Najib's Fork-Tongue Shows Again: Umno Talks of Rejuvenation Yet Oldies Get Plum Jobs at Expense of New Blood
NAJIB'S FORK-TONGUE SHOWS AGAIN: UMNO TALKS OF REJUVENATION YET OLDIES GET PLUM JOBS AT EXPENSE OF NEW BLOOD 11 February 2016 - Malaysia Chronicle The recent appointments of Tan Sri Annuar Musa, 59, as Umno information chief, and Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, 65, as Kedah menteri besar, have raised doubts whether one of the oldest parties in the country is truly committed to rejuvenating itself. The two stalwarts are taking over the duties of younger colleagues, Datuk Ahmad Maslan, 49, and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, 51, respectively. Umno’s decision to replace both Ahmad and Mukhriz with older leaders indicates that internal politics trumps the changes it must make to stay relevant among the younger generation. In a party where the Youth chief himself is 40 and sporting a greying beard, Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has time and again stressed the need to rejuvenate itself and attract the young. “Umno and Najib specifically have been saying about it (rejuvenation) for quite some time but they lack the political will to do so,” said Professor Dr Arnold Puyok, a political science lecturer from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. “I don’t think Najib has totally abandoned the idea of ‘peremajaan Umno’ (rejuvenation). He is just being cautious as doing so will put him in a collision course with the old guards.” In fact, as far back as 2014, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said older Umno leaders were unhappy with Najib’s call for rejuvenation as they believed it would pit them against their younger counterparts. He said the “noble proposal” that would help Umno win elections could be a “ticking time- bomb” instead. -

'90pc in Felda support PM' New Straits Times 09 May 2013 KUALA LUMPUR: There is immense support from Felda communities nationwide as almost 90 per cent were confident of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's administration. Felda Group chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad said in the wake of countless allegations thrown against the new government, Felda would always support Najib. "We hope the PM can continue to steer the country as he has proven to be capable of ensuring the welfare of Felda and the country," he said at Balai Felda. The newly elected Jempol parliamentarian said tense and chaotic situations were common after an election or by-election, but people needed to move forward. "Now, the new government will carry out its promises under the akujanji (pledge) and it will be delivered within the next five years." Isa said Malaysians should rise above allegations and racial sentiments concerning electoral fraud as it was merely a ploy by the opposition to create confusion. "Every election, the opposition will create confusion among the public and condemn the Election Commission" Commenting on the declining support of the Chinese towards Barisan Nasional, Isa said the matter ought to be further analysed. "During the 1999 elections, the Chinese support was good, but in the past two elections, their support has decreased. The government must seek out reasons behind this declining support." Isa said there was a possibility that the Chinese believed in the promises made by the opposition. On MCA's stand not to take up any government positions, he said the party should not give up. -

Countries at the Crossroads 2012: Malaysia
COUNTRIES AT THE CROSSROADS Countries at the Crossroads 2012: Malaysia Introduction Malaysia has over 28 million people, of whom approximately 63 percent are ethnic Malay, 25 percent Chinese, 7 percent Indian, and 4 percent Ibans and Kadazan-Dusun.1 Much of this diversity was created through the British formation of an extractive colonial economy, with the “indigenous” Malay community ordered into small holdings and rice cultivation, while the “non-Malays” were recruited from China and India into tin mining and plantation agriculture. Further, in preparing the territory for independence in 1957, the British fashioned a polity that was formally democratic, but would soon be encrusted by authoritarian controls. Throughout the 1960s, greater urbanization brought many Malays to the cities, where they encountered the comparative prosperity of the non-Malays. They perceived the multiethnic coalition that ruled the country, anchored by the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), but including the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) and the Malayan Indian Congress (MIC), as doing little to enhance their living standards. At the same time, many non-Malays grew alienated by the discrimination they faced in accessing public sector resources. Thus, as voters in both communities swung to opposition parties in an election held in May 1969, the UMNO-led coalition, known as the Alliance, was gravely weakened. Shortly afterward, Malays and Chinese clashed in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, sparking ethnic rioting known as the May 13th incident. Two years of emergency rule followed during which parliament was closed. As the price for reopening parliament in 1971, UMNO imposed new curbs on civil liberties, thereby banning any questioning of the Malay “special rights” that are enshrined in constitution’s Article 153. -

