The one mainstay character in Bullets is Agent Graves, a high-level manipulator waging a personal war against a group called The Trust. Graves hand-select individuals and provides them with a golden opportunity -- he gives them untraceable bullets, puts them above the law. His reasons are often unclear, but as the lengthy tale has progressed, Agent Graves' manipulations have become slightly more apparent. And though he is the man with the golden offer, Graves is often on the periphery of the stories told. Instead, Azzarello leaps from character to character, examining what happens when someone is given a license to kill. This is perhaps the most important collection 100 Bullets: The Hard Way Volume 08, as the history of the Trust is finally revealed and one of the better stories, the origin of Wylie Times is revealed. Times is given that magic briefcase full of untraceable bullets by Mr. Graves and told the reason for all his life's 100 Bullets: The Hard Way Volume 08 is a man named Shepherd. Wylie lost the love of his life and embarks on a path of revenge, shooting only when it counts, making certain not to waste a single bullet. Dipping in and out of flashbacks, The Hard Way is a perfect example of what makes Bullets one of the greatest books on the shelf. With New Orleans as the backdrop, this sad tale of revenge and regret is moody, explosive and introspective. It's neo-noir infused with the soul of Bourbon Street jazz. Unlike any other noir, Bullets shies away from any narrative. Captions are used only to carry dialogue, never to impart inner monologue. Eduardo Risso's art is evocative of the locale, negating the need to time-stamp or label scenes, even flashbacks are left without the reflection normally seen in comics, novels and film. The characters of Bullets are about action 100 Bullets: The Hard Way Volume 08 as such, they communicate their thoughts in words, expressions and gunshots. Though bubbles and clever captions are obsolete in the path of Bullets. While Azzarello's direction and dialogue are worthy of the praise given, Risso's art is a vital part of the story. With so many characters slipping in and out of flashbacks and no captions for guidance, Azzarello is dependant on Risso to make the transitions work. Every character is distinct, from face to posture to body type and as flash backs come, hairstyles and even dress styles change. Without Risso providing these visual anchors, it would be easy to get lost in Azzarello's fast-paced story. It's smooth, has a kick, but is also full of melancholy. Those who've never read Bullets may have a hard time jumping in so late. Azzarello's writing assumes you're already used to the pacing and the conceit of the tale. Instead, new readers should start from the beginnings with First Shot, Last Call. Only by starting from book one can you fully appreciate the tangled web of conspiracies, lies and betrayals that string together such a large pool of characters. Pulling the trigger 'til it goes "click. Brian Azzarello's Bullets is one of the most celebrated books of the past 100 Bullets: The Hard Way Volume 08 and with good reason. The violent, curse-filled noir comic is brilliantly bloody and soaked in moral ambiguity. Where most writers would feel the need to ape Frank 100 Bullets: The Hard Way Volume 08 Sin City or the work of Philip Marlowe or Raymond Chandler, Azzarello forges new ground in noir to create a contemporary tale with it's own brutal language. If crime fiction is your cup of tea, drink up. Was this article informative? YES NO. In This Article. Franchises: Bullets. Genres: Action. Platforms: Print.
