  • How American Idol Constructs Celebrity, Collective Identity, and American Discourses
AMERICAN IDEAL: HOW AMERICAN IDOL CONSTRUCTS CELEBRITY, COLLECTIVE IDENTITY, AND AMERICAN DISCOURSES A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Amanda Scheiner McClain May, 2010 i © Copyright 2010 by Amanda Scheiner McClain All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a three-pronged study examining American themes, celebrity, and collective identity associated with the television program American Idol. The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself.

North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources State Historic Preservation Office Ramona M. Bartos, Administrator Governor Roy Cooper Secretary D. Reid Wilson April 29, 2021 MEMORANDUM TO: Kate Husband, Architectural Historian [email protected] NCDOT Environmental Analysis Unit Architectural History Group FROM: Renee Gledhill-Earley Environmental Review Coordinator SUBJECT: Replace Bridge No. 184 over Cabriel Creek on SR 1355 (Bailey Street), Mars Hill, PA 19-05-0025, Madison County, ER 21-0935 Thank you for your April 6, 2021, memorandum forwarding the Historic Structures Survey Report for the above-referenced undertaking. We have reviewed the report and offer the following comments. MD0052 (Mars Hill College Historic District) Though not formally reevaluated in the report, the consultant implies through the evaluation of the Chambers Gymnasium and Harrell Pool that the Mars Hill College Historic District (MD0052), which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 for its significance under Criteria A, B, and C, remains eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. We concur. MD0315 (Chambers Gymnasium & Harrell Pool) We concur that the Chambers Gymnasium and Harrell Pool (MD0315) is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as an expansion of and contributing resource within the existing Mars Hill College Historic District. The report appears to contain a discrepancy about the significance of the resource to the district. The table of evaluated resources on page 1-1 indicates that the Chambers Gymnasium and Harrell Pool are significant under Criterion A only, while the Evaluation on page 4-35 suggests that it is significant under Criteria A and C.

  • Spring Undergraduate Research Forum
Spring Undergraduate Research Forum Welcome to SURF 2020 The 27th Annual Celebration of Achievements in Undergraduate Research at Elon University The Spring Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF) is a time each year when we suspend our other campus activities to celebrate the academically-centered creative endeavors and research efforts of Elon’s students. However, due to COVID-19, we are not able to hold SURF in-person and on-campus this year. Instead, we have prepared this abstract book in recognition of all of the hard work of the undergraduate researchers and faculty mentors. This year, SURF was scheduled to have 247 presentations and two interdisciplinary symposia named “Environmental Contexts of Development” and “Profiling South Asia: Knowledge, Representation, and Self-Understanding in Global Contexts”. Students from Williams High School, Burlington, NC, originally planned to join us by presenting their two posters. Each SURF abstract was reviewed by two Elon faculty members with disciplinary expertise. SURF is usually a part of CELEBRATE! – a weeklong series of events that bring to light our students’ wonderful academic and creative pursuits. Although we will not be able to gather on campus to support the student presenters and performers this year, let’s celebrate their accomplishments through this abstract book. In this collection of abstracts, students share the joy of exploration and discovery that are the hallmarks of an intellectual community. We want to extend our deep appreciation to the entire campus community for being flexible about SURF this year. Thank you for your strong support and commitment to undergraduate research and mentoring. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM ADVISORY COMMITTEE Dr.
