  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

The old Stephen F. Austin Hotel, where I stayed for the first five years at the tournament was remodeled and renamed. The cost became outrageous there, so we no longer enjoyed staying downtown. Today the Hotel is called InterContinental Stephen F. Austin. Visiting Sixth street became popular and I continued to eat at the Waterloo Ice House. The main attraction in those days was playing at Gregory Gym on the campus of U.T. We always had great pickup games at the student activity center, located right next to Gregory. Jogging was also another passion of mine. Town Lake provided great running trails just south of downtown Austin. Coaching clinics became the norm, as I continued to learn the game. Great times. The person who had the greatest impact on my life was my brother-in-law. This book is dedicated to him. At the age of 10, he began coming over to the house dating my older sister. He was like a family member. For the next twenty years he influenced all aspects of my life.

  • Brooklyn Nets Fire Head Coach Avery Johnson. Why?
Brooklyn Nets Fire Head Coach Avery Johnson. Why? Author : Robert D. Cobb BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Hello Brooklyn! In the case of the man known as "The Little General" the trademark Brooklyn Bridge is already in his proverbial rearview mirror. In a move that shocked many, The Brooklyn Nets fired head coach Avery Johnson after roughly two and a quarter seasons with the team early Thursday. The move came after the Nets would lose on Christmas Day to the Boston Celtics 93-76 and to the Milwaukee Bucks, 108-93. Assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo has been promoted to interim head coach in Johnson's place. The Nets began their inaugural season in Brooklyn on a high note as they started the season 11-4. However, things have taken a turn for the worse this month for the team as they are only 3-10 in December and have fallen far short of expectations since moving into the new Barclays Center this season. "The Nets ownership would like to express thanks to Avery for his efforts and to wish him every success in the future," principal owner Mikhail Prokhorov said on the firing. It is unknown which direction the Nets will go from here as far as the search for a new head coach goes, however the team may be able to turn the corner and gain some much-needed momentum going forward as a result of this abrupt decision. Early reports to replace Johnson are Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, Houston Rockets assistant head coach Kelvin Sampson and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy.
