GOT DRUGS? Of course you do. What you don’t have is a safe, convenient way to dispose of all those unused, unwanted, expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications on a regular basis . . . till now. National Prescription Take-Back Day is this Saturday, April 26 between 10 am and 2 pm at the Birdsall-Fagan Police/Court Facility at 86-88 Spring Street in Ossining between to turn in your unwanted meds. It will only take a few minutes of your time and you can safely dispose of unwanted prescription medications, patches, ointments, drug samples, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and pet medications. Many Americans are not aware that unused or expired medicines are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to abuse of these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. You can play an important role in keeping these drugs off the street, out of our water supply, away from our wildlife, and most important, unavailable to our children. Here’s what you can do: 1. Clean out your medicine chest today and gather all unused, expired, unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. Leave them in the original container or bottle if possible; obscure or remove any personally identifying information on the packaging. 2. Bring them to the Take-Back collection location at 86-88 Spring Street this Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. up till 2 p.m. Clean out your medicine chest on a regular basis and drop any unwanted drugs at the Ossining Police Station MedReturn. In supp ort of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s prescription take-back initiative, Ossining has introduced a MedReturn Drug Collection Unit, permanently installed inside the Ossining Village Police Department’s front door at 88 Spring Street. If you cannot make it to the drug/court facility this Saturday, the MedReturn unit is there for you, secure and anonymous, 24/7 to collect unwanted drugs and make sure they are disposed of properly before they can be misused. The MedReturn Drug Collection Unit is an initiative of the Ossining Communities That Care Coalition (CTC) and the Village of Ossining Police Department. It was funded by a Drug- Free Community grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). CTC is a coalition of concerned individuals and diverse community organizations whose goal is to reduce the use of alcohol and drugs in Ossining and prevent underage drinking. The Ossining Bicentennial Committee is pleased to announce that The Ossining Story: A Bicentennial Celebration 1813–2013 is now available for purchase. This special-edition souvenir journal commemorates Ossining’s 200th birthday, honoring its past and present. Ossining became the first incorporated village in Westchester County in 1813, when it was still known as Sing Sing. The journal is the culmination of the work of many Ossining residents who cherish our village’s history. Its managing editor, Martha Mesiti, Town Historian and a lifelong resident, reached out to the organizations that comprise Ossining’s vibrant community to share their histories. Over 60 groups responded, including the Police and Fire Departments, houses of worship, educational groups, military groups, historical organizations, social and service groups, and more. Mesiti also commissioned articles of historic interest from local authors and historians, covering such topics as the village’s unique architecture, Sing Sing marble, Sing Sing prison, and historic personalities like the Old Leather Man. The 160-page book is only $10 a copy, and will be available at all Bicentennial events. In addition you can pick up your copy at the Ossining Municipal Building (16 Croton Ave.), Ossining Public Library (53 Croton Ave.), Joseph G. Caputo Community Center (95 Broadway), and the Dorsey Funeral Home (14 Emwilton Pl.). Copies may also be purchased online at the Village of Ossining Web site www.villageofossining.org and www.CelebrateOssining.org.
