THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal. -

NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. SPURS STEPPING UP, PISTONS AREN't San Antonio Is Just Playing
SPURS STEPPING UP, PISTONS AREN’T San Antonio is just playing its normal game, and the Pistons are not handling them. One of the characteristics of a championship team, especially in playoff situations, is that someone steps up big and hits double their usual average, as both Bruce Bowen and Robert Horry did yesterday. Horry made the sort of contribution he’s been making for years, playing strong defense, going for loose balls, disrupting the outlet pass. If Horry and Bowen as well as Manu Ginobili are hitting from outside, the Pistons are in trouble. The Spurs already have three strong scoring options in Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Ginobili, but when they add a fourth and fifth, how are you going to stop them? The Pistons have a reputation as a strong defensive team, but their individual defense has not seemed that good to me, because they’re not really taking the Spurs out of their game. The Spurs have spread their offense so they have open lanes to the basket and they have open shots from outside. They’ve been patient, they’ve made crisp passes and yesterday they didn’t allow themselves to be forced into turnovers. When a team has both its inside and outside games working, and they’re shutting you down at the other end of the court, you’re in trouble. The Pistons did a better job Sunday of creating movement and involving their big men in the offense, but they still aren’t doing two things I think they need to do in order to win: one, they have to make Tim Duncan guard Rasheed Wallace down low, and two, they have to get Ben Wallace going to the basket. -

Cruz Is Most Pop Pular Polit Tician in T Exas
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 17, 2014 INTERVIEWS: Tom Jensen 919-744-6312 IF YOU HAVE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL [email protected], OR CONSULT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH OF THE PRESS RELEASE Cruz is most popular polittician in Texas Raleigi h, N.C. – PPP's newest Texas poll makes it pretty clear thhat when it comes to politicians Ted Cruz is the top dog in the state. Cruz has a better net approval rating than both Rick Perry and John Cornyn at +12, with 47% of voters approving of him to 35% who disapprove. Cruz also continues to lead the Republican primary field for President in the state with 25% to 14% for Jeb Bush, 10% each for Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul, and Rick Perry, 5% for Chris Christie and Paul Ryan, and 4% for Bobbby Jindal and Marco Rubio. Perry's approval numbers may be on the rise, but there's still little appetite for a repeat White House bid from him among voters in the state. Only 23% think he should run in 2016, compared to 66% who think he should sit it out. Even among GOP priimary voters only 34% think he should make another bid with 52% dissenting. Republicans do, by a 46/38 spread, want Ted Cruz to seek the Presidency in 2016 but aamong all voters only 32% think he should make a bid to 54% who say no. “Texas voters don’t want either Ted Cruz or Rick Perrry to run for President in 2016,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. -

A Virgin Islander is the 8th Best Basketball Player of All Time, According to ESPN Pdf Published On May 16, 2020 06:22 AM Robert Moore | May 16, 2020 06:22:16 AM 0 Tim Duncan By ESPN “Let’s just call [Tim Duncan] the greatest franchise player in the modern game. The most dependable dude to build an NBA title contender around,” ESPN.com says in its #NBArank announcement released Friday. The sports network assembled a ballot of the 150 greatest basketball players ever. And then an expert panel voted on thousands of head-to-head matchups based on career value and peak performance. Mr. Duncan — The Big Fundamental — easily cracked the top 10 for his power-forward days with the San Antonio Spurs, going back to 1997. With five championships, rock solid stats and a boat-load of honors, “... Duncan is the only player over the past 35 years to be named First-Team All-NBA as a rookie... At the age of 38, he tied Kareem Abdul-Jabber as the oldest player to be named to an All-NBA team." ESPN Senior Writer Marc Stein gave praise to Mr. Duncan this way: “Some see him as the greatest power forward who ever lived. Others scoff at the idea that he should ever be listed as anything other than a center. “Allow us to clear this up for you. Tim Duncan? Let's just call him the greatest franchise player in the modern game. “The most dependable dude to build an NBA title contender around. Maybe the best teammate, too.
