Jedediah and His Family
AMBER VALLEY JEDEDIAH STRUTT Jedediah and his family Jedediah Strutt is the man who connected all the sites in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. His Matlock Bath hosiery business and early silk mill were in Derby, and Cromford Jedediah was the leading partner in the development of Cromford Mill. The Belper and Milford Mills were built by Jedediah and his eldest son and his eldest Cromford Canal daughter married into the Evans family at Darley DERWENT VALLEY Whatstandwell Abbey. VISITOR CENTRE Jedediah remained a plain-living man despite his accumulated wealth, adhering to his Unitarian beliefs. He had three sons and two daughters by his wife, Ambergate Jedediah Strutt Elizabeth who died in 1774. Jedediah took a great A6 interest in his children’s education and development. He married Anne Daniels in 1781 and built a plain mansion as their home, Milford House. “Here rest in peace J. On 26 July 1985 we wrote to Staffordshire County Council announcing our intention to undertake a review of the County under Section 48(1) of the Local Government Act 1972. Copies of our letter were sent to all the principal local authorities and parishes in Staffordshire, and in the adjoining counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, West Midlands, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Hereford and Worcester and Leicestershire; to the National and County Associations of Local Councils; to the Members of Parliament with constituency interests and to the headquarters of the main political parties. In addition copies were sent to those government departments with an interest; regional health authorities; public utilities in the area; the English Tourist Board; the editors of the Municipal Journal and Local Government Chronicle; and to local television and radio stations serving the area. 2. The County Councils were requested to co-operate as necessary with each other, and with the District Councils concerned, to assist us in publicising the start of the review, by inserting a notice for two successive weeks in local newspapers so as to give a wide coverage in the areas concerned. -

Middlewich Before the Romans
MIDDLEWICH BEFORE THE ROMANS During the last few Centuries BC, the Middlewich area was within the northern territories of the Cornovii. The Cornovii were a Celtic tribe and their territories were extensive: they included Cheshire and Shropshire, the easternmost fringes of Flintshire and Denbighshire and parts of Staffordshire and Worcestershire. They were surrounded by the territories of other similar tribal peoples: to the North was the great tribal federation of the Brigantes, the Deceangli in North Wales, the Ordovices in Gwynedd, the Corieltauvi in Warwickshire and Leicestershire and the Dobunni to the South. We think of them as a single tribe but it is probable that they were under the control of a paramount Chieftain, who may have resided in or near the great hill‐fort of the Wrekin, near Shrewsbury. The minor Clans would have been dominated by a number of minor Chieftains in a loosely‐knit federation. There is evidence for Late Iron Age, pre‐Roman, occupation at Middlewich. This consists of traces of round‐ houses in the King Street area, occasional finds of such things as sword scabbard‐fittings, earthenware salt‐ containers and coins. Taken together with the paleo‐environmental data, which hint strongly at forest‐clearance and agriculture, it is possible to use this evidence to create a picture of Middlewich in the last hundred years or so before the Romans arrived. We may surmise that two things gave the locality importance; the salt brine‐springs and the crossing‐points on the Dane and Croco rivers. The brine was exploited in the general area of King Street, and some of this important commodity was traded far a‐field. -

The Concept of Identity in the East Midlands of England NATALIE BRABER Investigating feelings of identity in East Midlands adolescents Introduction When considering dialectal variation in the UK, linguists have frequently considered the North/South divide and the linguistic markers separating the two regions (see for example Trudgill, 1999; Wells, 1986). But it has been noted that this is not a straightforward division (e.g. Beal, 2008; Goodey, Gold, Duffett & Spencer, 1971; Montgomery, 2007; Wales, 2002). There are clear stereotypes for the North and South – but how do areas like the East Midlands fit into the picture? The boundaries between North and South are defined in different ways. Beal’s linguistic North does not include the East Midlands (Beal, 2008: 124- 5), neither does Wales’ (2002: 48). Trudgill states that in traditional dialectology the East Midlands area falls under ‘Central’ dialects, which come under the ‘Southern’ branch, but in modern dialectology it falls in the ‘North’. Hughes, Trudgill and Watt (2005: 70) contains a map which has the East Midlands in the North. Linguistically, the question has been raised whether there is a clear North/South boundary (see for example Upton (2012) where it is proposed that it is a transition zone). This paper revisits this question from the point of view of young people living in the East Midlands, to examine their sense of identity and whether this cultural divide is salient to them. The East Midlands is a problematic area in its definition geographically, and people may have difficulty in relating this to their own sense of identity. -

Church Broughton Parish, Derbyshire: An oral history, 1900-1940 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Janet Arthur De Montfort University June 2019 Abstract This study is an oral history of a Derbyshire dairying parish during the first forty years of the twentieth century. The aim was to discover the nature and cohesion of society in a parish with no resident lord of the manor, the effects on the parish of changes in agricultural practice and the impact of government interventions on the lives of individuals. The lives of residents were affected by the history and layout of the parish, based on the geography and previous ownership. Having no resident lord of the manor generated a social structure with three layers: firstly, seven key people, outsiders who did not own land, secondly, networks of small landowners and artisans, who had lived there for generations, finally, labourers, many also families of long standing. Religion was important in supporting this social structure. Being an ‘open’ parish had enabled a chapel to be built and the provision of a school, though not all children attended this school. Through widespread ownership, there was a freedom to live and work without being beholden to neighbouring estates, as alternative employment could be found elsewhere for any surplus workers. Mechanisation improved farming practice, but, though government intervention during the First World War helped, the downturn afterwards and competition between farmers meant dairying was precarious, until the foundation of the Milk Marketing Board in 1933 to control production and price. The sale of the Duke of Devonshire’s farms in 1918 to the occupiers and the County Council removed the prestige that his tenants had enjoyed. -

The overall aim is to use pollen analysis to resolve the relative influence of climate and anthropogenic landscape disturbance on the cessation of tufa production at Lathkill Dale and Monsal Dale in the White Peak region of the Peak District using past vegetation cover as a proxy. Modern White Peak pollen – vegetation relationships are examined to aid semi- quantitative interpretation of sub-fossil pollen assemblages. Moss-polsters and vegetation surveys incorporating novel methodologies are used to produce new Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates (RPPE) for 6 tree taxa, and new association indices for 16 herb taxa. RPPE’s of Alnus, Fraxinus and Pinus were similar to those produced at other European sites; Betula values displaying similarity with other UK sites only. RPPE’s for Fagus and Corylus were significantly lower than at other European sites. Pollen taphonomy in woodland floor mosses in Derbyshire and East Yorkshire is investigated. -

Of particular interest was the “Granby” going three times a week from the Black Boy through Bingham to Grantham; the “Imperial” daily to Hull from the Lion via Bingham, Newark and Lincoln; and the “Accommodation” to Lincoln from the Black’s Head via Bingham and Newark. If not exactly a honeypot for Saturday night raves, Bingham did have some social attractions for the surrounding villages. There were three fairs during the year - the Tuesday and Wednesday before the 13th February, for horses; Thursday in Whitsun Week a holiday; and November 8th and 9th for pigs. There was a stallion show on Easter Thursday, and a large statute fair for hiring Local History servants generally the last Thursday in October. The Vale of Belvoir was still very rural. The Post Office was in Church Street. The mail gig for Newark, with the letters for York, left Digest Nottingham at 5.00 in the morning, reached Bingham at half past six, arriving in Newark at 8.00.
