Since breaking his maiden at seven furlongs by three- quarters of a length over next-out winner Ma- haamel in April at Bel- mont Park, First Captain scored once more against first condition allowance runners five weeks later over Big Sandy going a one-turn mile. Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey entered First Captain for his first Shug McGaughey/COGLIANESE PHOTO stakes test last out in the Grade 3 Dwyer on July 5 at Belmont Park, and he handled the class boost with flying colors, capturing the one-turn mile by a length- and-three-quarters. “He is doing really well up here,” McGaughey said. “He lost his whole 2-year-old year so he’s still behind, but he’s trying to catch up. I think that his last race was good and he certainly likes this track here. I’m looking forward to it. We have been taking it one step at a time.” First Captain is owned by West Point , Siena Farm, Woodford Racing and celebrity culinary artist Bobby Flay, the latter of whom also bred the chestnut colt. Wire to Wire July 29, 2021 Back to Top Page 9 Violenza, Eons Win Andy Guest and Buckland Stakes Monday

BY COLONIAL DOWNS PRESS OFFICE______NEW KENT, VA—A neck and a head were the difference makers at Colonial Downs Monday in the Andy Guest and Buckland Stakes, while Mother Nature was the difference maker in the Da Hoss Stakes, which was cancelled mid-card due to thunderstorms in the area. Both stakes were contested over the Turf Course which was labeled good after the rain departed. Seven of the track’s nine races scheduled were run. The fourth and fifth fell victim to the storms which caused an hour-plus delay. Randall Bloch, Six Column Stables LLC, John Seiler, David Hall & David Kirk’s Violenza edged Mucha Mezquina on the outside after a thrilling finish that saw the pair trailing by nine lengths halfway through the five-and-a-half-furlong $100,000 Andy Guest Stakes. Both made moves together exiting the turn and at the top of stretch, moved into striking position. Violenza ended up prevailing by a neck ahead of Mucha Mezquina in second in a blanket finish where the top five finished within a length-and-a-half lengths of each other. Beantown Baby was third followed by Dannyhill, Hydra, Moanas, Mudslide Wicked, Mastering Bela and Lovielee. The final time on the good turf was 1:02.74 and Violenza paid $9 to win. Regular jockey Chris Landeros came in from Kentucky to ride Ian Wilkes’ winning 4-year-old Violence filly. BY CHRIS LOMON, WOODBINE COMMUNICATIONS ______TORONTO—The LongRun Graduate Vir- tual Race to the Plate is going to great lengths to make a difference for nearly 40 thoroughbreds. As Vicki Pappas sees it, the fundraising event is a win-win for everyone, horse and human. A total of 39 graduates of LongRun, one of the first adoption and placement pro- grams for thoroughbred racehorses in On- tario, are part of Race to the Plate, an initiative that invites people to sponsor a horse to a maximum of $25 per person, with each $5 donation providing one length for the horse as part of a contest that culminates with a winner being announced on Aug. 22, Queen’s Plate day at . “One of our TAA [Thoroughbred After- care Alliance] partners, Maryland Horse Rescue, they did an event like this around the Preakness,” Pappas, LongRun’s Chair and one of its founding members, said. “We thought it was a great idea. We’re not able to have a big gala like we usually do to fundraise, so this was this alternative. And it seems to be working out extremely well.” Photos and short bios of the horses are featured on the LongRun website at longrunretirement.com/race-2021.