'So you think this is your father's country?' MalaysiaKini.com May 18, 2013 By Ahmad Fadli KC PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has described the statement urging those unhappy with the May 5 general election results to leave the country as an insult to Malaysians. seremban black rally 180513 01"So you think this is your father's country? This is an insult to the people," said Anwar during his speech at the Negri Sembilan leg of the Black 505 rally in Seremban last night, which was attended by 30,000 Pakatan Rakyat supporters. He was commenting on the statement made by newly sworn-in Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in an opinion piece published by Utusan Malaysia on Thursday. Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had yesterday lashed out at Zahid's statement, saying the new home minister's statement was preposterous. However, newly-minted Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has attempted to soothe public outrage over the statement. He said the statement was Zahid's personal opinion and not that of the cabinet. Ahmad's 'sodomise' article slammed Asserting that home minister's statement was "stupid", Anwar also slammed another opinion piece by Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan, which appeared in the same paper a day after Zahid's article was published. black 505 rally seremban crowdAccording to Anwar, Ahmad's use of the word 'sodomise' in his article to dismiss the number of popular votes garnered by Pakatan, which was higher than BN, was "obscene". PAS Poll of No Real Consequence (NST 18/04/2002)
18/04/2002 PAS poll of no real consequence Shamsul Akmar THE editors of Harakah, PAS' official newsletter, must be enjoying themselves. It is quite rare for them to get the attention of those from Umno, the nemesis of the party they represent. After two weeks of getting the attention for their Internet polls on who among five top Umno leaders is most trusted to succeed Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister, Harakah's online edition launched another poll. This time around, it is a poll to determine who among the Barisan Nasional (BN) Menteris Besar and Chief Ministers is the one that the readers respect most. The list starts with Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Penang's Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali (Perak), Datuk Seri Syed Abdul Razak Syed Zain (Kedah), Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo (Selangor), Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad (Negri Sembilan), Datuk Wira Mohd Ali Rustam (Malacca), Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob (Pahang), Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman (Johor), Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud (Sarawak) and Datuk Dr Chong Kah Kiat (Sabah). Excluded from the poll are PAS Menteris Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat (Kelantan) and Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (Terengganu). According to Harakah editor Zulkifli Sulong, the exclusion of Nik Aziz and Hadi from the poll was intentional. It would not have been fair to include them as the respondents are mostly PAS members or at least their sympathisers. Chances are the PAS as Menteris Besar will have an overwhelming lead in the polls, he added. -
Isa: Isu Waad Sudah Selesai (BH 21/12/1999)
21/12/1999 Isa: Isu Waad sudah selesai SEREMBAN, Isnin - Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad menganggap kontroversi pelantikan Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (Adun) Gemencheh, Datuk Waad Mansor sebagai ahli Exco sudah selesai dan tidak perlu diperbesarkan lagi. "Apa lagi hendak cakap. -

Do Not Worry About Leaders Who Have Left, Says Najib Thestaronline February 15, 2013 by MAZWIN NIK ANIS and RUBEN SARIO
Do not worry about leaders who have left, says Najib TheStarOnline February 15, 2013 By MAZWIN NIK ANIS and RUBEN SARIO KOTA KINABALU: Leaders will come and go but the party that has served them well all these years will stay and continue with its business of running the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. He carried his message into the hot-beds of Beaufort and Tuaran, where the incumbent MPs have left the Barisan to become Opposition-friendly. Beaufort MP Datuk Lajim Ukin, an ex-Umno supreme council member and former Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister, and Tuaran MP Datuk Wilfred Bumburing left the ruling coalition last year. They have since formed non-governmental organisations aligned to the Opposition and are likely to contest as PKR candidates in the general election. “The people must not worry about losing their leaders. This is a norm in politics,” Najib told a gathering in Beaufort yesterday. “What is important is for Malaysians to rally around the party that has served them and the nation well over all these years,” he said, urging the people to continue giving the mandate to Barisan Nasional. Najib, who is Barisan chief and Umno president, said the party's struggle was more important than that of individuals. “Even I cannot say I am important. Likewise, other leaders, too,” he said, pointing out that despite party founder Datuk Onn Jaafar resigning from the party in its early years, Umno continued to grow stronger. “A leader leaving is not a big deal. What is important is for the people to continue giving the mandate to Barisan to administer this nation well,” he said.
