Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -

Castillo August, 2017 ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the role of the Catholic Church in defining racial categories and construction of the social order during and after the Spanish conquest of Mexico, then New Spain. The Catholic Church, at both the institutional and local levels, was vital to Spanish colonization and exercised power equal to the colonial state within the Americas. Therefore, its interests, specifically in connection to internal and external “threats,” effected New Spain society considerably. The growth of Protestantism, the Crown’s attempts to suppress Church influence in the colonies, and the power struggle between the secular and regular orders put the Spanish Catholic Church on the defensive. Its traditional roles and influence in Spanish society not only needed protecting, but reinforcing. As per tradition, the Church acted as cultural center once established in New Spain. However, the complex demographic challenged traditional parameters of social inclusion and exclusion which caused clergymen to revisit and refine conceptions of race and gender. -
A Band Together. but Who Knew We'd Find As Durable an Application Of
o R M D EVERY MUSICIAN KNOWS IT’s THE RHYTHM SECTION THAT HOLDS a band together. But who knew we’d find as durable an application of that maxim as the one exemplified by the history of Fleetwood Mac? & Over the last thirty years, Fleetwood Mac has comprised fifteen musicians shuffled through six major lineups, resulting in endless tin- kerings with tone and genre. Yet the two members to survive it all rarely write tunes and never front the recordings. They’re the beat- keepers - drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Me Vie. The fact that a rhythm section could sustain a band through thirty years seems all the more amazing considering the traumatic histories of the band’s shifting array o f stage-front stars. Together, their personal lives have given rock one of its most elaborate and juicy plotlines. (L Religious conversions, spells o f madness, “incestuous” liaisons within the band, drug freak-outs, alleged brainwashings, imperson- Mick ^ stevie ations, everything short of murder have spun Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Fleetwood Mac’s legacy into a story worthy of Buckingham (from left) Scheherazade. & Musically the band has endured just as many twists, moving from blues to rockabilly to laid-back California folk rock - finally to bloom into purveyors of some of the most popular and endur- ing music of the Seventies. (L It all began humbly enough. In 1967, the B Y J I M FÄRBER The band in '69: Peter original foursome convened as arch Fame entrant, Santana). If that wasn’t enough, Rose also saw the Green, Fleetwood, Jeremy devotees of the blues, arriving in the band adding nineteen-year-old Danny Kirwan (who’d played in Spencer, Danny Kirwan, second wave of U.K. -

UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE a Study of Antichrist
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE A Study of Antichrist Typology in Six Biblical Dramas of 17th Century Spain A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish by Jason Allen Wells December 2014 Dissertation Committee: Dr. James Parr, Chairperson Dr. David Herzberger Dr. Benjamin Liu Copyright Jason Allen Wells 2014 The Dissertation of Jason Allen Wells is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION A Study of Antichrist Typology in Six Biblical Dramas of 17th Century Spain by Jason Allen Wells Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in Spanish University of California, Riverside, December 2014 Dr. James Parr, Chairperson This dissertation examines Antichrist types manifested in the primary antagonists of six biblical dramas of seventeenth century Spanish theater. After researching the topic of biblical typology in the works of theologians Sir Robert Anderson, G.H. Pember, Arthur W. Pink, and Peter S. Ruckman, who propose various personages of both the Old and New Testaments that adumbrate the Antichrist, I devise a reduced list based on extant plays of the Spanish Golden Age whose main characters match the scriptural counterparts of my register. These characters are Cain, Absalom, Haman, Herod the Great, Judas Iscariot, and the Antichrist himself. I consult the Bible to provide the reader with pertinent background information about these foreshadowings of the Son of Perdition and then I compare and contrast these characteristics with those provided by the playwrights in their respective works. By making these comparisons and contrasts the reader is able to observe the poets’ embellishments of the source material, artistic contributions that in many instances probably satisfy the reader’s desire for details not found in the biblical iv narratives. -

Radio-friendly hits Cedille like “Evil Ways”, “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va” defined the rhythmic ferocity and accessibility of Carlos Santana. Instrumental jams like “Jingo”, Soul Sacrifice” and “Samba Pa Ti” expanded their musical style and development. One observer referred to Santana as a rock version of Dizzy Gillespie’s Latin-oriented bands and ensembles. In the early 70’s jazz, blues and rock tenuously combined to form a genre named Fusion. Each artist in this discipline distilled a unique Site Search instrumental approach. These bands included Weather Report, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever. All three groups had Search working ties to Miles Davis who inspired Fusion and generated more respect for this trend. Santana had many influences (and among them Davis). He was ready for an evolved vision for the band and for himself. -
