Verification Report GJ036 April 2021 Former Coalite Works Plot 4 Verification Report Introduction 1.1 Background G&J Geoenvironmental Consultants Ltd (G&J) has been commissioned by Bolsover Land Ltd to carry out the verification of remediation works at the former Coalite Works, located off Buttermilk Lane, Bolsover, Derbyshire. It is proposed to redevelop the site for a commercial use. The entire site is located across the districts of two councils, Bolsover District Council and North East Derbyshire County Council. Plot 4 is situated within a part of the site that is within Bolsover district and this report has been prepared to fulfil Conditions 8, 10(b) and 12 (with respect to Plot 4) of Bolsover District Council consented Planning Application 18/00524/VAR, which varies conditions of the original application (14/00089/OUTEA). Conditions 8, 10(b) and 12 read: 8. Remediation of Plots 4 and 5 shall be carried out in complete accordance with the details approved under application no.s 18/00003/DISCON and 18/00186/DISCON. 10(b). Prior to the construction of any building on Plot 4 or 5; a verification report completed by a suitably qualified and independent assessor (either G&J as approved under 16/00452/DISCON or appropriate alternative assessor subsequently approved in writing by the local planning authority) providing evidence that remediation of those plots meets the site-specific remediation targets approved under application no. 16/00452/DISCON must first be submitted to and approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority. 12. Prior to any building being taken into use on either of Plots 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, a verification report (or verification reports) completed by a suitably qualified and independent assessor (either G&J as approved under 16/00452/DISCON or appropriate alternative assessor subsequently approved in writing by the local planning authority) must first be submitted to and approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority. The submitted verification report (or verification reports) must provide evidence that remediation of the entire development site shown edged red as defined by Drawing No. 18025_SK49 meets the site- specific remediation targets approved under application no. 16/00452/DISCON to meet the requirements of this condition Ground investigations undertaken across the site have identified ground contamination that has been determined as representing potentially significant risks to human health and controlled waters. Why is the water quality in the River Doe Lea so poor? MSc Urban Water Engineering and Management Dissertation, Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University of Sheffield The Doe Lea River has a long history of pollution issues which once earned it the reputation of the most polluted river in Europe. Water quality has succumbed to the pressures of mining heritage, industry, agriculture, urban growth and major highways which dominate the catchment. The catchment has a poor chemical and biological classification status with the Environment Agency and ecological statues varies between poor and bad. Conditions of poor flow are often observed, which intensify water quality issues. In order to determine the reasons for the degradation of surface water quality, a project has been devised to take a snapshot of the water chemistry. Fifty water samples were collected simultaneously across the whole catchment and repeated for each season of the year. Analysis of these samples has developed understanding of pressures and influences that are contributing to water quality degradation. Via a mass balance analysis, it has been possible to locate particular areas of concern, determine sources and quantities of pollution and devise land management options to alleviate pollution stresses.
