Stinneford Family of Wells, Maine First Generation 1. William STINNAFORD was born about 1779 in , , England and died after Jun 1860 in Wells, York, ME. Possibly the William Staniford/Stanford born 26 March 1777 in Ipswich MA to Capt. Jeremiah who md Mary Potter, but that William died 2 months later. See also notes for William Jr 1809. See also 1850 census note below. Name is spelled Stinford on his mar-rec p125/135; all children are spelled Stinnaford on his family register in Wells VR p232; Stenford or Steneford on his ch d-recs. Daughter Eleanor Stinnaford d at age 1 p286. 1850 Wells census York 165: William Staniford 70 born England caulker (boats), Hannah 69 b Wells ME. He died on the poor farm in Wells on Rt 109. 1860 Wells census lists him in the Wells Alms House as William Stinaford 81 pauper b Mass. Wells Hist Soc says there are no marked graves or record of who is buried there. William Stinford m Hannah Cain at the First Church of Wells Congregational, by Rev Moses Hemenway. Walk towards the gravel pit area and take the path to the left up the hill and the small graveyard is on the left. I found and cleaned the lot ca 1990 when I lived just up the road. This is near the intersection of Sanford, Wells, and North Berwick. 1850 Wells census Hannah is 39 in Ann and Bradbury Perkins family. York County Probate File 18061. Hannah Stinaford of Wells. Written May 23, 1851. All property to John B Stevens of Dover NH and Ann M Perkins. Probated Aug 4, 1851 North Berwick. witnesses Joseph Perkins, Hollis Perkins, and ? Perkins. "I William Stinaford the father of Hannah Stinnaford within named, do hereby consent to the allowance of the within instrument ... William Stineford his mark". Vol R p105 (from Pen v31p110): Warranty deed, Moses Greenleaf of Williamsburgh sells for $50 to Joseph C Stinniford of Williamsburgh Yeoman, the easterly half part of lot70 acc to the survey and plan of Eben Greenleaf and bounded as follows, viz, beginning at the SE corner of said lot being also the NE corner of Peter Perham's land, thence running west by said Perham's land 120 rods to the westerly half of said lot on the Crosby lot, so called, now in possession of Isaac Stevens, thence north by said Crosby lot 66 2/3 rods top the NE corner therof thence east parallel to the first described line 120 rods to the NE corner of said lot 70, thence south 66 2/3 rods to the first bound - containing 50 acres more or less. Signed in presence of Eben Greenleaf, JP. Same dates, p106 (Pen p 111): Joseph mortgaged said land to Moses Greenleaf for $50 for 10 years. Oct 12, 1833 - Received of Benjamin P Gilman the amount due on the mortgage; entered April 29, 1834. Same dates, p 107 (Pen p 112): Joseph mortgaged to Moses Greenleaf for $200 for 3 years. Vol R p 281: Joseph C Stinniford of Brownville for $20 pd by Benjamin P Gilman of Sebec, Merchant, quitclaimed this land in Williamsburg. Deed description, Crosby/Stevens lot now in possession of Benj P Gilman. Only Joseph Stinneford deeds found. No Stinneford deeds 1838-1847 either. See Deeds for son George H. Joseph married Phebia RUSSELL about 1822. Phebia was born in 1803 in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME and died after 1880 in Dover, Piscataquis, ME. 1880 Dover, Piscataquis, ME Census 108/111: Phebe Cosen, mother, age 73 ME-3, living in household of Oliver Stinneford. Cannot find the Cosen name anywhere in census indexes except for this 1880 mention. There is a Cousens family in MOCA's "Old Cemetery" in Abbott. Cousens is a big family in York County and Wells. Phebe Cousens not found in 1860 census or 1870. Just plain Phebe in Piscataquis Co does not find this Phebe either. No Phebe Russell in Wells VR book. She would have married him probably after 1840 and he would have died before 1880. Dau Lydia's D/C says Phebe was b Stetson and her father b Dover. Litchfield VR book p66: Died May the 22nd day AD 1805 Rachel Russell wife to Daniel Russell the doctor. Also p422. Perhaps this indicates the parents of Phebia. ?? Died May 31 1805 Polly Russell daughter to Daniel Russell & Rachel his wife aged [blank]. Also p422. p88 George G Russel & Eleanor Power both of Bowdoin, md 6 Apr 1809. p164 Hermon Russell & Ann Lowell both of L, marr int 10 May 1823. p171 Harrison Berstow Russell b 8 Apr 1824 to Harrison & Ann. [sic?] p302 Harmon B Russell b 8 Apr 1824 to Harmon & Ann. 1790 census: No Russel in Litchfield (then Smithtown Plt, Lincoln). 1800 Litchfield census pop 1044: none on Ancestry index Russel or Russell or Reusel 1810 Litchfield census pop 1847: none on Ancestry index 1820 Litchfield census pop 2120: none on Ancestry index. Possible Russel cousins in Dover VR: trace them to see if they go back to Litchfield. LOTS of them in index. Children from this marriage were: 6 M i. Bucksport VR has marr of William Staniford & Rachel Cottle in 1821; son William Jr b 22 Mar 1823; William Staniford & Mrs Abigail Rider in 1828; William Staniford & Miss Ruth Page md 1830.
