a gap in my knowledge or had blundered something in general.
