Acclaimed for the immedi- acy, sensitivity and depth of his interpretations, Mr. Babayan’s performances reveal an emotional intensity and bold energy, equipping him to explore stylistically diverse repertoire. Known for innovative programming, he often includes contemporary works of composers such as Lutosławski, Ligeti and Pärt; extending the boundaries of the mainstream repertoire for which he’s acclaimed - excelling in Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann, and such Russian giants as Rach- maninov, Scriabin and Prokofiev. A student of such legendary teachers and musicians as Gornostayeva, Naumov, Pletnev and Vlasenko at the Moscow Conservatory, he was not permitted to leave the country to compete and study in the West. Following the collapse of the Soviet system, he was the first pianist from the former USSR able to compete without government sponsorship. Immediately following his first trip abroad, Mr. Babayan won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions including the 1990 Robert Casadesus Inter- national Piano Competition (now the Cleveland International Piano Competition), 1990 Palm Beach International Piano Competition, 1991 Hamamatsu Piano Competition and the 1992 Scottish International Pi- ano Competition. He is also a Laureate of the Esther Honens (Calgary, Canada), Busoni and Queen Elisabeth International Piano Competi- tions. Mr. Babayan has had major engagements and concert tours throughout Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, South America, China and the U.S. His New York recitals at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall, performances with The Cleveland Orchestra, Bal- timore and Detroit Symphony Orchestras have all been met with tre- mendous critical acclaim, as have his many subsequent recital and con- certo performances throughout major cities in the U.S. His concert schedule has included performances and broadcasts throughout major European cities and extensive tours of Japan. He has appeared in recital in such venues as Salle Gaveau (Paris), Wigmore Hall (London), Car- negie Hall (New York), Philharmonic Hall (Warsaw), Severance Hall (Cleveland), Bolshoy Zal of the Moscow Conservatory (Moscow), Mariinsky Theatre (St. Petersburg), Herkulessaal (Munich), Liederhalle (Stuttgart), Meistersingerhalle (Nürnberg), Konzerthaus (Berlin), Brahmsallee (Karlsruhe), Beethovenhalle (Bonn) and many others. Mr. Babayan has appeared at major music festivals in France, Germany, the UK, Poland, Spain, China and the U.S. His concerts have been broad- cast by WQXR, WCLV, Radio France, Polish Radio and Televi-sion, BBC-TV and NHK Satellite Television. He has made several highly praised recordings for the EMC, Connoisseur Society and Pro Piano labels. A deep interest in and love for Bach’s music recently led him to study with Helmuth Rilling. Mr. Babayan has also studied conducting in order to deepen his understanding of the orchestra. In this role, he has conducted music of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schnittke, Pärt, Vasks, Schedrin and Prokofiev. Mr. Babayan was invited by Valery Gergiev to perform at the international Stars of the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg with the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre. The perform- ance was received with great enthusiasm and highly acclaimed in the Russian press. Mr. Babayan has appeared recently at the Prague Spring Festival and with the great Valery Gergiev in St. Petersburg and London (London Symphony Orchestra). Last October, his Belfast performance of Rachmaninov’s 3rd Concerto with the Ulster Orchestra was broadcast live by the BBC. In December 2010, at Gergiev’s invita- tion, he performed Bach’s Goldberg Variations in St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre. He’s just returned from recitals in Chicago and South Korea. This April Mr. Babayan will perform the Brahms 2nd Concerto in Bratislava and Caracas, Venezuela. Wish you could enjoy tonight’s concert again? You can! Visit www.instantencore.com/cim. Duration: approx. 35 minutes. Concertmaster: Mirosla Paloić One of the world’s most significant events in musical circles in 2016 was the rediscovery of Igor Stravinsky’s (1882–1971) lost composition, which went missing at the time when the composer was at the beginning of his career. Funeral Song was written in 1908 as a memorial tribute to the death of composer Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov, Igor Stravinsky’s teacher and close friend. The piece was performed the first time in the following year, 1909, and then it was lost during the Russian Revolution. In the ensuing years, Stravinsky talked highly about this piece, referring to it as the precursor to his early masterpieces – the ballets The Firebird and The Rite of Spring, confident that it had to still exist somewhere in Saint Petersburg’s archives. The search for the long-lost score lasted longer than a century, before it was fortuitously discovered in the archives of Saint Petersburg Conservatory.

Orchestras became larger, new harmonies and harmonic relationships became available, and the scale on which composers executed their work grew significantly. It is not surprising, then, that this period also saw the emergence of music for piano duo. True, Mozart had written several pieces for two pianos, notably his fine Sonata in D Major of 1781, but these proved isolated and exceptional works. Even Beethoven, Mozart’s heir in many respects, left nothing for piano duo among his many keyboard compositions.

  • Pianist Daniil Trifonov — This Generation's Sensation — Brings His Mentor, Sergei Babayan, to Boston
The ARTery Pianist Daniil Trifonov — This Generation's Sensation — Brings His Mentor, Sergei Babayan, To Boston February 26, 2018 By Keith Powers DaniilDaniil TrifonovTrifonov’s February calendar says it all. Daniil Trifonov Fourteen concerts, with eight different programs. Two major concertos, five solo recitals, five duo piano concerts. Two concerts accompanying a singer. One trip to Europe. One trip back from Europe. A brief stop to pick up a Grammy. Somewhere in there he celebrates his recent marriage, to pianist Judith Ramirez. In between, he puts the finishing touches — “all that’s lef is the orchestration now,” he says — to his latest composition, destined to be a double chamber concerto, for himself and violinist Gidon Kremer. That work, along with his E-flat piano concerto, which he debuted with 2014 in Cleveland, adds composing achievements to his chock-a-block musical resumé. Here is a piece from his Grammy-winning Liszt recording, "Transcendental": There’s a clever saying: If you want something done, ask a busy person. That certainly seems a valid appraisal of Daniil Trifonov. The 26-year-old Russian-born pianist has stormed into the classical music spotlight. He’s no stranger to Boston, with multiple appearances for the Celebrity Series, and multiple appearances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well, including two breathtaking — and completely different — performances at Tanglewood this past summer. He’s back in Boston on Saturday, March 3, playing the final date in a Europe-to- America tour with his mentor, SergeiSergei BabayanBabayan. It’s a two-piano Celebrity Series recital at Jordan Hall, and if you don’t have a ticket in your pocket as you read Sergei Babayan this, you should go right now and try to get one.
