Yet master documentary maker Michael Pilz chose for duration and circumlocution in his portrait of Beckett dir- ector Jack Garfein. Because groping and searching are also qualities. The footage was shot in September 1988. It was only recently that the film maker found the peace and the courage to cut material that he probably didn't want to cut at all at first. In that sense the film is concise after all. The famous Czech-born American theatre maker Jack Gar- fein (1930) worked as a guest director in Vienna, in George Tabori's theatre Der Kreis. Garfein rehearsed three late plays by Samuel Beckett with the company attached to the theatre.

I would like to extend my gratitude to my thesis advisor, Professor Doutor José Duarte, for his patience and understanding throughout the years, until I was finally able to close this chapter of my life. My gratitude also goes to my co-advisor, Professora Doutora Teresa Cid, for her contribute and for accepting be a part of this work.

Theatre on Trial: Staging Postwar Justice in the United States and Germany Minou Arjomand SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Minou Arjomand All rights reserved ABSTRACT Theatre on Trial: Staging Postwar Justice in the United States and Germany Minou Arjomand This dissertation studies the interchange between political theatre and postwar political trials. I argue that to an extraordinary extent, theatre history in this period is inextricable from trial history. Through close archival study of mid-century theatre productions including Bertolt Brecht’s 1954 production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle and the fifteen simultaneous premiere productions of Peter Weiss’s The Investigation in 1965, I show how directors and playwrights looked to legal trials in order to develop and articulate theories of epic and documentary theatre, and how this new theatre in turn sought to effect justice in ways that trials alone could not. • A Wild Girl of Eighty-Eight
Column door Loek Zonneveld, voorgedragen tijdens HALf6 op 12 mei 2015. A wild girl … eighty-eight years young [ a small remembrance Judith Malina ] In art, in theater avantgarde-groups come and go like the seasons. Some of their founders stay very long. One of them was Judith Malina. She was the founding-mother of the Living Theater. Small and skinny, that’s what she was in the roaring sixties, some fifty years ago now. But my god, what a sound she produced! Her voice was far-reaching like a thunderstorm. Whispering, she could fill the intimate space of the Doelenzaal at the Kloveniersburgwal, just around the corner. She could also make a big theatre-building like Carré tremble on all its foundations. That vulcanic voice of hers, was part of the urgency and the anger in the productions of ‘her’ Living Theater. With her lifelong companion, the painter, designer, director and actor Julian Beck, she was the living soul of ‘the Living’. Julian Beck was the born New Yorker of the two. She came from the German town of Kiel, and she fled, with her jewish family, for the Hitler-terror, and went to America. Julian Beck and Judith Malina met for the first time at the Dramatic Workshop, a New York studio founded in the forties by the German expressionist and exiled theatermaker Erwin Piscator. Marlon Brando was a pupil there, and so was Harry Belafonte, and Tenessee Williams. Stella Adler was a teacher there, and so was Lee Strasberg, and the German composer Hanns Eisler. During their study at the Piscator-workshop, in 1947, Julian Beck and Judith Malina founded the Living Theater, a performance collective, a solid group, making physical theater, based on the principals and thoughts of Antonin Artaud.

  • Did You Know? Harry Belafonte Has Jewish Blood
DID YOU KNOW? HARRY BELAFONTE HAS JEWISH BLOOD Researched by George Plohn Harry Belafonte, the ever popular singer of the ‘Matilda’ song fame was born Harold George Bellanfanti, Jr. on March 1, 1927, in Harlem, New York, the son of Melvine (née Love), a dressmaker and a house cleaner of Jamaican descent, and Harold George Bellanfanti, Sr., a Martiniquan who worked as a cook in the British Royal Navy. His mother was born in Jamaica, the child of a Scottish white mother and a black father. His father also was born in Jamaica, the child of a black mother and a Dutch Jewish father of Sephardi origin. This is what Harry said about his Jewish grandfather, whom he never met: “a white Dutch Jew who drifted over to the islands after chasing gold and diamonds, with no luck at all”. From 1932 to 1940, Harry was sent to live with one of his grandmothers in her native country of Jamaica. When he returned to New York City, he attended George Washington High School after which he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served in the Pacific during the end of World War II. After being discharged from the service, Belafonte returned to New York City. He seemed directionless for a time, working a series of odd jobs, such as a janitor's assistant, when a tenant gave him, as a gratuity, two tickets to see the American Negro Theater. He fell in love with the art form and also met there Sidney Poitier. The financially struggling pair regularly used to purchase a single seat to local plays, trading places in between acts, after informing the other about the progression of the play.

INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.
