THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 2020 HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL FROM UNKNOWN TO CHAMPION, STORM THE COURT READIES FOR 3YO ENCORE AT SPRINGLAND by Joe Bianca In the fall of 2016, trainer Peter Eurton saddled a big longshot in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita who rode a game upset to an improbable divisional championship. Three years later, he did the same thing, this time with an unheralded colt in the Juvenile, whose shocking and resolute victory propelled him to an unforeseeable Eclipse Award of his own. Eurton hopes the comparisons end there, however, as his Storm the Court (Court Vision) prepares to get his sophomore season underway while adding the weight of expectation next Sunday in the GII San Vicente S. It was Champagne Room--campaigned in part by Ryan Exline and Justin Border=s Exline-Border Racing just like Storm the Court--who toppled the Juvenile Fillies at 33-1 in 2016 to earn her statuette. But the bay filly finished a well-beaten third in her 3-year-old debut and was shelved for over seven months before Shotski (inside) winning the Remsen | Sarah Andrew winning just one of her final three starts that fall. • HOW WE GOT HERE I Imagine If You Are Reading This, We Share Something in Common--The Love of Horses and Horse Racing
FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2019 TAKING STOCK: OP/ED: NEVER LET A GOOD CRISIS GO TO WASTE by Boyd Browning HOW WE GOT HERE I imagine if you are reading this, we share something in common--the love of horses and horse racing. Like me, you may even make your living and provide for family by working in this industry. When I get the TDN Alerts at night that another important governing body is calling for an end to racing or to shut down the track, I feel sick to my stomach and can't sleep. And then I get up in the morning and read/listen to the finger pointing and infighting within the industry. The "blame game" must stop immediately and we can either work together to make smart decisions that reflect the world we live in and survive, or we can continue to fight with one another about who's right and who's wrong. We must recognize and embrace meaningful change to protect and care for the horse. WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2019 COUNTRY HOUSE OUT OF HE’S BRED EXACTLY ONE HORSE, AND SHE WON THE KENTUCKY OAKS PREAKNESS WITH FEVER by Bill Finley Though he works for Taylor Made, Val Henson is not a name widely known in horse racing. That’s because his job at the farm is Director of Maintenance and Special Projects, which means handling issues like overseeing fence repair and barn maintenance. Nothing he does involves working with the horses. But being around horse people led Henson to decide to dabble in racing, albeit on a small scale. He and a partner, Mark Hartig, started by involving themselves in a pinhooking venture. They made some money off of that, and rolled the dice again when deciding to buy a share in the stallion Alternation. He needed a mare, so he bought an unraced 3-year-old named Havisham (Bernardini) for $5,000 at the 2015 Keeneland January Sale and bred her to Alternation.
