This time of year, the end of summer, autumn just round the corner and harvest in full swing, is one of my favourite times. I love to see the fields of wheat or barley harvested and the hay bales dotted all over the fields. The trees just beginning to change colour and he days shortening, the sunsets always seem vivid and better than any other time of year. Yes we have rain and cloud cover but when the sky clears the breathtaking beauty is there to live, see and feel. This time last year I was out walking on clear evening when a cyclist stopped next to me and looked out at the view and said ‘This is God’s country’. John.

Acts for Everyone – what gives us courage?

‘Unschooled, ordinary men’ (Acts 4:13). That is how Peter and John were described by the authorities, having healed the cripple man at the Beautiful Gate. They were disturbed that the apostles were proclaiming that Jesus was alive and healing in His name. Their aim was the silence Peter and John (4:17), but they refused! What gave them the courage to stand for Jesus and how can we learn from this ourselves?

The authorities could not argue against the evidence of a changed life. The crippled man stood before them completely healed for the first time in 40 years (10). A powerful apologetic for the Christian Faith is the testimony of a changed life, for the authorities could say nothing (14). The story of our faith journey may not be as dramatic, but God can use it powerfully.

Peter also points to the authority of Jesus Christ, as the only name under heaven by which we can be saved (12). By raising Jesus the dead, God marked him out as uniquely the Lord and Saviour of mankind. Christianity is not just another variety of religious experience, but a life changing relationship with Jesus, to which we can point others.

Finally, we are told that Peter is filled with the Spirit (8), as on the Day of Pentecost. The Spirit will give us the words and authority to speak and act in the name of Jesus. He enables to communicate the message in a way that people can understand and respond to.

The authorities were alarmed by the growth of the Church. However, they could not stop the apostles from talking about what they had seen and heard (4:20). It is still true today that Christianity will only grow when it talks; stop it talking and you stop it growing!

Local History Corner

Creswell May 1926 Soon after the General Strike came to an end but whilst the miners continued alone with their strike action, the people of Creswell gathered to enjoy the Whitsuntide holiday. Saturday saw an enormous crowd gathered on the cricket field for a gala and sports. Children enjoyed the egg and spoon, skipping, sprint and three legged races. The Licensed Houses and Clubs had a relay race and tug of war. Nothing for women! A tug of war was won by the Station Hotel who beat the Dover Street Club. A men's relay race for the over forties was won by the Station Hotel but they were later disqualified having a man under forty in their team. The prize then went to the Colliery Institute team. Creswell Colliery Silver Band played musical selections and the Black Cat Concert Party entertained throughout the afternoon. There were gymnastic displays by the Boys Brigade and their instructor Mr.M.Herd. An Alpine Railway was popular giving free rides to the children. In the evening a dance in the Drill Hall was to the music of the Boys Brigade Orchestra conducted by Mr.S.Hazelby. Messrs R.Hussey, F.Hancock and H.Heywood were the M.Cs. Then on Whit Monday everyone flocked to the pony races on Mr.Cantrill's meadow in Elmton.(The field on the corner at the bottom of the Green leading to Wood Lane in Creswell).A crowd of 4,000 was estimated to be there. Over 2,000 free tickets were distributed and over £18 collected in coppers. Between 50 and 60 horses( most were ponies brought out of the pit for the break) and their riders, distinguished by their coloured caps and who rode bare back, took part in the races. A young man W.Saul won his race but then fell off his horse and broke his collar bone. Many of the riders gave a large percentage of their winnings to the strike fund for the feeding of the needy children. A week later the Creswell Distress Committee stated that they had provided 500 meals to these children and they were

11 asking if milk could be provided for children of 18 months and under instead of soup. Men carried on the strike for a further 6 months until November before being forced to return by their economic needs. They had to accept lower wages, longer hours and unfortunately were much worse off.
