Many people book baptisms well in advance and dates do get booked up particularly in the Summer months, so please don’t arrange a Christening party before you have checked with us first. 3 This time of year, the end of summer, autumn just round the corner and harvest in full swing, is one of my favourite times. I love to see the fields of wheat or barley harvested and the hay bales dotted all over the fields. The trees just beginning to change colour and he days shortening, the sunsets always seem vivid and better than any other time of year. Yes we have rain and cloud cover but when the sky clears the breathtaking beauty is there to live, see and feel. This time last year I was out walking on clear evening when a cyclist stopped next to me and looked out at the view and said ‘This is God’s country’. John. Photographs by Sam Blagg. 4 Acts for Everyone – what gives us courage? ‘Unschooled, ordinary men’ (Acts 4:13). That is how Peter and John were described by the authorities, having healed the cripple man at the Beautiful Gate. They were disturbed that the apostles were proclaiming that Jesus was alive and healing in His name. Their aim was the silence Peter and John (4:17), but they refused! What gave them the courage to stand for Jesus and how can we learn from this ourselves? The authorities could not argue against the evidence of a changed life. The crippled man stood before them completely healed for the first time in 40 years (10). A powerful apologetic for the Christian Faith is the testimony of a changed life, for the authorities could say nothing (14). The story of our faith journey may not be as dramatic, but God can use it powerfully. Peter also points to the authority of Jesus Christ, as the only name under heaven by which we can be saved (12). By raising Jesus the dead, God marked him out as uniquely the Lord and Saviour of mankind. Christianity is not just another variety of religious experience, but a life changing relationship with Jesus, to which we can point others. Finally, we are told that Peter is filled with the Spirit (8), as on the Day of Pentecost. The Spirit will give us the words and authority to speak and act in the name of Jesus. He enables to communicate the message in a way that people can understand and respond to. The authorities were alarmed by the growth of the Church. However, they could not stop the apostles from talking about what they had seen and heard (4:20). It is still true today that Christianity will only grow when it talks; stop it talking and you stop it growing! This piece of community research coincided with the financial crisis and resulting economic recession which has led to a period of unprecedented ‘austerity’ and a reduction in public welfare provision. The resulting Financial Inclusion Strategy 2009-14 set out 4 key areas for intervention: • Establishing a multi-agency forum to co-ordinate services and service delivery. Initially the Financial Inclusion Forum this became the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) Anti-Poverty Forum in 2012 and VCS Fighting Poverty Forum in 2014 • Increasing and improving financial advice services including welfare rights and benefits advice • Increasing and improving access to financial services including affordable credit and savings and access to affordable warmth • Increasing financial capability and skills Initially funded for 3 years (2009-12) the strategy was delivered by a partnership of groups and continued to be delivered by the VCS Anti-Poverty Forum.

The District of Bolsover Council Election Results 1973-2011 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election.

North East Derbyshire Industrial Archaeology Society NEDIAS Newsletter No. 47 – August 2012 Price: £1.00 (Free to Members) SamuelSamuel LeesLees IronworksIronworks atat ParkPark BridgeBridge CliffCliff LeaLea ast month we went to see the site of Samuel Lees ironworks, just north of Ashton-under-Lyne at Park Bridge, a site that was started by Samuel Lees in the 1780s, and which was developed over L many generations of the same family. The ironworks is probably Lancashire’s longest surviving example of an industrial community based on engineering. From the 17th century the Medlock valley had been extensively mined for coal, and this was where Lees built his first water powered mill in 1789. The site is now a country park, with remains of the forges, gas works, pumping house, bar rolling mill as well as the Lees family houses and cotton mill. The family built the Park bridge village for their workers, including shops, terraces, institute, school and church. The Park Bridge works were developed from an earlier water corn mill, but the availability of coal nearby and the demand for textile machinery in the surrounding towns made Park Bridge well situated. In addition to the original forges, new "bright shops,” where steel was polished, and rolling mills were built in Rocher Vale to the east and a later building below the viaduct became a cotton spinning mill. A 1780s Newcomen steam engine which had been installed to pump water from 200 foot pit, at an area now called Fairbottom Bobs is no longer there; apparently it was dismantled in 1929
