Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly included in studies to monitor the effects of human and natural stresses on marine and estuarine ecosystems. There are several reasons for this. Macroinvertebrates (here defined as animals retained on a 0.5-mm mesh sieve) are abundant in most coastal and estuarine sediments, typically on the order of 103 to 104 per meter squared. Benthic communities are typically composed of many taxa from different phyla, and quantitative measures of community diversity (e.g., Rosenberg et al. 2004) and the relative abundance of animals with different feeding behaviors (e.g., Weisberg et al. 1997, Pelletier et al. 2010), can be used to evaluate ecosystem health. Because most benthic invertebrates are sedentary as adults, they function as integrators, over periods of months to years, of the properties of their environment. -

Postal 42494; 04299-970 São Paulo, SP, Brazil; [email protected] Abstract Columbella costa, a new species from off Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is described. This new species is characterized by its obesity; high spire; smooth, glossy surface; and by a deeper water habitat of 30-35 m. This is the second species of the genus found off the Brazilian coast and the only one occurring in its bathymetric range. Key Words: Columbella costa, new species, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, deep waters. Resumo Columbella costa, uma espécie nova, é descrita para a região ao largo de Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro. A espécie nova é caracterizada pela altura e obesidade da espira, superfície brilhante e lisa e pelo habitat mais profundo (30-35 m). Reguero and Raz-Guzmán: Molluscs (Mollusca: Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Polyplacophora) of Lagu Gulf of Mexico Science, 2018(1), pp. 32–55 Molluscs (Mollusca: Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Polyplacophora) of Laguna Madre, Tamaulipas, Mexico: Spatial and Temporal Distribution MARTHA REGUERO AND ANDREA RAZ-GUZMA´ N Molluscs were collected in Laguna Madre from seagrass beds, macroalgae, and bare substrates with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl. The species list includes 96 species and 48 families. Six species are dominant (Bittiolum varium, Costoanachis semiplicata, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Chione cancellata, and Mulinia lateralis) and 25 are commercially important (e.g., Strombus alatus, Busycoarctum coarctatum, Triplofusus giganteus, Anadara transversa, Noetia ponderosa, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Argopecten irradians, Argopecten gibbus, Chione cancellata, Mercenaria campechiensis, and Rangia flexuosa). -

A. 1 1 – Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora Recebido em: 10/11/14 Aceito em: 04/05/15 Publicado em: 30/06/15 RESUMO O presente trabalho apresenta uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa da abundância e riqueza da fauna bentônica de gastrópodes e bivalvos nos bancos de Perna perna dos costões rochosos da praia Quitiba, localizada ao sul do Estado do Espírito Santo. As coletas foram realizadas no período da manhã, durante a baixamar de uma maré de sizígia nos dias 9 de março e 16 de novembro de 2013, totalizando seis coletas. Para análise da abundância de recrutas, foram feitas raspagens destrutivas, eqüidistantes cerca 20 a 30 m entre si, utilizando quadrados de 20 X 20 cm nos bancos de P. perna , sendo as amostras inseridas no interior de sacos vedado para a retenção do macrozoobentos. Foram feitas análises referentes à riqueza baseadas no Índice de Margalef e de diversidade no índice de Shannon-Wiener, grau de constância, dos grupos tróficos e do índice de importância trófica. As classes Bivalvia e Gastropoda foram representadas por 18 famílias, 21 gêneros e 16 espécies. A classe Gastropoda representou 76,2% das espécies encontradas, enquanto Bivalvia representou 31,2%. -

Aronson Abstract Marine death assemblages typically reflect the ecological and environmental signatures of the settings in which they are deposited. Comparatively little is known, however, about the effects of environmental change on death assemblages or with what acuity past changes might be preserved, by proxy, in sedimentary deposits. This study assesses the response of present-day molluscan death assemblages, both among surface sediments and stratigraphically, to an instance of anthropogenic environmental change along a carbonate bank. Additionally, I investigate whether body size changes can be recognized among death assemblages as a component of a broader response to changing environmental conditions. -

Tel: +056-9-86460401; E-mail address: [email protected] Marine mollusks from northern Chile and from the Región de Atacama in particular have been sparsely documented, and only a few works have reviewed the area (see Araya & Araya, 2015; Labrín et al. 2015; Araya & Valdés 2016). Mollusks from deep water and offshore areas are one of the least known groups and, apart from some classic works from the 19th century, only McLean (1970), Bernard (1983), Véliz and Vásquez (2000), Fraussen & Haddorn (2000), Houart (2003), Vilvens & Sellanes (2010), and Araya (2013) have included deep-water molluscan species from northern Chile. Among the Neogastropoda, the Columbellidae constitute a quite diverse and well-distributed family of small snails, with about seven hundred extant species distributed in 70 genera (deMaintenon, 2014). -

Introduction:The deep-water species ofMitrella Risso, 1826 from the Caribbean area are poorly represented. The first deep-waterMitrella was only discovered in 2006 by D. Lamy and described asM. tosatoi Monsecour & Monsecour, 2006, based on a single specimen (now in MNHN). Since then, no further material had become available, until D. Lamy and P. de Jaham found 7 more specimens belonging to this genus: two of them areMitrella tosatoi, the remaining 5 specimens clearly belong to a yet undescribed species. November-December, 2018_____________________________________________________Volume 59 (no. 6) Upcoming meetings The November meeting of the Jacksonville Shell Club (JSC) will be held at the usual venue, the Southeast Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library <http://www.yelp.com/biz/jacksonville-public-library-southeast- regional-jacksonville>, on the third Thursday (the 15th) in Function Room D at 7:00 PM. Thanksgiving necessitated this annual JSC exception several decades ago forcing the club to meet on the third Thursday of this month rather than the customary fourth. We’re in for a treat on the ocassion as Rick Edwards, travelling with his lovely wife, Roz, has recently returned from a trip to Ecuador and Peru, notably including a tour of the Galápagos Islands. Although shell collectng is strictly forbidden, Rick and Roz were able to otherwise appreciate many species of marine mollusks and chronicle them in situ. A signficant proportion of the the Galapagan marine malacofauna is endemic, and another share is compposed on Indo-West Pacific interlopers. Thus the mix is quite unlike the more familiar continental Panamic Province assemblages. Harry Lee will provide a look at some classic shell rarities associated with the islands. These were obtaned by dredging in a bygone era when such activities were licit, so beware of an aura of nostalgia in the room. Two such classic shells are those above: Sveltia gladiator (R. Petit, 1976) above L and Sthenorhytis turbina (Dall, 1908) above R. The December JSC meeting will be in the field on Saturday the 22nd. Paul Jones [[email protected]; (904) 347-7254] has arranged with Connie of Tidewater Tours, Cedar Key, a three-hour "drop off" shelling trip to a shoal off Seahorse Key, about five miles offshore.
